Genesis 3:1-6 (8/13/14)

Genesis 3:1a (NKJV) 1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made…

In Genesis 3 the serpent isn’t specifically identified as Satan—however when we look at other Scriptures they clearly point out that the serpent here is none other than Satan himself—

In Ezekiel 28:13-19 God tells us that Satan was in Eden, the Garden of God.

In 12 and 20 we see a dragon that is then identified as “that serpent of old, who is the and Satan”.

The word ‘cunning’ is a Hebrew word that means ‘intelligent, shrewd’.

This of course was not like the serpent we think of today.

What this creature looked like before the fall, how it got around, how beautiful it was we don’t know.

Did all the animals in the Garden talk or was it only this one?

1

I personally don’t think that all the animals in the Garden talked but that Eve was in such a state of innocence that when Satan spoke through this creature she didn’t get startled or become suspicious—as perhaps if a two year old’s pet or cat spoke…

Where did Satan come from?

The says that God created him and gave him the name Lucifer which means ‘shinning one’.

In Ezekiel 28:14 God tells us that at one time Lucifer was the “anointed cherub that covers” (Explain)

In Isaiah 14 God tells us that Lucifer wasn’t content to be second in rank to the Almighty—he wanted to be the Most High God—and so he led a rebellion in heaven in an attempt to overthrow God.

Revelation 12 tells us that he was able to convince a third of the angels in heaven to follow him in his revolt—they failed of course and became fallen angels.

At that time Lucifer became Satan (adversary) and the devil (accuser/slanderer).

Now you need to understand that even after the fall Lucifer still maintained his beauty as a shining one.

In he uses that beauty to his advantage as a deceiver—in 2Corinthians 11:14 Paul tells us that Satan transforms himself into an angel of light to deceive.

The word ‘angel’ simply means messenger.

2

There have been many supernatural messengers over the centuries that have come to people giving them spiritual ‘’.

These would include the angel Moroni, and many other ‘ascended masters’, ‘alien visitors’ etc. that have been Satan or sent by Satan with a ‘gospel’—these have been nothing more than sent from the devil and his demons.

2 Corinthians 11:3 (NKJV) 3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

In a sense we are all victims of Milton’s depiction of Satan as an ugly, hideous creature when in fact he is described in Scripture as a creature that was created by God “perfect in wisdom and beauty”—

So much so that when we see him for the first time Isaiah tells us we are going to say, “Is this the one who caused all the trouble?...”

So sometime before Genesis chapter 3 Lucifer sinned in heaven and fell—Jesus said, in Luke 10:18—"I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven”.

Now when Lucifer fell his authority in heaven was terminated—but he continues to maintain authority as leader of an army of fallen angelic beings that are still bent on overthrowing God.

Satan knew he couldn’t do anything to hurt God directly—so he decided to do the next best thing—hurt those whom God loved and made in His own image for the purpose of loving fellowship.

Genesis 3 is all about Satan exporting his rebellion from heaven to the earth where he set his sights on corrupting mankind and tearing them from God through sin.

3

But that wasn’t his only plan—he wanted to take from Adam and Eve, through , the world God had given to them, so that Satan could become the world’s new owner and man’s new master.

Genesis 3:1 (NKJV) 1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You [“you’ is plural down through v.5] shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?"

In John’s gospel chapter 8 Jesus referred to Satan as “the father of lies, who was a liar from the beginning”.

This was, no doubt, a reference to Genesis 3 when Satan, as the father of lies offered up the first he ever fed the human race (Adam and Eve).

The very first lie of the devil was to tell Eve that God didn’t tell her the truth.

Notice he doesn’t come right out and call God a liar—Satan is much too subtle for that.

First he tries to get Eve to doubt what God said—"Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?" (v.1)

Some of the newer translations put it this way, “Did God really say…”

Here we have the first question in the Bible posing the first dilemma in human history—there were no dilemmas before this one.

The question is carefully crafted by Satan to start Eve down the path of doubting God’s Word.

4

He knows that doubting the Word of God will inevitably lead to rejecting the will of God and then doing whatever seems right in her own eyes.

One author put it—

“And for the first time the most deadly spiritual force was covertly smuggled into the world— what was it? The assumption that what God has said is subject to human judgment.”

The attack centered on the one prohibition that God had placed on Adam and Eve—that one tree He told them they couldn’t eat from—the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

His point seems to be to try to convince Eve (and later Adam) that God is unnecessarily restrictive and narrow.

“God wants to limit your freedom and rob you of the fulfillment you deserve.”

Now, not only did that undermine the truth of God, it was a frontal assault on the character of God.

How can God be all that loving and good if He withholds from us things that are beneficial—and if so how can we really Him to control our lives?

Satan tries to get Eve to think that he cares more about her welfare than God—God, he implies, is trying to keep from her something that is good—while he, the devil, wants her to have the full freedom to do what she wants and experience what she wants.

Now at this point Eve isn’t ready to take the bait completely so she tries in a weak way to defend God—

5

Genesis 3:2-3 (NKJV) 2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 "but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.' "

Notice she tries to defend God’s Word by adding something to it—“…nor shall you touch it…”

God has severely warned us about adding to or subtraction from His Word. (Rev.22:18-19)

There have always been those who have subtracted from God’s Word the things they didn’t like or agree with.

Thomas Jefferson subtracted the miracles from the Bible because he didn’t believe in miracles.

Liberals for centuries have subtracted divine judgment from the Bible and have taught that hell isn’t a real place—because they don’t agree with those doctrines.

On the other end of the spectrum legalists have put in long lists of prohibitions under the guise of holiness.

Others have introduced works into the pages of Scripture as being necessary along with faith for salvation.

Why did Eve feel the need to add something to what God had said?

It could be at this point that Eve is starting to feel that God was being overly restrictive and so she adds “…we can’t eat from it or touch it lest we die.” (Explain)

6

At this point Satan knows he’s got her right where he wants her so he drops the subtleness and attacks God directly—

Genesis 3:4-5 (NKJV) 4 Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. 5 "For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

First Satan tells her—“You can’t trust God’s Word, He doesn’t have your best interest in mind— His way isn’t the path of true fulfillment.”

Secondly he tells her—“You won’t surely die.”

In other words, “You can do whatever you think is right, even if it goes against what God has said and there won’t be any consequences for it—no judgment!”

This is a message Satan is preaching to our world through the TV, the music, the movies and even through advertising—

“No Boundaries!”—Ford Motor Company.

“No Rules!”—Outback Steakhouse.

Or as another company admonished—“Live outside the lines!”

In other words the Satan wants people to buy into is that they can live their lives without God’s rules, His laws and there won’t be a day of reckoning coming—no consequences, no judgment!

7

And why is this a message that so resonates with people?—because the prevailing attitude in our culture is—

“No one knows what will make me happy more than me—and my personal happiness is what life is all about. And so I don’t want anyone, including God, telling me how to live my life—I want the freedom to make my choices and do whatever feels right and makes me happy.”

Now to live that way a person has got to either do away with God Himself (atheist movement) or at very least twist what He has said so that they can do whatever they think is right while making themselves feel they’re living a good life—(‘truth is not absolute it’s relative’).

Genesis 3:6 (NKJV) 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

So Eve, with the serpent’s help, became the first person on earth to doubt and deny the validity and authority of God’s Word opting instead to do what seemed right in her own eyes.

And in so doing she became a judge over God’s Word instead of allowing the Word of God to be the judge and final authority over her life and conduct.

Satan’s strategy was so effective in the Garden against mankind’s parents—that he has effectively used it against all of their children around the world ever since—

1 John 2:15-17 (NKJV) 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

8

1. “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food” (the lust of the flesh)

2. “...that it was pleasant to the eyes” (the lust of the eyes)

3. “…a tree desirable to make one wise...” (the pride of life)

Satan even used this attack on Jesus in the wilderness—

1. Stones to bread (the lust of the flesh)—Matthew 4:3

2. Jump from the pinnacle of the temple (the pride of life)—Matthew 4:5-6

3. Kingdoms of the world (the lust of the eyes)—Matthew 4:8-9

Notice that three times Satan came at Jesus with three different temptations and three times the Lord countered by saying “It is written”.

The Word of God is our weapon (Sword) against Satan’s attacks. (2Cor.10:3-4)

This is where spiritual warfare began on the earth—in the Garden in Genesis 3—and notice it started when mankind opened the door to it through rebellion against the Word of God.

And when man fell Satan took over and became the ‘god of this world’ and the ‘prince of the power of the air”, the commander and chief of an evil army which is using the earth as a base of operations from which to overthrow God, His people and His kingdom.

Now as I said earlier, when Satan exported his rebellion to the earth—the rebellion he had unsuccessfully tried to impose on heaven—remember what it was?

9

Satan wanted to be God—the same thing he now tries to get Eve to embrace—

Genesis 3:4-5 (NKJV) 4 Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

This lie that Satan told Eve was made up of 4 different false doctrines.

You can find these 4 doctrines, in part or in total, in every false , cult, occultic practice and humanistic teaching on the face of the earth.

These 4 basic doctrines that make up Satan’s lie are:

1. God is not personal but an impersonal force that fills the universe and everything and everyone in it.

When Satan came to Eve one of the things he subtly planted into her mind was the concept that the Person she had come to know as God was not God because of who He was, but was God because of what He knew—“you will be like God knowing”(v.5)

In other words He had learned how to tap into a force that made Him God and now He was trying to keep her from understanding what this ‘god force’ was because He did not want her to find the same divinity and godhood that He had found.

So here you have the first part of the lie—God is not personal but is an impersonal force that fills the universe and flows through everything and everyone in it. (Pantheism)

10

2. The second element of the lie that Satan told Eve was that there is no ultimate death.

When Satan told Eve, “You will not surely die” he was saying to her, “Eve there is no ultimate death.”

This, of course became the basis for the doctrine of Reincarnation.

3. The third element of the lie that Satan told Eve was that she could become god.

"For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God…” or in other words you can ascend to godhood.

4. The forth element of the lie that Satan told Eve was that godhood could be achieved through the tree of knowledge.

Or in other words, the path to godhood is through enlightenment which she could bring about by doing something—which in Eve’s case was to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil—

But today would include eastern meditation, visualization and other occult tools and techniques that are being used to gain ‘enlightenment’ in our culture.

The serpent said to her—

“You will not surely die for God knows that in the day that you eat the fruit of that tree your eyes will be opened—you will be enlightened and you will become like God or in other words—you will ascend to godhood.”

11

This lie that Satan planted into the human race in the Garden of Eden has been growing and spreading for thousands of years and has become a tree that has filled the whole earth with the deadly fruit of false doctrine. (This is “The Lie”—Rom.1:25 and 2Thess.2:11)

And I believe the Antichrist's religion will be rooted in the belief that mankind can become a super-race of god-beings that will live forever.

This has been the goal of Hinduism, Mormonism, the New Age Movement and many others— those who believe that we are really God and all we need is to be enlightened and then the human race will take a ‘quantum leap’ in the evolutionary process to godhood.

So the very lie that caused the human race to fall in the beginning, I believe, is going to be the ultimate deception that Satan is going to use against the human race in the end.

False doctrine, in one form or another, is nothing new it has been around since the beginning of time (Genesis 3).

But in 1Timothy 4, right on the heels of his admonition for us in the church to hold up, proclaim and defend the truth of God, Paul gives us a chilling warning—

1 Timothy 4:1 (NKJV) 1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons…

That demons have doctrines is no surprise—that’s what false and the cults are all about.

However what Paul is warning us about here is that in the last days (the time just prior to Jesus’ return) some in the church will depart from the faith (Jude 3)—although Paul isn’t saying they would necessarily depart from the church (Explain).

12

They would depart from the faith (the truth of God) and would give heed to deceiving spirits and in the process they would embrace doctrines of demons which they would “Christianize” and pass off as biblical Christianity—and we’re seeing this being fulfilled right before our eyes.

(“Christian Yoga”, Visualization, Contemplative Prayer etc.)

Many in our culture today don’t want to become God someday—they already believe they’re God because they have done away with God by saying He doesn’t exist or that ‘God is dead’.

Next week I’d like to show the movie “God is NOT Dead!”
