COACH BIOGRAPHY SERIES

MIKE MCCOURT COACH - RIDLEY COLLEGE TIGERS

Born and raised in Brockville, , Coach McCourt enjoyed a successful playing career followed by a long and distinguished coaching career that has covered the spectrum of leagues including minor professional, Tier 2, the NCAA and the (OHL). Coach McCourt played three seasons with the Brockville Braves of the CCHL, claiming numerous team and league awards including Best Defenseman, garnering him a scholarship to St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. While at university, he was a four-year letter winner and captain during the 1991-92 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships and NCAA Quarter Finals. Coach McCourt was the recipient of the Peter McGeough Award as the Saints Top Defenseman as well as league honors as a member of the ECAC All-Rookie Team in his freshman year and League All-Star as a senior. Graduating in 1994, Coach McCourt embarked on an eight-year playing career, which included stops with the Canadian National Team, the AHL and the IHL. He then ventured overseas and played for three seasons in Europe for teams in Finland, Germany and Italy. After a career-ending shoulder injury, he was added to the Fresno Falcons coaching staff where he captured a WCHL championship. He then proceeded to Clarkson University (ECAC) as an associate coach for a year before taking over as Head Coach and General Manager of his hometown team, the Brockville Braves. In three seasons he graduated over 40 of his players on to the NCAA, CIS and OHL. His success and ability to develop players led him to Robert Morris University as an Associate Coach before joining the Niagara IceDogs of the OHL. In three seasons in Niagara, two as an Associate Coach and one as the Head Coach, the team earned a playoff spot each year while producing a number of NHL draft picks including first round picks Alex Pietrangelo (St. Louis Blues), (), () and Mark Visentin (Phoenix Coyotes).

MARK METZGER

SKATING AND SKILLS COACH -

Mark is a premier player development coach within the New York State. Owner and operator of Precision Hockey, Mark runs his programmes out of Buffalo, New York and has trained over 5,000 players from the NHL, AHL, OHL, ECHL, NCAA, USHL, NAHL, Prep School, Junior, and high school. In July 2016, Mark was hired by the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes to work with their AHL team, the Charlotte Checkers, as their skating and skills coach.

WES WOLFE

ASSISTANT COACH - ERIE OTTERS

Originally from Niagara Falls, Wes Wolfe is an Assistant Coach for the 2017 Ontario Hockey League Champions, the Erie Otters. Prior to serving Erie for the past three seasons, Wes served as the Head Coach and Assistant General Manager of the St. Catharines Falcons. He has also coached at several camps and clinics including the OHL Combine, OHL/OHF U15 programme and CAN/AM Hockey. Wes coached at the AAA level in the now defunct Niagara Rivermen system for four years and is a High Performance 1 coach. In addition to his roles in coaching, Wes also worked for Stathletes Inc. doing comprehensive video and hockey analytics for NHL, NCAA and Major Junior teams across North America.

JASON BARRON

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, PLAYER DEVELOPMENT - ERIE OTTERS PREP GOALIE COACH - RIDLEY COLLEGE

Born and raised in St. Catharines, Ontario, Jason grew up playing travel and varsity hockey in St. Catharines before graduating into the coaching ranks. Jason is currently the Assistant Director of Player Development for the Erie Otters in the OHL, overseeing prospect development within the organization. Jason has been with Ben Vanderklok Goaltending (Ben is currently the Goalie Coach of the in the NHL) for the past eight years, serving the past two seasons as the Head Instructor and Regional Coordinator. Jason instills a curriculum that coincides with the teaching philosophy of Ben Vanderklok Goaltending. Jason works with from Tyke to Major Junior hockey and currently coaches with the OHL/OHF U15 Programme of Excellence. Jason has coached previously with Junior B and AAA hockey and graduated multiple goaltenders onto NCAA and OHL levels. Jason was previously the Goalie Coach for Team OMHA at the OHL Gold Cup. Jason is a student of the game and a big believer in continuous learning both as an athlete and as a coach. Jason is a NCCP Goaltending 1 certified coach and Brock University Sport Management graduate.

ZACK JONES PREP ASSISTANT COACH - RIDLEY COLLEGE

Born and raised in St. Catharines, Ontario, Zack grew up playing travel and varsity hockey in St. Catharines followed by four years of Junior B: two years for the St. Catharines Falcons and two years with the Thorold Blackhawks. Zack has been a power skating instructor for over 12 years, working with local programmes of Kathi Plug and Chris Risi. Zack completed his degree in Community Recreation and Leisure studies with a minor in Phys. Ed Kinesiology from Brock University and went on to complete his teaching degree at Medaille College in Buffalo, New York. Zack began at Ridley as a hockey coach for the U14 programme. Over the past four years, Zack has been an Assistant Head of House in Merritt North as well as Assistant Coach of the Prep Boys Hockey Team. Zack has brought his knowledge to Ridley and continues to head the Learn to Skate programme at Ridley for Lower School.

CHRIS RISI

INSTRUCTOR - PREMIER POWER SKATING

Chris has an impressive hockey resume prior to coaching, playing four years of NCAA Division 1 hockey at Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania. Prior to joining Mercyhurst, Chris played five years of Junior B hockey with the Thorold Blackhawks where he won both a Golden Horseshoe League (GOJHL) Championship and an All-Ontario Sutherland Cup Championship. During his playing career, Chris was a two-time GOJHL MVP and named to the Atlantic Hockey League’s All-Tournament Team. Chris has over a decade of power skating instruction experience and is one of the premier power skating minds in southern Ontario.
