4 • www.goviks.com 2013 Women’s Soccer Media Guide 2013 Season Preview Season Preview: Youth Movement for Vikings in 2013

Youth will rule for the Vikings in 2013, as 18 of the team’s 25 players will be underclassmen. That youth will have big shoes to fill, too, as the team looks to replace one of the most accom- plished senior classes to play for the school. Last season’s senior class won its third Big Sky Confer- ence title in four years last fall, and accounted for the team’s top four scorers on last year’s team as well. This season, the Vikings will have to replace seniors Amanda Howie, Amanda Dutra and Me- gan Martin, as well as sophomore Daniela Solis, opening up the forward and midfield positions for younger starters. The Viks will also attempt to replace the void left by senior goalkeeper Lainey Hulsizer, who had the best statistical season of her career last fall. The Vikings will be fortunate to return two ex- perienced players up front in junior forward Kayla Henningsen and sophomore Cori Bianchini. Hen- ningsen earned All-Big Sky honorable mention honors last fall, and her and Bianchini represent the team’s top two returning scorers from last sea- son as well. Bianchini led all returners with seven Brenner Steve points last season (3g, 1a), while Henningsen ranked close behind with five (2g, 1a). Sophomore Sophomore defender Torie Morris stands as one of 18 underclassmen on the 2013 roster. Despite her youth, Tamia Hasan will also be among the returners up Morris will be counted on to lead the Vikings this season, after she was named to the All-Big Sky second team front, and should affect games in 2013 with her following the team’s title-winning 2012 season. speed on the outside. 2013 Women’s Soccer Media Guide www.goviks.com • 7 Portland State University Green. It’s more than our school color. At Portland State we do more than just study sustainability. We en- gage directly with the community around us to make sustainability real. Our goal is to harness the strengths of our singular urban university - our new ideas, our innovative partnerships, our academic rigor - toward solv- ing the environmental, social, and economic problems of our time. In September 2008, Portland State University received the biggest donation in its history: $25 million from the James F. and Maron L. Miller Foundation for research and projects focused on sustainability.

About sustainability If you’re encountering the concept of sustainability for the first time, you may be asking yourself what all the buzz is about. When pressed to provide a definition, most sustainability professionals offer some varia- tion on the following definition: Sustainability means meeting the eco- nomic, social, and environmental needs of the present without compro- mising the similar needs of future generations. Urban and Public Affairs Courtyard Sustainability is a process. By thinking about sustainability as a con- tinuum rather than an endpoint, we as a University are better positioned to identify our successes while simultaneously focusing on future goals. Portland State aims to be a living laboratory of sustainability, with our efforts at research and education fully integrated with the community around us.

Oregonians love the water. Whether it be rivers, lakes, the ocean, the frozen kind, or even falling from the sky - much of Oregon’s beauty lies in its water. Water is also what makes the Willamette Valley a lush and fertile region, making it one of the most beautiful places in the country.

The Willamette River (top) meanders through downtown Portland and the center of the Willamette Valley. The rugged Oregon coastline (bottom) is inspiring in its beauty, and located just 78 miles west of Portland. Unfortunately the Vikings’ quest for the program’s first Big Sky tourna- ment championship and the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament was halted by Montana in the semifinal round, but PSU recorded its third-best record in program history with a 9-8-2 overall mark and 6-2-1 conference record. Portland State entered 2012 with rea- son for optimism, returning a talented se- nior class, along with the infusion of young talent that was primed to make an impact early on. Portland State entered the tournament ready to face defending Big Sky champion, Montana. The Viks had defeated the Grizzlies 2-0 earlier in the year. PSU was also faced with the same scenario that the 2002 women’s soccer team had when it advanced to the Big Sky championship, match- ing up against Montana in a tournament hosted in Pocatello, Idaho. Unfortunately for PSU history did not repeat itself as the Grizzlies came out with fire. Erin Craig made it 1-0 in the fifth minute stunning PSU. Mary Makris made it 2-0 in the 13th minute as Portland State faced an early 2-0 deficit. The Griz- zlies controlled the midfield, winning contested balls regularly but Solis gave the Vikings hope to- wards the end of the first stanza, taking a Howie pass and lofting a shot over the Montana goal- keeper. With that marker, the Viks entered half- time with a 2-1 deficit and with newfound hope. While you could have made the argument that the Viks had the momentum as the second half began, Montana didn’t let up. Mackenzie Akins gave the Grizzlies its two-goal advantage back early in the second frame. Howie, who en- tered the match on a four-game-goal-scoring streak, and had already tallied an assist, cut that deficit back down to one, taking a Bianchini pass and punching it home for her sixth of the season. While the Viks fought hard the rest of the way they couldn’t overcome the Montana advan- tage and were eliminated from the tournament. Amanda Howie, thanks to her strong play, earned herself a place on the Big Sky All-Tournament Team.
