For the first time in 8 years the Head of State will be facing a real rival in these general elections – failing a strong, organised opposition – in the shape of businessman Bidzina Ivanichivili, the founder of the movement, Geor- gian Dream-Democratic Georgia. The general elections on October 1st will be followed in the spring of 2013 by a presidential elec- tion, in which, according to the constitution, the present Head of State, M. Saakashvili, cannot stand after having already served two terms in office. His opponents also perceive the extension of his powers as Prime Minister, that are part of the constitutional reform approved in 2010, as a manipulation by M. Saakashvili, who they think is planning to pass from being president to the post of head of government so that he can continue to lead the country after having left the presidency. Two electoral coalitions and 21 political parties are running in the election on 1st October next.
