July 2017 Messenger Newsletter We are here to serve, not to condemn— to welcome, not to exclude—to love, not to judge. 2019 Messenger A Note from Pastor Lisa… Rev. Dr. Lisa Martin—Senior Pastor “! For the rest of us!” was a made-up holiday featured in an episode of . Frank Costanza, father of series regular, George, who decided that had become too commercial. The holiday featured a time for “airing of grievances,” an undecorated aluminum pole, and “Feats of Strength” in which everyone tried to pin the head of household to the ground. We laugh, but back in Pennsylvania the little town of Punxsutawney makes a great deal out of “” February 2. Residents and visitors wake up at 3am to grab their place on Gobbler’s Knob when at approximately 7:25am, the unsuspecting groundhog, Phil, is wrested from his burrow to tell us if spring is arriving early this year. The days surrounding this great reveal are filled with banquets, dances, craft shows, and wine tastings. We can grumble and complain that February is the dreariest, longest, most depressing month of the year. Or, we can create something out of it. Why not create a holiday in February? While Festivus and Groundhog Day are clearly secular, we could create for ourselves some holy-days – which is the root of the word holiday. Every holiday tradition we have is because someone at sometime decided that this was a good, symbolic way to bring meaning. What could we do? • season is a season that celebrates enlightenment, so we could light a candle each night at dusk and marvel how the days grow longer through the month. Read some scripture passages that speak about light. • We could use it as a season for personal reconnecting -- make a commitment to call or meet a friend that you usually talk to through texts or social media – and use each visit as a reminder to also connect with God. • We could make this a month of service. Make a commitment to do an unexpected act of kindness each day, and schedule several larger volunteer projects this month. • Celebrate the cold weather with gratitude – make a new soup each week, cuddle up with a good book, and start a gratitude journal that makes you realize your blessings in this cold, damp month. Let’s find a way put aside our desire to complain, and make February a month of holy-days. Peace, Pastor Lisa

“Out & About” Launched Last , a Travel Ministry reunion luncheon was held in St. John Hall with about 25 members attending and sharing many memories. This also marked the retirement of Lois Feager, who led this ministry for many years. At the end of the discussion and sharing, Sheila Killebrew, Bill Ward, and James Mennerick volunteered to look at a new model for exploring and fellowship. In reflection, years ago the Golden Oldies ministry was re-branded as Travel Ministry. Now Travel Ministry has been re-branded as Out & About, which is for all adults (members, non-members, and friends of St. John), not just seniors. In the coming three months the outings will be regional. On Wednesday, February 6, the first outing will be to the St. Louis Art Museum, with Dave Helling as our guide. Cost is $5 (bring day of the event). On March 12, we will visit the Magic Chef Mansion and the newly renovated Soldiers Museum. Cost is $25 (paid in advance) to the church office. On Saturday, April 13, plans are being made for a wine country tour. If you have interest in serving on this committee, please contact one of the committee members listed above. If you would like to signup for one of the trips, please RSVP to the office.

From the Rock… Rev. Rocky Sheneman

Associate Pastor Since February is , I thought I would briefly cast some Black history along side the history of the United Church of Christ and its antecedents. In 1700, Rev. Samuel Sewall, a white congregationalist minister and magistrate in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, wrote an anti-slavery pamphlet called, “The Selling of Joseph.” In 1773, Phyllis Wheatley, a member of Old South Church in Boston, gained her freedom soon after becoming the first published African-American author. Her work, Poems on Various Subjects, was well-received. In 1785 Lemuel Haynes became the first African-American ordained by a Protestant denomination. He became a well-known preacher and writer. In 1839, a group of African slaves were held in a jail after breaking their chains and seizing control of the schooner Amistad. Congregationalists and other Christians organized a comprehensive campaign to liberate the captives. The Supreme Court finally ruled that the slaves are not property. In 1846, Lewis Tappan, one of the Amistad organizers, organized the American Missionary Association, the first anti-slavery society in the U.S. with multiracial leadership. In 1959, Martin Luther King Jr. asked the UCC to intervene when southern news stations imposed a news blackout during the growing civil rights movement. Everett Parker, of the UCC Office of Communications, organized churches and won a Federal court ruling that the airwaves are public, not private property, leading to a proliferation of people of color in television studios and newsrooms. My purpose in sharing these events is not so much to fill us with pride during Black History Month but to name this an important thread in our Protestant tradition that calls us to continue the courageous pursuit of God’s justice. Confronting racism in our culture and in our own selves can be a painful task, but our liturgical tradition points us toward confession and not away from it. Perhaps Black History Month is a way that God begins a new work within us. I hope you’ll join me in finding a way to learn something new about black history and consider its impact on the present. Opportunities abound. And remember that God abounds with steadfast love and faithfulness! Blessings, Rev. Rocky Quarterly Mission Projects The Mission and Outreach committee is starting a quarterly mission opportunity for the adults at St. John. Kim Hedgpeth Director of Christian Education Too often serving in the children’s ministry can seem like a thankless job. One of the key tasks for children’s ministry leaders is to help volunteers understand their importance. From Nursery workers to Faith Quest teachers and VBS leaders, we are constantly in need of more people to assist with this important ministry. We are currently searching for VBS directors, teachers and assistants. With that in mind, I offer these following reasons why serving in the children’s ministry is important.

• God is in the children’s ministry. This may come as a shock, but the Bible has specific promises about God’s presence when children are welcomed and loved in Jesus’ name.

• The first (and sometimes lasting) feelings a person will have toward church is formed in the children’s ministry.

• When you serve in this ministry, you are being entrusted with the most important (and vulnerable) members of our church family. There is no greater treasure on this side of heaven than the little ones God has given us. You must be someone special to have a job that is so important.

• Your service is essential for your own spiritual growth. You may have never looked at it this way, but a growing Christian is always a serving Christian. Jesus was known for putting others first. When you serve in the children’s ministry you are walking in his example.

• The children’s ministry, is the first contact some young families will have with our church. Your friendly greeting and exceptional care for their children can make a great first impression for your church. So, with these indisputable facts in front of you, who is ready to commit to VBS, or Faith Quest, or Kid’s RAP, or small groups? You can make a difference. Blessings, Kim Hedgpeth

Kim Hedgpeth Director of Christian Education As I write this article today, I realize how crazy the next few weeks are going to be in the life of the Youth Ministry. Lock-ins, CYE, youth-led worships, mission trip retreats, and meetings, meetings, meetings. This hectic time of the year is exciting and full of promises for meaningful times with our youth. As we prepare for our upcoming mission trips, we have some great ways for you to support our youth. The High School Mission Trip Trivia Night is scheduled for Friday, February 22 at the Boys and Girls Club of St. Charles. So how can you support this great fundraiser? You can grab a group of eight people and register a team. You could donate or collect raffle items or gift baskets. You may want to sponsor an entire round for $100. Or maybe you want to volunteer at the event. How about donating cases of beer or soda? This is going to be an exciting night, but will take lots of dedicated people and their resources to make this happen. We need you to support us as we try to raise enough money to offset the cost of our summer trips. If trivia isn’t your thing, no worries. You can support one of our youth in the Spring Plant Sale. Starting in late February, St. John youth will begin asking you if you would like to order your spring plants from them. The sale will run into early April, and plants will be delivered to the church on Mother’s Day. Start thinking ahead to spring now and place your flower orders late this month. If neither trivia or plants is of interest to you, but you still want to help the youth program, see me or Beckie at your convenience, and we will let you know how you can support the program in other ways. Although it seems crazy now, summer will soon be here, and our kids will be ready to head off on their respective mission trips. These trips are a very important part of our kids’ faith formation. Supporting them now is a way you can make a difference. Thanks in advance for your continued support. Peace, Kim Hedgpeth What's Happening in Youth Ministry?
