A BRIEF PROFILE OF THE COLLEGE

Govt J.Buana College, was established in 1983 and was provincialised by the Govt of on October 2007. It is permanently affiliated to and is now 2f and 12b category under UGC. It is also an accredited college under NAAC.

The institution is named after Shri J.Buana (L) who was a Padma Shree Awardee. He came up with a handsome donation of Rupees Two Lakhs for its at its infant stage. Being established to cater to the needs of the locality and the poorer section for higher , it is providing education to hundreds of students. Most of the graduates from this college are able to find employment in various services within and outside the state.

The College is an Under Graduate Co-ed Arts College offering Core subjects in English, Mizo, , , , Education, Political and Public Administration. With the active cooperation of all the faculty members, the institution is producing good academic results and has now earned recognition all over the state.

VISION & OBJECTIVE

The vision of the college is to impart quality education and to develop the personality of the students. The college motto “Service, Diligence, Honesty” is the guiding light of the college in its endeavour to achieve excellence in teaching and learning processes. It also tries its level best to bring about awareness among the students regarding service to the society. The main mission and objective of the college is therefore to

1 produce quality human resources who would be employable in all areas and would prove to be good citizens for the country.

SECTION II

REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE CHOICE-BASED CREDIT AND GRADING SYSTEM IN UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

as per the Mizoram University Notification

1. The Under Graduate Programme shall consist of three academic years with two semesters in each year. The first Academic year shall comprise of the first and second semesters, the second academic year – the third and fourth semesters and the third academic year – the fifth and sixth semesters. 2. The working days for each semester shall not be less than 90 excluding holidays / sports / examination / semester break / vacation, if any. 3. A candidate shall register his / her name with the University in the first semester itself. 4. A candidate can avail a maximum of 10 semesters – 5 years (in one stretch). 5. A candidate has to earn a minimum of 140 Credits, for successful completion of under graduate degree, with a distribution of credits for different course categories as in the table below:

Type of Courses The courses for undergraduate degree shall be of three kinds: 1) Foundation courses (FC): Foundation courses are courses based upon the content that leads to knowledge enhancement and man making education. 2) Core courses: These courses are to be compulsorily studied by a student as a core requirement of programme in a said discipline of the study. It comprises of two types: i. Major core Courses (CC): These courses belong to subject in which student receive degree with Major. ii. Elective Core Courses (EC): These courses belong to two other elective subjects opted by student from allowed subject combinations along with a Major subject during 1st and 2nd years.

2. Eligibility for Admission a) Pass in the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) Examination or its equivalent conducted by any recognized Board of the State or Central Government. b) Candidates passing with vocational courses, the equivalence may be decided by the College authority.

3. Documents required at the time of admission

a) Transfer Certificate from the Institution last attended. b) Attested copy of Certifcate and Mark sheet of HSLC or equivalent. c) Attested copy of Certificate and Mark sheet of HSSLC or equivelant

4. Transfer of College A student shall not be permitted to avail local transfer of the College. Transfers, other than local shall be considered on the merit of each case.

5. Change of Examination Centre

Change of Examination Centre may be permitted strictly on the merit of each case. A student shall not be allowed to change the examination centre to a college where the subject opted by him / her is not taught.

6. Migration For the purpose of admission to this College, the students migrating from other University / Boards/ Institutes, admission for such shall be decided on the merit of the case.

SECTION III

GOVT J.BUANA COLLEGE REGULATIONS REGARDING ADMISSION

The admission process commences after the declaration of the results of the HSSLC examinations of the Mizoram Board of School Education. sAdmission shall be open for a period of 10 (ten) working days, taking the next day of publication of HSSLC results of MBSE as the first day.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of applicants will be based on Class XII marks as per the following criteria A. Direct Admission will be given to candidates who have passed Class XII in the first and second division on a first come first serve basis. However, a candidate should have secured 50% marks in the subject opted for Core. Direct admission will be open for a period of 10 working days commencing from the day after the publication of HSSLC Results by the MBSE.

B. Selection of candidates who have passed in the third division will be done by the college authority. Admission will be open for 10 working days commencing from the day after the publication of HSSLC results by the MBSE. The list of selected candidates will be put up on the Notice Board on the 12th working day. Selected students are to take admission on the following two days. Selected student failing to take admission during the stipulated time will forfeit their seats which may be given to other students according to merit.

C. Reservations: Reservations will be made for i. Children of employees of the college – 3% ii. Physically challenged / differently abled persons. Minimum criteria, however will be applicable – 3% iii. Outstanding sportspersons – 3% iv. Specially gifted persons – 3% v. Children of Alumni - 2% Note: 1) A candidate may apply in more than one subject. Students applying for admission in more than one subject should use separate application forms indicating their preference as ‘first choice’ and ‘second choice’. 2) Submission of Application form and admission will be open between 10:30am – 1:00pm.

SECTION IV CONDUCT OF EXAMINATIONS

Examination and Assessment Each course shall be evaluated at the scale of 100. For all courses, irrespective of theory and practical, there shall be continuous internal assessment carrying 25 marks and an end-semester examination carrying 75 marks.

1) Continuous Assessment: The outline for continuous assessment activities shall be proposed by the college before the commencement of the semester. Some suggested parameters of Continuous Assessment are class tests, seminars, quiz, home assignments, project, and other methods. However, there shall be series of tests at regular intervals for each course (paper) incorporating various parameters. Distribution of Marks in Continuous Assessment: Two tests - 10 Assignment - 10 Attendance - 5 Total - 25 Attendance evaluation for each course shall be as below: Attendance Marks 90% and above 5 85 to 89.9% 4 80 to 84.9% 3 76 to 79.9% 2 75 to 75.9% 1

2) The End-Semester Examination For each Course (separately for theory and practical) end-semester examination shall be conducted for 75 marks each. Finally the marks obtained in internal assessment and end-semester examination in each course shall be pooled and the % marks obtained shall be calculated by the Examination Department, MZU.

Minimum Marks for passing of a course and passing rules 1. A minimum of 140 Credits are required for awarding B.A degree. 2. For passing of each course a candidate must secure a minimum of 40% marks (equivalent Grade C) in end semester examination. For internal assessment there shall be no passing marks. However, grading shall be based on marks obtained in both components i.e internal assessment and end semester examination. 3. In any case a student shall not be allowed to repeat a course for internal assessment component. 4. A candidate shall be permitted to proceed from the first semester up to final semester irrespective of his / her failure in any of the semester examination subject to condition that the candidate shall appear for all the arrear papers of each course(s) along with the concerned semester examinations.

Attendance

A candidate shall be eligible to appear in the end-semester examination only if he / she attend a minimum of 75% attendance as per University ordinance.

GRADING SYSTEM 1) Each course (paper) shall be graded on the basis of marks obtained (on scaled marks of 100) during a semester.

2) Letter Grades and Grade Points: There shall be absolute grading where marks obtained (out of 100) by a student in a course is converted to a Grade on a 10-point scale as given below

SECTION VII

CODE OF CONDUCT

The College maintains strict discipline. Any student seeking admission to the college must observe the following norms:

1) Regular attendance of classes. A student is eligible to write the End Semester Examinations only if the student has a minimum attendance of 75% in aggregate in all the subjects. Students are not entitled to any leave of absence. In case of emergency and unavoidable circumstances, an application supported by relevant documents should be submitted to the Principal. 2) Dress of the student must be decent. 3) Smoking and the use of alcoholic beverages and drugs are forbidden in the College Campus. Any student found smoking, drinking liquor, taking / using drugs or any other intoxicants will summarily invite disciplinary action even leading to dismissal. 4) As per Supreme Court Orders, ragging in the college is strictly prohibited. If any incident of ragging is practiced, the concerned student(s) would face disciplinary action. 5) Students should actively participate and co-operate in the college social work and in other co-curricular activities. 6) Students should not involve themselves in any illegal activities. 7) Communal harmony should be preserved and fostered within the College Campus. There should be no discrimination among the students on the basis of religion, gender, tribe or class. 8) Students should have an identity card duly signed by the Principal. 9) The college has a T.Shirt and this may be worn on every Wednesday. It will also be mandatory to wear the college T.Shirt on some occasions like College Week and other important functions. Drinking and committing social evils while wearing College T.Shirt in such a way as to bring dishonor to the College will be followed by disciplinary action. 10) All bonafied students owe their allegience to the College and are expected to be available when and where the College demands.

COLLEGE FACILITIES

LIBRARY

The College wish that students will derive maximum utilization of the college library and it encourages the students to use the Library not only for borrowing books but also for doing reference work. The College Central Library has around 7620 + books, 12 journals and references. All the books are automated using SOL 2.0. Each student will be given a Library Card which will have a record of the books borrowed. The cards will be issued at the beginning of the course on production of the College Identity Card duly signed by the Principal. Students will be allowed to borrow a maximum number of two books at a given time. A book may be kept by a student for a maximum of 7 days only, after which it will have to be returned to the Library. If a student fails to return the books on the appointed day, a fine of Rs. 2/- per day will be charged.

All the departments of the college have their respective Departmental Libraries where a number of books of the concerned subjects are kept. Students can read and borrow books from their own departmental libraries.

COLLEGE CANTEEN:

The College Canteen is located within the campus. Different types of delicious food at a reasonable price are available in the Canteen for the staff and students. The Canteen also serves as a meeting place where students have the opportunity to make new friends, meet and chat with their friends during their off- periods. Students enjoy the leisure of sharing jokes and informal discussion on current topics and news items often takes place in the Canteen.

SEMINAR HALL:

The College has a Seminar Hall with a seating capacity of approximately 120 people. It is well furnished with comfortable chairs and tables. It is equipped with hi-tech LCD Projector for Power-Point Presentation and other advanced form of Presentation. The Seminar Hall is

11 utilised as an important platform for interactive programmes of the college. National,State,Local,Institutional Level Seminars, Workshops, Symposiums, Confenrences, etc. are frequently hosted at the Seminar Hall.

SCHOLARSHIP

The State Government grants Post-Matric Scholarship to the students belonging to the ST / SC. Application for scholarship is to be submitted online through the official website of Mizoram Board of Scholarship, Gov’t of Mizoram (https://scholarships.mizoram.gov.in)

UGC RESOURCE CENTRE

The College has a UGC Resource Centre which is open for the students and staff on all working days. It provides access to the Internet and to cater to the needs of the students in the field of information . The college also provides free wi-fi internet access to the students in the college campus

SPOKEN ENGLISH AND

A Spoken English classes had been conducted in the college for some years. A separate class for Spoken Hindi has been conducted from the 2016 – 2017 session and will be continued in the current session. These classes are expected to be beneficial for the students as it would make them more employable after their graduation.

COMPUTER CLASSES

Computer class has been started from 2016 – 2017 session in collaboration with NIELIT. Triple C (CCC) courses are taught by a qualified instructor.

REMEDIAL COACHING CLASS

Students having any back papers in the earlier semesters attend Remedial Coaching classes. These classes are held after the regular classes are over.

STUDENTS FEEDBACK

Students Feedback System was introduced by IQAC of the College and is practiced for some years. Students especially the senior students provide a feedback anonymously on the teachers through a common feedback form.

LANGUAGE LAB

The college has a well equipped Language Lab. 10 + 1 computers are installed in the Lab using language software SANAKO. This Lab can be used by the Language students and other departments of the college.

MENTOR – WARD SYSTEM

The college is introducing a mentor-ward system to improve the work culture of the students and to create a better relation between the teachers and the students. Under this system, students are divided into groups / wards and are to be supervised or guided by a teacher who would be their mentors.

SECTION IX CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Students’ Union (S. U):

The Students’ Union is the students’ body concerned with looking after the welfare of the students. It carries out various extra-curricular activities for the college as a whole. It provides personal, educational guidelines or overall development of the students. General Elections are held annually and the elected leaders function under the guidance of the Teachers in charge. They organize important events like College Week, Freshers’ Social, etc., and publish annual college magazine.

Career Counselling and Placement Cell:

Career Counselling and Placement Cell is set up in the College for the benefit of the students. The Cell functions with the objective of rendering guidance, assisstance and inspiring the students for achieving their career goals. The Cell has undertaken various enriching career-related programmes and activities by inviting experts on career-prospect in different job-oriented fields. It organises Career Awareness Campaigns, Seminars, Workshops, Career Fest, etc. to motivate and groom the students in pursuing their choice of career . The Cell also focuses on soft-skills development training to enhance the employability of the students.

Equal Opprotunity Cell:

Equal Opportunity Cell organises workshops and seminars to achieve the general outlook and mental horizon of the students for better inclusion and participation. It also aims to sensitize students on gender issues and create awareness on sexual harassment laws, protection of women and children under IPC etc.

National Service Scheme (NSS):

It is a voluntary organization of college students under the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development .The aim of NSS is to inculcate social consciousness and a sense of responsibility, discipline and dignity of labour among the youths. It is vibrant with activities and has undertaken Health Education and Cleanliness Programmes. It organizes Environmental Awareness Programmes, HIV/AIDS Awareness programmes, Blood Donation camps and Health Camps in the campus and in remote areas. The volunteers represent the College in seminars and other training programmes like the National Integration Camps at the National Level.

Adventure Club:

The Adventure Club has been established in the college for those students who are interested in outdoor activities and excursions. Members of the club participate in outdoor adventures like hiking, rock climbing, white water rafting and other expeditions. The expeditions are also educational in purpose.

Evangelical Union:

The College has an Evangelical Union to cater to the religious needs of the students. It organizes prayer meetings, worship service and crusades. Funds are raised by the students themselves and they often help orphanages and homes for the needy

Music Club:

The Music Club functions an outlet for students interested in music to get together and express themseslves. It aims to develop the musical talents of students and provide a platform for budding students to acheive their fullest potential. It also seeks to advance the message of love and brotherhood through the universal language of music.

Cultural Club:

The Cultural Club seeks to encourage students to keep in touch with the rich values, customs and traditions of their culture through participation in cultural activities. The Club organises various activiteis and programmes that will help the students in the wholesome development of the students by giving them self-awareness, confidence and pride in their cultural heritage. The Club also seeks to expose students to the rich and varied cultural traditions of and the wider world..

Literary Club:

The objective of the Literary Club is to inspire students to develop interest in reading and writng by fostering in them a taste for literature and language. It aims to develop analytical and critical thinking to help students appreciate different types of literature and sharpen their debate and oratory skills. The Club also aims to provide a platform for students to showcase their own creative and crtical works.

Eco Club:

The Club seeks to create awareness on enviromental issues through its activities which include seeking solutions to environmental problems. It aims to empower students to become green ambassadors by making them

15 aware of the need to protect and conserve the ecosystem. The Club conducts programmes with a view to love,care and nurture nature

Educational Tour:

The College frequently conducts study tours for selected students in and outside Mizoram.
