A centre of academic excellence and achievement, it is today academic activities of the faculty that go much beyond academic publications, all have found one of the finest institutions for Social Sciences, Humanities and Commerce, while also offering their way into this volume. Nearly six decades of consistent hard work and imaginative a B.Sc. Programme in Mathematics and Statistics. Professional Courses like Elementary engagements with higher education has been possible due to the sustained efforts of the Education, Journalism and the flagship diploma course in Conflict Transformation and Peace departments of LSR. Their history, specific pedagogical practices and their vision for the future Building are among its strengths. Located at the cutting edge of knowledge, LSR has not just kept provide a thrilling insight into this great institution. It is here that the 'magic of LSR' is created pace with the changing world but has been the pioneering spirit behind many innovations in the every day – through every single lecture and tutorial, by every single teacher and student. field of education. Established in 1956 in the capital city of India, by the late Sir Shri Ram in memory of his wife, the college had its modest beginnings in a school building in Daryaganj with 243 students, 9 faculty, 4 support staff and 3 distinct courses of study. Today, the college is located in a beautiful 15 acre campus in South Delhi, has about 2400 students, 120 faculty members, 80 administrative and support staff and 15 departments. In the early years, LSR provided a safe haven for young girls from conservative families who would otherwise be denied quality higher education. Today young women, flock to the college from not just every part of India but from several other neighbouring countries too. LSR has established its reputation as a training ground for women achievers who have broken the glass ceiling in different areas of endeavour. One of the most important strengths of the college is the faculty which is known for its professionalism and commitment. The emphasis is on innovative pedagogic practices which encourage students to think critically. The college fosters a spirit of academic excellence, informed by humanism and a celebration of diversity and inclusivity. The vision is to empower young women to be leaders and change agents who are at the same time sensitive to social issues and problems. LSR perceives the real challenge to be that of infusing in students a sensibility that can differentiate between just making a career and having a vocation. Preparing the Department Profiles has made it abundantly clear that it is the classroom and the time spent by the teachers with their students that is the heart and soul of undergraduate education. While LSR is divided into fifteen departments, it has become rather evident that these boundaries are of limited significance. Being primarily devoted to humanities and social sciences, the pursuit here is to gain an understanding of the multifaceted and deeply interconnected nature of the society that we live in. This necessitates that the departments in LSR be ever cognisant of these subtle and integral linkages. This volume of Department Profiles attempts to celebrate and record the calibre of the fifteen departments of LSR.     Hon'ble Ms. Justice Gita Mittal

    Hon’ble Ms. Justice Gita Mittal Justice Gita Mittal was born on 9th December, 1958 to parents who were in academics. An alumna of the Lady Irwin Higher Secondary School [Science batch of 1975], Lady Shri Ram College For Women [BA (Eco. Hons.) 1978] and the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University [(LL.B) 1981], she was appointed as an Additional Judge of Delhi High Court on 16th July, 2004. Prior to her appointment as Additional Judge, she had an illustrious legal practice in all courts and other judicial forums since 1981. Justice Mittal was confirmed as a permanent judge on the 20th of February, 2006. As a judge, she has presided over several jurisdictions including heading a Division Bench hearing criminal appeals involving life and death sentence references; matters of the Armed Forces; Cooperative Societies; Criminal Contempt References; Criminal Appeals; Death References; Company Appeals; Writ Petitions and Letters Patent Appeals relating to the Armed Forces. She currently presides over a Division Bench hearing writ petitions arising out of orders of the Central Administrative Tribunal and other service matters. Since August, 2008, Justice Gita Mittal has been a member of the Governing Council of the National Law University, Delhi. She is also a member of the Governing Council of the Indian Law Institute, New Delhi since 2013 and has been nominated to its Administrative Committee. Justice Mittal is presently chairing the court committees on the Delhi High Court’s Mediation and Conciliation Centre as well as the committee monitoring the Implementation of Judicial Guidelines for Dealing with Cases of Sexual Offences and Child Witnesses.

    Was the Emergence of the International Gold Standard Expected?Melodramatic Evidence from Indian Government Securities M. Flandreau and K. Oosterlinck The emergence of the gold standard has for a long time been viewed as inevitable. Fluctuations of the gold-silver exchange rate in world markets were accused to lead to brutal and unsustainable switches of bimetallic countries’ money supplies. However, more recent work has shown that the option character of bimetallism provided a stabilizing feedback loop. Using original data, this paper provides support to the new view. Using quotation prices for Indian Government bonds, we analyze agents’ expectations between 1860 and 1890. The intuition is that the spread between gold and silver bonds issued by the same entity (India) and backed by a credible agent (Britain) is a “pure” measure of the silver risk. The analysis shows that up until 1874 markets were expecting bimetallism to last. It is only after this date that markets gradually started requiring a premium to hold silver bonds indicating their belief that gold would eventually become the only metallic standard.     Lalit Modi was born in a wealthy and successful business family. His father Krishan Kumar Modi is Chairman of Modi Enterprises, a Rs.40 billion business empire which was founded by his grandfather, Raj Bahadur Gujarmal Modi [8] (Founder of town Modinagar ). He attended boarding schools like Bishop Cotton School in Shimla and others in Nainital . He disliked school, and often ran away. After his schooling, he was determined to continue with his studies in the United States . He scored well in the SAT and chose to skip the school-leaving examinations, which were required for entrance to colleges and universities in India.
