2019 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

BLUE MOUNTAIN COLLEGE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As the season of thanksgiving approaches, the Blue Mountain College family has much for which to be grateful. For each of the 655 students who have come to the Hill this fall to further their education we say thanks be to God for the privilege of providing this record group of students with a Christ-centered educational experience. When the high school students who are taking dual credit courses are included, our fall enrollment comes in at 818! Soli Deo Gloria!

Returning students and new students arrived on campus this fall to find many upgrades, including the newly reno- vated Ray Dining Hall, improvements to Cockroft and Whitfield residence halls, the addition of the Honors House and the Loft, extensive improvements to campus wi-fi, lights on the intramural field, an expanded walking trail, new flooring in Guyton Library, a new deck at the Southplex, and the first phase of a campus mural. We are grateful to each gracious donor whose gifts made these improvements possible. We are especially grateful to our alumni for their tireless efforts to complete the restoration of the Palmer-Donnell House, which was dedicated as the College’s new welcome center and alumni house at the 2019 Homecoming on the Hill celebration.

Among this large group of students are a record number of international residents (27) from Australia to Zambia and a host of places in between. Also occupying a prominent place in this year’s entering class are the young men and women who have been selected as Scholars of Distinction in our first Honors College. Thirteen students com- prise this group. In addition to their studies, these students are participating in numerous leadership and cultural development initiatives both on campus and throughout the state.

This fall has afforded the BMC family a host of remarkable opportunities, including the privilege of welcoming to campus none other than Mrs. Lottie Palmer Donnell and Mother Berry (portrayed respectively by Lee Smith Bennett and Christi Mitchell) as special guests for the 2019 Founders Day celebration. The 2019 meeting of the Baptist Convention featured a performance by the combined choirs of BMC, , and , marking the first time the state’s three Baptist institutions of higher learning have joined forces for such an initiative. Two hundred beautiful voices lifting the name of God on high was indeed a once-in-a- lifetime worship experience! Highlighting our fall is the revival service that began on our campus on October 14 and has resulted in at least fifteen students making decisions for Christ.

I speak on behalf of our entire community in extending to you our heartfelt appreciation for your encourage- ment, your prayers, and your faithful support. Thank you for partnering with us to pursue, practice, and promote Christ-centered excellence at Blue Mountain College!

Futral Conference Room

After twenty-years of remarkable service as the Executive Director/Treasurer of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board, our beloved Dr. Jim Futral has announced his plans to retire. How blessed we have been by this great leader’s commit- ment to our Lord, to the Gospel, and to Mississippi Baptists! An alumnus of Blue Mountain College, Dr. Futral holds a very special place in our hearts. He is, without question, one of our “favorite sons.”

As an expression of gratitude for the many ways in which he has inspired, encouraged, and equipped us through his leadership and through his faithful preaching of God’s Word, the Board of Trustees of Blue Mountain College plans to construct a conference room to be named in Dr. Futral’s honor. This room, located in the Paschal Student Union Build- ing, will serve as a “sanctuary” for Dr. Futral’s expansive collection of eagle sculptures, figurines, and paintings currently housed in his office at the Baptist building in Jackson. The Futral room will also house the pulpit from which the Gospel was preached on the occasion of his surrendering his life to Christ—the starting point for an incredible journey to fulfill God’s call on his life......

5 Student Activity Center

We have a tremendous need for a 12,000 square foot activity center at the BMC Sportsplex. When completed, this facility would be the home of the volleyball Toppers and would pro- vide our basketball Toppers additional practice space as well as space for other student activities.

Projected Cost: $1,000,000

6 School of Nursing Over one hundred years ago the early leaders of Blue Mountain College labored tirelessly to launch a healthcare system that would serve as a “healing ministry” to the people of the Mid-South. Those early efforts influenced the founding of the Baptist Memorial Healthcare network that now provides medical care to residents across our region. Blue Mountain College now seeks to extend its teaching and preaching ministries to include a healing component in the form of a school of nursing. We have established a nursing advisory board and will fully implement the degree when the $1 million in program start-up funds have been secured.

7 BMC Campus2019 Revival

evival is a great culture-changing movement that sweeps through an area from an outpouring of the Spirit of God, upon His people, that divinely enables them to live lives like the people of God. The result is the restoration of Joy in God’s people and the salvation of the lost. Although the great revival movements sweep entire regions, they each have a beginning somewhere. They may begin with personal revival in a local church, a college campus, or sometimes they occur spontaneously in different places and sweep together. We are encouraged to know that God could choose to use a small place in a big way. With the start of the fall semester, an expectation for a God movement at Blue Mountain College was beginning. The sense of peace and the activity of God through students, staff, and faculty permeated the atmo- sphere of the College. Through prayer, the LORD led Dr. Meeks to invite Dr. Ed Newton to preach and our own Exalt Praise Team to lead the campus Revival. A saturation of prayer over the campus became the seedbed for a movement of God that is continuing. The BMC family packed all three services on Monday morning, Monday night, and Tuesday morning. In each service, God overwhelmed us with his presence. Over fifty responded by publically confessing sin one to another and 14 students were saved. The following week those students connected with other students for structured discipleship. The Ministerial Association provided Discipleship material and Dr. McMillin gifted them a Bible from the College. While the revival services are over, the revival continues at Blue Mountain College. Many students following revival responded to counseling through brokenness over sin. Students testify of the freedom Jesus provided from hurt, hang-ups, and habits. For all of this, we give thanks to God! May He continue to keep the spiritual fire burning and may we his faithful servants guard that flame!

8 Miss Johnnie’s Resolution

A PROCLAMATION BY THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND REPRESENTATIVE MAC HUDDLESTON MOURNING THE LOSS AND COMMEMORATING THE LIFE OF DR. JOHNNIE M. ARMSTRONG AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HER PASSING

WHEREAS, it is written in Ecclesiastes 3:1 that “To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the Heaven,” and as such, the immaculate author and finisher of our soul’s destiny summoned the mortal presence of dearly beloved, Dr. Johnnie M. Armstrong, to eternal rest, rendering great sorrow and loss to her family and friends; and

WHEREAS, on Monday, September 30, 2019, Blue Mountain College and the entirety of Blue Mountain, Mississippi, lost beloved educator, role model of servant leadership, mentor, coach, wonderful friend and true handmaiden of the Lord, with the passing of Dr. Armstrong, at the blessed age of 87 years, and there is now a hush in our hearts as we come together to pay our respects to the memory of one who has been called to join that innumerable heavenly caravan; and

WHEREAS, a native of Nashville, Tennessee, born on April 23, 1932, to the late Mr. Clyde and Mrs. Ethel Hutcherson Armstrong, “Miss Johnnie,” as she was endearingly called, was a distinguished 1953 alum of Blue Mountain College, who garnered the title as campus luminary after returning to the college in 1954 as associate professor of physical education, and provided sound leadership and direction in the development of curriculum before being tapped as the school’s first Athletics Director in 1970, a role that enabled her to introduce the college’s first women’s NAIA basketball program in 1972 and the first women’s NAIA tennis program 1986; and

WHEREAS, for 64 years, from 1954 until 2018, Dr. Armstrong served Blue Mountain College as an outstanding faculty member - a dedicated teacher in the field of health, physical education and activity courses under five different collegiate presi- dential administrations, who established a legacy as a pioneer in both academics and athletics after being named as Chair of the Department of Physical Education and Women’s Intramural Director in 1954, wherein she established a physical education majors program in 1963; and

9 WHEREAS, “Miss Johnnie” spread her wings and took flight as an exemplar of postsecondary education on the state and national stages through her service as an ambassador for intercollegiate athletic competition by affiliating with numerous orga- nizations while fulfilling her academic responsibilities, including: holding the office of Mississippi Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD); the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW); the National Asso- ciation of Intercollegiate Athletics; the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics the District Executive Board; the Mid-South Region Coordinating Committee; and chairperson of the TranSouth Athletic Directors Groups; and

WHEREAS, one who strove with diligence to advance her profession, Dr. Armstrong amassed a reputation of respect and admiration from her students, peers and colleagues all over the nation, which positioned her to be recognized with countless awards and honors, some of which include: Female Athletics Administrator of the Year - District 24; NAIA Athletic Administrator of the Year; Mississippi Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Dance “Pride in Teaching” Award; National Asso- ciation for Girls and Women in Sports “Pathfinder Award”; Blue Mountain College Outstanding Faculty Member Award (1979 and 2000); Higher Education Appreciation Day - Working for Academic Excellence (HEADWAE) Award (1988 and 1997); the dedication of the Blue Mountain College Fitness Center Johnnie Armstrong Gal-ry (2002); the dedication of the new floor in Tyler Gymnasium as Johnnie Armstrong Court (2017); and “Meritorious Service” induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame (2006); and

WHEREAS, Miss Johnnie was instrumental in the development of a Christian camp, Camp Crestridge for Girls, in Ridge- crest, North Carolina, and from 1955 to 1988 served as assistant director, and eventually as director, yet even in her retirement, she remained zealously committed to her alma mater, as Special Ambassador of BMC, working closely with the Office of the President and Dr. Barbara Childers McMillin; and

WHEREAS, a God-fearing Christian before all other roles she assumed, Dr. Armstrong was the living embodiment of a woman of Proverbs 31:10 distinction and possessing the ambitious spirit akin to that of King David, she was a woman after God’s own heart, who was a devoted member of Lowrey Memorial Baptist Church in Blue Mountain since the beginning of her student years at Blue Mountain College, where she served in many capacities, but foremost was her office of encourager, and demonstrated a great faith and commitment to Jesus Christ, her family and her beloved Blue Mountain College community; and

WHEREAS, having made life’s transition from earthly travailing to heavenly reward to now stand upon the golden celestial shores of spiritual paradise in a wonderful reunion with her parents and sister, Jewell Armstrong Babson, who each answered God’s summons to life eternal before her and now beckon her arrival, the enduring legacy of Dr. Armstrong, a woman held in high regard by friends and family as a precious gift from God, will continue to refresh the hearts and memories of her beloved survivors: cous- in, Tommy Duane Arnold; niece, Lee Ann Babson Johnson; adopted family, Bob and Linda Hamil Orwig; three godchildren, Mary Hamil Gilbert, Chad Orwig and Gabriel Orwig; a host of co-workers and close associates who claim her as “family” and hundreds of students and summer campers to whom she was a second mom; and

WHEREAS, in her transfiguration from mortality to immortality, Dr. Armstrong now adorns the spiritual raiment awaiting the bridegroom’s return in holy anticipation of that wondrous event recorded in Revelation 21:1-2 that says “And I saw a new Heav- en and a new earth: for the first Heaven and the first earth passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of Heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”; and

WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize and honor the lives of such fine Mississippians as those of Dr. Johnnie M. Armstrong’s esteemed caliber, whose heart radiated with the warmth and brightness of a thousand suns, and who loved her family, friends and all things Blue Mountain, unconditionally, bringing glory and honor to Blue Mountain College and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, as members of the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi, we do hereby mourn the loss and commemorate the life of Dr. Johnnie M. Armstrong, and express deepest sympathy to her family and friends upon her passing.

THIS, the 8th day of October, 2019.
