Ruiz Legacy Program Abstract: SSpecies introductions have increased dramatically in number, rate, and magnitude of impact in recent decades. In marine systems, invertebrates are the largest and most diverse component of coastal invasions throughout the world. Ascidians are conspicuous and well-studied members of this group, however, much of what is known about their invasion history is limited to particular species or locations. Here, we provide a large-scale assessment of invasions, using an extensive literature review and standardized field surveys, to characterize the invasion dynamics of non-native ascidians in the continental United States and Alaska. -

All the species are reported for the first time from Pakistan. These species are Hydractinia epidocleensis, Pennaria disticha, Eudendrium capillare, Orthopyxis cf. crenata, Clytia noliformis, C. hummelincki, Dynamena crisioides, D. quadridentata, Sertularia distans, Pycnotheca mirabilis and Macrorhynchia philippina. In comparison to other invertebrates, TAXONOMIC ENUMERATION hydroids are one of the least known groups of marine animals from the coast of Pakistan Haque Family BOUGAINVILLIIDAE (1977) reported a few Cnidaria from the Pakistani Genus HYDRACTINIA Van Beneden, 1841 coast including two hydroids i.e. Plumularia flabellum Allman, 1883 (= P. insignis Allman, 1. Hydractinia epidocleensis Leloup, 1931 1883) and Campanularia juncea Allman, 1874 (= (Fig. 1) Thyroscyphus junceus (Allman, 1876) from Keamari and Bhit Island, Karachi, respectively. Ahmed and Hameed (1999), Ahmed et al. (1978) and Haq et al. (1978) have mentioned the presence of hydroids in various habitats along the coast of Pakistan. Javed and Mustaquim (1995) reported Sertularia turbinata (Lamouroux, 1816) from Manora Channel, Karachi. The present paper describes eleven species of Cnidaria collected from the Pakistani coast all of which are new records for Pakistan. -

A fragment of the 17 mitochondrial gene Cytochrome c Oxidase subunit I (COI) was sequenced for 291colonies of 18 one population in Plymouth (UK), which was monitored for nine years from its initial 19 discovery. A total of 238 colonies from 12 localities were also sequenced for population 20 structure analyses. The temporal monitoring of the Plymouth population showed a progressive 21 loss of genetic diversity over time attributable to a strong initial bottleneck followed by 22 genetic drift and/or selection. Population genetic structure was consistent with the historical 23 records of this introduction, which probably originated from oyster farming activities in 1 24 France, from where the species spread further to UK and Spain. Only one population in 25 France displayed high levels of genetic diversity, and most of the remaining populations 26 presented very low variability. -

India has a coastline of 8,118 km, with an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of 2.02 million sq km and a continental shelf area of 468,000 sq km, spread across 10 coastal States and seven Union Territories, including the islands of Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep. Indian coastal waters are extremely diverse attributing to the geomorphologic and climatic variations along the coast. The coastal and marine habitat includes near shore, gulf waters, creeks, tidal flats, mud flats, coastal dunes, mangroves, marshes, wetlands, seaweed and seagrass beds, deltaic plains, estuaries, lagoons and coral reefs. There are four major coral reef areas in India-along the coasts of the Andaman and Nicobar group of islands, the Lakshadweep group of islands, the Gulf of Mannar and the Gulf of Kachchh . The Andaman and Nicobar group is the richest in terms of diversity. -

In 1923 Stechow enumerated the following five species of the genus Eudendrium in his list of hydroid-fauna in the Japanese waters: Eudendrium capillare Alder vaginatumEudendrium Allman Eudendrium arrnstrongi Stechow Eudendrium rameum (Pallas) Eudendrium racemosum (Gmelin) Since that time, the species of Eudendrium were treated three times; the first time by Fraser (1935) who described his new species E. biseriale from the specimens in Sagami Bay, the other times by Leloup (1938) and by the present writer (1950), in both cases E. capillare was reported. Recently the writer has had the opportunity to examine examples of Eudendrium collected from several localities in Japan, and found among them 15 different species of this genus, including 6 new species. Colony comprising individuals and clusters of female polyps on a dead crustose bryozoan; no gastrozooids or This report describes a collection of five hydroid species from dactylozooids present. Hydrorhiza ramified, firmly adherent to south-eastern Australia. A new species, Hydractinia gelinea is described. There is a new but somewhat doubtful record of substrate, stolons narrow, tubular, perisarc thin and smooth. Amphinema dinema. The range of Eudendrium pennycuikae Gonozooids sessile, robust, with a whorl of 8−12 thick is extended from subtropical Queensland to cool temperate tentacles surrounding a prominent dome-shaped hypostome; southern Australia. Pennaria wilsoni and Ectopleura exxonia tentacles with prominent whorls of nematocysts. Hypostome are redescribed in detail, the latter being recorded for the first high dome-shaped. Gonophores fixed sporosacs borne in tight time from New Zealand. -
Seasearch Annual Report 2016
ANNUAL REPORT 2016 This report summarises Seasearch activities throughout Britain and Ireland in 2016. It includes a summary of the main surveys undertaken (pages 2-5), reports produced and a summary of the data collected. This includes records of Priority habitats and species, locally important features and nationally scarce and rare species (pages 6-9) and habitats (pages 9- 11). It also includes a summary of the training courses run for volunteer divers (page 12) and information on how Seasearch is organised and the data is managed and made available (page 13). All of the reports referred to may be downloaded from the Seasearch website and the species data may be accessed through the National Biodiversity Network website. More detailed datasets are available on request. Seasearch Surveys 2016 Seasearch continued to target much of its survey activity in existing and proposed marine protected areas. In England 23 new Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) were designated in January 2016, making a total of 50; four Northern Ireland MCZs, including the site at Waterfoot Bay proposed by Seasearch, were designated in December 2016. The following pages summarise the main surveys undertaken in 2016. They were arranged by Seasearch Coordinators and other volunteers; we would like to thank all of the organisations who supported survey activity at a local level. In addition to the surveys outlined here there were many other dives both organised by Seasearch coordinators and undertaken by individual divers. The map shows the location of all the 2016 dives. Data from all of the surveys has been entered into the Marine Recorder database and can be freely accessed on the National Biodiversity Network website www.nbn.org.uk. -
