FROM THE BOARD

A MONTHLY SUMMARY OF BOARD HIGHLIGHTS AND DECISIONS MADE BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES DURING THE MONTH OF MAY 2008 ______

May 7, Human Resources, Program and Religious Affairs Committee

TCDSB Launches History of Board “We Remember, We Believe” The Trustees of the Toronto Catholic District School Board have released the book We Remember, We Believe by Robert T. Dixon.

Commissioned by the Board of Trustees, the book is an account of the amalgamation of many small separate school boards into what is now known as the Toronto Catholic District School Board. It also narrates the story of the sacrifices, commitment and determination of Toronto’s religious orders and the Catholic community to establish and expand Catholic schools in the Toronto area. Archbishop Thomas Collins and a number of representatives from education and Toronto’s founding religious orders were in attendance.

The Records Department provided a historical display for the launch of the book, which included photos and original written documentation from the Board’s inception. The book is distributed by the TCDSB at a cost of $32.00. For further information, please visit the website: www.tcdsb.org.

Archbishop Tom Collins, Author Dr. Robert Dixon, Trustees Angela Kennedy, Ann Andrachuk, Catherine LeBlanc-Miller, Joseph Martino, Maria Rizzo, Mary Cicogna.

Board Proclaims Asian Heritage Month May has been proclaimed as Asian Heritage Month in recognition of the contribution of the Asian community within the Toronto Catholic District School Board. The proclamation is posted on the Board’s website at www.tcdsb.org.

Partnership with Rotary Club TCDSB’s Student Success and Cooperative Education departments will explore and facilitate learning opportunities for students through a partnership with the Rotary Club of Etobicoke in the 2008-2009 school year. The club’s “Camp Enterprise” is geared to the development of leadership and team building skills by utilizing community experts.

Implementation of Year-round Schooling Delayed The Board had approved in principle the introduction of year-round schooling at two elementary and two secondary school sites for the 2009-2010 school year. The Board is delaying the introduction of this pilot project due to current budgetary considerations. The proposed date for implementation is now 2010-2011. A follow up report will come before the Board in September 2009.

Signing Authority The Deputy Director of Planning and Facilities has been given signing authority. The title has been amended to include Assistant Secretary of the Board to provide him with lawful authority to be a signing officer of TCDSB.

Change to School Bus Transportation for St. John’s Students With respect to school bus transportation for students living in the Greenwood Development, the Board approved the following: ƒ As of June 30, 2008 any new students from the Greenwood Development will be directed to St. Denis Catholic School. ƒ Existing students of St. John Catholic School, as well as their siblings, will continue to receive school bus transportation from the Greenwood Development until such time as the last student from that grand parented group graduates from St. John’s.

At that time, the Board will revisit school bus transportation to both schools, taking into consideration enrolment and accommodation issues at both sites. The Toronto Catholic District School Board currently provides school bus transportation from the Greenwood Development to students who attend both St. John and St. Denis Catholic Schools. This duplication of service originated during the school closure process for Corpus Christi Catholic School to enable students who had attended Corpus Christi to avail themselves of transportation to either St. Denis or St. John for the remainder of their elementary school education.

Replacement of Staff The following was approved at the May 7th Human Resources, Program and Religious Affairs Meeting:

Regarding replacement staff, the Board will leave at the discretion of the Human Resources department decisions to determine the appropriate qualifications and deployment of staff based on an on-going assessment of supply and demand data.

Staff will continue the practice of consulting with the local trustee in regards to placements and transfers prior to presenting a summary list to the Board and that the Board as a whole approve the list as presented by staff.

The Human Resources department is authorized to hire retired teachers for daily occasional teaching positions and current retired teachers on the occasional teachers’ pool will also be limited to filling daily occasional positions as well. Long Term Occasional positions (15 days or more) may be filled by non-retired occasional teachers except where exceptional circumstances warrant the use of an experienced teacher.

Staff are authorized to fill vacant vice-principal and principal positions for a maximum of four weeks with retired vice-principal and principals where to do so would minimize undue disruptions to the system as a whole and if a longer period is required, in consultation with the school Trustee, that it be brought back to the Board.

The Human Resources department will be required to report to Board, on monthly the incidence of recruitment, hiring and deployment of staffing and the breakdown thereof.

May 14, Administrative and Corporate Services Committee

Budget 2008-2009 The Toronto Catholic District School Board has approved a budget that is balanced with the exception of the $5.2 million deficit. Staff and the Chair of the Board are to work with the Minister of Education to accommodate the $5.2 million debt.

The Board of Trustees also approved that no lay off notices be sent out and the physical education PLN, 5th Block, Junior Literacy Intervention and Full Day Senior Kindergarten not be reduced. The combination of these two approvals results in an accumulated deficit of $14.0M.

Elementary teacher positions The Board of Trustees approved a motion to retain the teaching positions that would be deemed surplus based on current enrolment projections which show a decline in enrolment of approximately 1,311 students at the elementary level.

May 21, Regular Board

TCDSB moves forward with Policy changes to address Ministry of Education Recommendations The Toronto Catholic District School Board has responded to the “Enhancing Public Trust and Confidence” report prepared by Norbert Hartmann by adopting or endorsing all the recommendations outlined in the document. In addition the Board has also approved in principle the concept of an integrity commissioner as part of a new trustee code of conduct. The policy changes are to be completed by the end of June, 2008.

Mr. Hartmann was appointed following a request from TCDSB Chair LeBlanc-Miller that the Minister of Education provide some external support in addressing some discrepancies relating to trustee expenses.

No Summer Camps Offered in 2008 Due to insufficient response to a proposal to offer a summer literacy and numeracy camp to students in grades 1-6 at select sites around the City of Toronto, the Board is unable to move forward with this initiative. Originally funded through Learning Opportunities Grants, the Board had explored the concept of offering a 13-day camp program on a cost-recovery basis.

Green Project Initiatives The Board is moving forward with 14 greening, garden and revitalization projects at the following sites: St. Brigid, St. Elizabeth, St. Denis, Pope Paul VI, St. Paul, St. Joseph, St. Rose of Lima, St. Dunstan, Pope John Paul II, Holy Angels, St. Sebastian, St. Richard, St. Basil-the-Great and Holy Name. The cost for these initiatives is $634,710.

School Renewal Program The amended school renewal program 2006-2008 was approved by the Board. This includes a variety of projects including roof replacements, washroom retrofit, PA system upgrades, retrofits to walls, boiler replacements and replacement of doors and windows. The details can be found on the Board’s website at http://www.tcdsb.org/trustees/Agendas/Special%20Board,%202008-05- 21/Special%20Board%20Agenda,%202008-05-21,%20School%20Renewal%20Program%20Status%20Update.pdf

Replacement of Staff Trustees stayed the implementation of recommendations referenced in the following items pending the outcome of the collective bargaining and/or grievance procedure discussions between the TCDSB and TOTL: The Human Resources department is authorized to hire retired teachers for daily occasional teaching positions and current retired teachers on the occasional teachers’ pool will also be limited to filling daily occasional positions as well. Long Term Occasional positions (15 days or more) may be filled by non-retired occasional teachers except where exceptional circumstances warrant the use of an experienced teacher.

STUDENT RECORDS (OSRs)

Reference: Min. of Education. The Ontario Student Record (OSR). 2000.

TRANSFER OF OSRs

Principals must NOT send any OSRs to another school or board in Ontario without a written and signed request form (signature of receiving principal/ vice principal or guidance head, in the case of secondary schools) Appendix H

Elementary schools must not forward any OSRs to secondary schools in June.

Secondary schools must not request OSRs until the students are present and enrolled after September 5th.

Before an OSR is transferred to the receiving school, the principal should review the contents to ensure that only that which is “conducive to the improvement of the student’s instruction” is left in the OSR.

This means removing notes for absences and tardiness; doctor’s notes; booklets produced in kindergarten etc. Report cards and special services files remain in the folder. Check that admit and demit dates for each year, the name of the school, signature of the teacher etc. are completed on the OSR folder before it leaves custody of the elementary school. Our former students depend on our accuracy in later years – admission to English schools in Quebec etc.

NOTE: The “Record of Accumulated Instruction in French As a Second Language” card must remain in the OSR throughout elementary and secondary school and must be forwarded inside the purged OSRs sent to the Archives and Records Management Department for microfilming and permanent retention.

The most secure method for transferring all OSR Folders is by Purolator Courier. This applies to both internal and external OSR transfers,

TCDSB schools may use internal courier service for transfer of records within the Board using approved Ministry of Education mailing envelopes. However, this method leaves no written record or proof of the transaction. Purolator Courier provides documentation so that these transfers can be monitored and OSR records retrieved if lost in transit.

Principals are invited to discuss any questions they may still have with: Shaaron Grogan-Sheahan Assistant Superintendent of Education, Corporate Services 416-222-8282, ext. 2162 [email protected]

NO EARLY DISMISSAL PRIOR TO SUMMER VACATION

There will be no early dismissal of students on the last day of school prior to the summer vacation.

The Toronto Catholic District School Board has completely harmonized School bus transportation services with the Toronto District School Board. This has resulted in significant savings for the TCDSB, but has taken away some of the flexibility we previously enjoyed.

The practice of early dismissal on the last of school before summer vacation and Christmas holidays is a practice of the TCDSB, which is not implemented by the TDSB. The TDSB will not be adopting this practice. Therefore, there will be no early dismissal on the Friday before Christmas or the last day of school in June.

KEEPING COOL IN THE SUMMER? THINK GREEN!

This summer is predicted to be another hot one, which is good for our students and teachers who can enjoy it, but don’t forget that the hot summers are at a cost to our overall climate change from global warming.

You can still enjoy hot summers, however, keeping Cool doesn’t mean air conditioning. There are many Green ways to keep cool during this summer that can minimize your impact on the environment.

TIPS: 1. Open windows when home, and use blinds when out. 2. Use fans to circulate and cool the air, instead of air conditioning. 3. Plant shady trees and plants. Think about a vegetable garden to feed your family. 4. Create a water feature to cool the surroundings and reduce the stresses of the day. 5. Minimize your usage of heat producing appliances (i.e. dryer, dishwasher, stove). 6. If you do need to use an air conditioner, increase the temperature setting by a couple of degrees, and use a programmable thermostat. 7. Shift your Peak Load energy usage to the evening so that your daily energy consumption is spread out and not concentrated to the Peak times. 8. Reduce your car usage to minimize our smog days and keep the bue-skies Blue. 9. Water your grass only in the early morning 2.5cm (1 inch) per week. Try it on the weekend and incorporate a slip and slide. 10. Drink lots of fluids. When you’re cool, you don’t need lots of energy consuming machines to keep you cool.

Computers, Monitors and Lights should all be turned off when you leave a room!

Have a great summer and look out for more energy conservation tips and ideas when you come back to school in September.

What's the meaning of 'home'? A writing contest for grade 4, 5 & 6 students

From October 6 to November 14, 2008, students in grades 4, 5 and 6 can enter the Meaning of Home writing contest in support of Habitat for Humanity.

By entering, students have the chance to make a difference in their community – the winner will be part of the ultimate gift: A $60,000 contribution towards the building of a Habitat home in or near the winner’s community.

Teachers can incorporate the writing contest into their classroom activities and assignments. As you know, one of the key elements of language learning is to interact and connect with individuals. Here’s how the writing contest helps teachers meet some core requirements: • The writing contest provides students with the opportunity to produce an original piece of work that reflects their capacity for independent critical thought. • The contest is an activity that students will see as meaningful; one that challenges them to think creatively about a topic that directly impacts their lives–the meaning of home–and will ultimately improve their writing skills.

You can download a complete, ready-to-go Education Module – including a lesson plan, activity ideas, writing tips and a Habitat for Humanity fact sheet – and full contest details at www.meaningofhome.ca (French: www.sensdunchezsoi.ca) If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Kaltiainen, Corporate and Public Affairs x 864, Veritas Communications T 416.482.0864 www.veritascanada.com 370 King Street West, Suite 800, Box 46 Toronto, Ontario, M5V 1J9 Main phone number 416.482.2248 Toll free number 1.888.513.8733

Helping Change One Child's Life At A Time: Herbie Host Family Shares Their Experience Citytv, Thursday June 5, 2008 Story by Suzanne Ellis, video by Brian McKechnie

It's been nearly 20 years since Bob and Beth Kalisz had a two-year-old running around the house. The pint-sized addition to the Scarborough couple's 'family?' Shatho Batisani, who flew with her mother Boswa to Toronto from Botswana a month ago for lifesaving surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children. It's part of Operation Herbie, which helps provide critical medical treatment to children in need around the world.

The Kaliszes, whose own three children are all in their twenties, are hosting Shatho and Boswa for the duration of their four-month stay and it's obvious they adore the clever, energetic youngster. "It brings back memories of when your own children were that age," Beth tells CityNews.ca. "With a two-year-old, you have to change your house - make sure everything's up high again, put the gates on the stairs. But there's lots of fun too, and you're changing somebody's life."

Shatho isn't the first child to live with the Kaliszes through Operation Herbie. In late 2006 they hosted a four-year- old boy from Togo named Kokou Azoupko who had a growth on his face that looked like a tumour but was actually his brain growing through a hole in his skull.

In 2004, Bob, then principal of Scarborough's Prince of Peace Catholic School, met Kokou on a trip to Togo. He was there to bring food, clothing and supplies to a rural school, part of a partnership between Prince of Peace and the Togolese community. It was an experience he'll never forget. "I sat beside the village chief and they placed this little boy on my lap," Bob relates. "He had a massive growth on his face. I was pleased to see that the village didn't hide the deformity. They actually put him right on the lap of the visitor from another country and told us that nothing could be done in Africa. And there was this pie-in-the-sky idea that maybe in Toronto we could help him."

Back home, Bob spearheaded a donation drive at his school that raised more than $50,000 toward bringing Kokou to Canada through the Herbie Fund. The Togo boy underwent brain surgery and facial reconstruction, and despite a few infection-related complications it was deemed a success.

It wasn't long after Kokou had returned to Africa, that Bob and Beth were approached about bringing another Herbie child into their home - little Shatho. "It's something that you have to weigh seriously. You have to be prepared for it. You have to know that it could take a lot longer than anticipated," Bob advises. "Once we said we'd do it, we knew we'd do it until the end. It's something we'll always cherish and always remember."

As hosts, Bob and Beth not only share their home but a lot of their time. They go to all the doctors' appointments at the Hospital for Sick Children, support the parents when their children are in surgery, contact relatives back in Africa with progress reports. "It's been wonderful to share their family with us and share our family with them," Bob says. "The thing I find wonderful, as a parent, is we have older children now and they're seeing us walk the talk. You can tell your kids the things you should do to make the world a better place but if you actually do it, the actions speak a lot louder."

Shatho underwent a seven-hour operation to reconstruct her lower intestines last month, and the procedure appeared to go smoothly. As long as there are no complications, Shatho and her mom can fly home to Botswana in August, and Bob smiles when he says now he and Beth have a place to stay when they visit.

"Having been to Africa you see how much hardship is there for so many families," he notes. "To change the life of one child at a time, we're very happy to help do that."

Group gets award for running around June 5, 2008 MICHELE McLEAN www.insidetoronto.com (North York Mirror)

The Roadrunners' Club at St. Gerard Majella Catholic School got an Exemplary Practice Award from the Toronto Catholic District School Board for the program. "Students love the program," said Principal Nick Biagini. "It really has become the culture of the school." The award came with a plaque and $1,000, which Biagini said will be used to buy T-shirts, knapsacks and water bottles to keep the program going.

Each year the Catholic board acknowledges innovative programs and special projects at local schools with the award. St. Gerard Majella was one of nine winners that were honoured at a ceremony on April 22 at the Catholic Education Centre.

St. Gerard Majella Roadrunners' Club was given the award because of its focus on raising student morale, overall school spirit and student fitness levels, improving overall academic achievement and promoting leadership amongst students and teachers.

More than 80 students are members of the club and they run four times a week. "Even the Grade 1 students are participating," Biagini said, adding this is the first year he invited those students to join the program.

Biagini said the school is located in a low-income area and many parents can't afford to put their children in organized sports and the children live in high-rise buildings. "I talk to a lot of the kids," he said. "They tell me that this club is the only exercise they get."

NORTH YORK: St. Basil the Great boys soccer settles for provincial silver June 11, 2008 04:52 PM North York Mirror

A great ride for the St. Basil the Great's boys soccer team at the quad-A provincial championships in Windsor ended Wednesday, June 11 with a tightly-contested match, but one that saw the North on the short end.

In the championship final against second-seeded A. B. Lucas (London), St. Basil fell 1-0 and was forced to settle for silver.

The loss was the lone tournament blemish for the seventh-seeded team. St. Basil opened the three-day tourney with wins of 2-0 and 5-0 over Lisgar CI (Ottawa) and Father Leo Austin (Whitby), respectively. A scoreless draw with top-seeded Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Mississauga) rounded out the round-robin portion. St. Basil's then won its quarterfinal match 2-1 over St. Joseph's High School (Windsor).

Earlier in the day, St. Basil's semifinal match against fourth-seeded Cardinal Newman (Stoney Creek) was decided by penalty kicks.

Double gold medalists lead Scarborough at OFSAA track championships Aaron Brown sets new record in junior boys 100 metres June 10, 2008 NORM NELSON http://www.insidetoronto.com/Sports/Scarborough/High_School/article/49785

Scarborough athletes won their share of gold medals at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) track and field championships which wrapped up in Hamilton on the weekend. Leading the way were two double gold medal winners, both in junior boys and both from Scarborough's Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute. Aaron Brown won both the 100-metre and 200m events, proving he's the fastest high school athlete in the province at the junior boys level. His 100m time of 10.97 seconds broke the previous OFSAA record of 10.99 set in 2006 by fellow Birchmount Park teammate Ian Warner. Brown's heat time was actually faster at 10.93, a provincial junior record. Brown's 200m championship time of 22.44 seconds did not break the OFSAA competition record of 21.0 (which was set in a heat) but was fastest for a final (breaking the old mark of 22.75 seconds). Fellow Birchmount Park junior Merid Seleshi was unbeatable at the middle distances, winning the 800m and 1,500m events.

A gold-silver combo was served up by Richard West of Francis Libermann who won over 800m and finished second over 400m in senior boys.

Other gold medals were earned by: - Ian Warner of Birchmount Park in senior boys 100m; - and Andre Hamilton of Birchmount Park in senior boys 400m.

Three more gold medals were won by relay teams, including Birchmount Park which swept the boys relays, including a new OFSAA record of 41.47 seconds in the 4x100m, breaking the old mark of 41.90 set in 2006. Relay members were Ian Warner, Aaron Brown, Andre Hamilton and Christopher Griffith-Tinker.

Another gold was earned in the 4x400m by Christopher Griffith-Tinker, Mohamed Dhaqane, Ian Warner and Andre Hamilton.

Scarborough also dominated the girls relays.

Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School won gold in the senior girls 4x100m relay with team members Chantee Dardaine, Sheereen Harris, Melannie Lui and Claudine Palmer.

In senior girls 4x400m, Pope John Paul II earned bronze with runners Kim Brown, Leanne Fernandes, Ginhette Reyes and Jennifer Volcy.

Also of note, in midget girls, was Sheereen Harris of Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School who earned three silver medals - in the 100m, 200m and 80m hurdles.

Also hitting the podium with bronze medals were: - Steffi Stephenson, Birchmount Park, in senior girls discus; - Hakeem Cameron, Birchmount Park, in junior boys 400m; - Tevon Lawrence, Agincourt Collegiate, in junior boys long jump; - Dushane Farrier, Neil McNeil Catholic High School, in senior boys 100m; - Oshane Allen, Bendale Business and Technical Institute, in senior boys triple jump; - and Umar Khan, Agincourt Collegiate, in senior boys shot put. Student documentaries get new audience at Revue Cinema June 11, 2008 LISA RAINFORD http://www.insidetoronto.com/News/Villager/article/49828

Marrissa Fimpong-Mensah, a Grade 12 student at Bishop Marrocco-Thomas Merton Secondary School, hasn't had fast food in over a month; not since she appeared in her friends' documentary Take a Look about body image, about media images that create insecurities among teens. The film was a semi-finalist in the Catholic school's annual Just Docs Film Festival, which took place at a new venue this year, The Revue Cinema Tuesday afternoon. Fimpong- Mensah was caught on film while in line for a fast food breakfast earlier this year; she said in the interview that she could have made a healthier choice. Take a Look was one of the five movies chosen as finalists. They will be screened at the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) later this month. "It feels really good," said director Claudine Tran. "The reason we make these films is to get a message out and it's nice to get it out to a bigger audience." The social justice-themed documentaries by Grade 10 students are a part of Bishop Marrocco's award-winning arts program. It's a one-of-a-kind program with the purpose of bringing together social justice principles and its partner, the NFB's mandate, which is to be the conscience of Canadian citizenry. \ "I was really impressed with the quality of submissions," said Peter Hamiwka, a Revue Society Board Member, who was one of the judges. David Montemurro of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto was also invited to be a judge. He learned of the festival from one of his students who is an intern at the high school. "I think it was a great authentic opportunity for students to showcase their films. They got to choose what was relevant to them Ã?Â- that was a critical piece."

Principal Maria Pereira praised students for their efforts and recognized the success of the arts program. "You know something is working when a student asks a principal 'how do I get into this course?' It's a religion arts class. The topics are serious, they're about life," Pereira said. "Every movie has an incredible message. How wonderful to look at life from a student's perspective." The films that will go to the finals June 12, in addition to Take a Look (in the order they were screened):

- Dirty Tomato, which explores genetically modified foods.

- Facebook: Face the Truth, which explores how the phenomenon of Facebook kills relationships.

- Caught in the Middle, one boy's story about being a bully and being bullied.

- An Easy Way Out, about depression and the medication to treat it.

It is teacher Jeana McCabe's hope that audiences will be inspired to think critically after watching her students' films.

PARKDALE: Art in the Alley Walls come alive with colour as graffiti artists let loose at the Drake June 10, 2008 www.insidetoronto.com/parkdale/news/article/49753 JASON SAHLANI

Photo/JASON SAHLANI

Saturday, June 7 saw the area around the Drake Hotel turned into an open-air art gallery as 50 graffiti artists left their mark on donated space.

"It's important that Toronto embraces these graffiti artists and realize that they're part of the creative youth here, and they should be proud of that," said event organizer Janna Van Hoof.

Now in its fourth year in Parkdale, 'ReSurface' was organized by Style in Progress together with Community CAVE (Communities Advancing Valued Environments) and Toronto Police Crime Stoppers with the goal of celebrating Hip-Hop culture, including graffiti. Van Hoof said she hoped the event would help clear up any misconceptions of street artists some may have: "It might have started in gang culture, but in Toronto graffiti isn't gang related. If it was we couldn't have all these artists working together peacefully."

The Ottawa coordinator for the non-profit organization CAVE, Mike Young, was on hand to liaise with concerned residents. "We're a group that helps bring youth together with business owners and residents to build better communities," said Young. "And that shouldn't be limited to just cleaning up back alleys but painting murals and making the space valuable to everyone."

Helping out at the event was a veteran of the Parkdale graffiti scene, Angel Carrillo (a.k.a 'Cruz 1'). The 32-year-old began his career as an artist while in high school, painting murals on the walls of Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School from grade 10 to his final year as a way to get out of class, and hasn't stopped since.

Describing the situation of graffiti in Toronto, Carrillo said that "no one wants to see tags (spray-painting your name on any available space), but they want to see murals, but if you don't get access to walls, then tags are all you'll get. "When graffiti started (in Toronto) people knew it was out there, but artists were rocking in different parts of the city without a problem," said Carrillo. "But as soon as kids jumped on the wagon of street fame, and tagging for that fame, things started to get out of control, and the two (tagging and graffiti) started to be looked at as the same thing."

No stranger to the scene, School Officer for Toronto's Crime Stoppers Const. Scott Mills (referred to as 'Scott' by almost everyone there) said, "there's a small per cent of young artists who will tag today or paint out of bounds but there are a lot of other kids here trying to make sure that doesn't happen."

One of the volunteers who watched over a group of young teens painting plywood for a BMX ramp was 19-year- old Kedre Browne. Known to his friends as 'Bubblz', he offers advice and acts as a mentor to kids just starting out in the world of street art. "Mentoring just came naturally to me so I thought 'If you're going to live somewhere, or be around somewhere, why not get involved?'," said Browne. "As long as kids can get their hands on a can or a marker, they're going to do it, so I try to show them they can move from doing it illegally to more legal ventures and come at their art from a more professional and artistic approach."

A Strength-Based Approach to Assessing and Building Resiliency in High Risk Children and Youth

Featuring: Dr. Wayne Hammond Dr. Wayne Hammond is the president and executive director with Resiliency Canada in Calgary, Alberta. Over the past twenty years, he has primarily worked with high-risk youth and their families with a focus on comorbid, sexually acting out, substance abuse and violence issues as well as other related mental health concerns. He has served in clinical supervisory capacities, worked in a comprehensive residential treatment centre and has provided clinical services in an inpatient/outpatient forensic setting as well as an adolescent comorbidity program based in a hospital setting. He has published several scientific articles and has been an active lecturer with regards to various mental health concerns and the implications of strength-based practice related to working with adolescents and families as well as First Nation youth and their families.

Overview of Session The practical goal of this presentation is to introduce the participants to strength-based model of intervention practice. As opposed to the traditional model of trying to protect and fix the problems of high-risk children and youth, the presentation will highlight the concept of resiliency, a strength-based model of assessment and practice, an exploration of the role of protective factors, and outline the implications for preventative programming and evaluation. The workshop will explore how adult care providers, community care agencies and preventative programs can identify and nurture the protective factors and capacities of children and youth that allow them to cope effectively with everyday challenges, bounce back from adversity, develop realistic goals and treat themselves and others with respect.
