Candace Milburn (Veterans History Project) created a preliminary inventory of moving images in 2011. Candace Milburn and Amy Maxwell (AFC intern) transcribed sound recording container spine information to create an early version of the audio inventory in 2011-2012. Moving images were inventoried by Adam Schutzman (AFC intern), with guidance from Marlan Green (Conservation Division), in 2017. Biographical Note Bruce Jackson, born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in New Jersey, has lived most of his life in Buffalo, New York, but traveled around the U.S. to do field work. Together with Diane Christian he created five film documentaries, and has co-hosted the Buffalo Film Seminar series since its inception in 2000. He is SUNY Distinguished Professor and James Agee Professor of American Culture at University of Buffalo, and in addition to film documentaries he is also widely published, and has staged numerous photography exhibits. Diane Christian was born in Brooklyn and raised in Rochester, New York. After nearly eight years as a nun with the Sisters of Saint Joseph (in Buffalo), she left for a career in higher education. Christian began teaching at the University at Buffalo in 1969, and met Bruce Jackson the following year. They married in 1973, and over the course of their 50 years together have built a working partnership that has yielded not only five film documentaries, but also co-hosting duties for the Buffalo Film Seminar series, as well as other professional collaborations. She has published both poetry and non-fiction, and continues to teach in the Department of English at University of Buffalo, where she is SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor. Scope and Content Documentation of fieldwork conducted by Bruce Jackson in prisons in Indiana, Missouri, and Texas; recordings at concerts and festivals including the Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965, 1967-1968; interviews conducted at various events including Resurrection City, 1968; interviews with and performances by various blues artists, folk artists, and others including poets and literary figures, 1961-1980s; production footage for film documentaries on various topics by Bruce Jackson and Diane Christian. Bruce Jackson and Diane Christian collection 4 Description of Series Container Series Series 1: Manuscript Materials Series 2: Sound Recordings Information about the sound recordings is derived from sound recording containers, accompanying documentation, and communications with Bruce Jackson. Titles are a compilation of basic details from tape containers, primarily tape box spines. Recognizable abbreviations are silently expanded. The processor added information that appears in brackets, usually the better-known title of a song or a performer, etc. Question marks indicate information that has not been transcribed (when in brackets) or when the transcription is conjecture. Not all of the information from the tape boxes has been transcribed. Digital images of the containers are available on request. The containers for SR0087 and SR0934 arrived at AFC empty, and each was assigned an ID number in error. The list of projects minimally processed so far reflects only the contents of this collection, and is not exhaustive. Bruce Jackson and Diane Christian have collaborated on the following films: Death Row, Robert Creeley: Willy's Reading, William August May, Out of Order, Creeley, and Robert Creeley: The Persistence of Verse (a conversation between Robert Creeley and Bruce Jackson, 2001). Both directed, edited, and produced these films. Jackson did the cinematography and Christian recorded the sound. Running times for all films are approximate.     Diana Davies Photograph Collection Finding Aid Collection summary Prepared by Stephanie Smith, Joyce Capper, Jillian Foley, and Meaghan McCarthy 2004-2005. Creator: Diana Davies Title: The Diana Davies Photograph Collection Extent: 8 binders containing contact sheets, slides, and prints; 7 boxes (8.5”x10.75”x2.5”) of 35 mm negatives; 2 binders of 35 mm and 120 format negatives; and 1 box of 11 oversize prints. Abstract: Original photographs, negatives, and color slides taken by Diana Davies. Date span: 1963-present. Bulk dates: Newport Folk Festival, 1963-1969, 1987, 1992; Philadelphia Folk Festival, 1967-1968, 1987. Provenance The Smithsonian Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections acquired portions of the Diana Davies Photograph Collection in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Ms. Davies photographed for the Festival of American Folklife. More materials came to the Archives circa 1989 or 1990. Archivist Stephanie Smith visited her in 1998 and 2004, and brought back additional materials which Ms. Davies wanted to donate to the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives. In a letter dated 12 March 2002, Ms. Davies gave full discretion to the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage to grant permission for both internal and external use of her photographs, with the proviso that her work be credited “photo by Diana Davies.” Restrictions Permission for the duplication or publication of items in the Diana Davies Photograph Collection must be obtained from the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections. Consult the archivists for further information. Scope and Content Note The Davies photographs already held by the Rinzler Archives have been supplemented by two more recent donations (1998 and 2004) of additional photographs (contact sheets, prints, and slides) of the Newport Folk Festival, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Poor People's March on Washington, the Civil Rights Movement, the Georgia Sea Islands, and miscellaneous personalities of the American folk revival.

She has been curator emeritus at the Smithsonian since 1993. Reagon also enjoyed a distinguished career as a professor of history at American University from 1993 to 2002. Reagon was interviewed by The HistoryMakers® on November 21, 2003 and September 22, 2003, in Washington, District of Columbia. Biographical Note by The HistoryMakers® Born on October 4, 1942, Bernice Johnson Reagon grew up in Albany, Georgia, where she became involved in the civil rights movement. As a student at Albany State College in 1961, Reagon was arrested for participating in a SNCC demonstration. She spent the night in jail singing songs and after her arrest joined the SNCC Freedom Singers to use music as a tool for civic action. Reagon earned the SNCC Freedom Singers to use music as a tool for civic action. Reagon earned her B.A. in history from Spelman College in 1970.

    th nd 19 November to 22 December UKDHM 2018 will focus on Disability and Music. We want to explore the links between the experience of disablement in a world where the barriers faced by people with impairments can be overwhelming. Yet the creative impulse, urge for self expression and the need to connect to our fellow human beings often ‘trumps’ the oppression we as disabled people have faced, do face and will face in the future. Each culture and sub-culture creates identity and defines itself by its music. ‘Music is the language of the soul. To express ourselves we have to be vibrating, radiating human beings!’ Alasdair Fraser. Born in Salford in 1952, polio survivor Alan Holdsworth goes by the stage name ‘Johnny Crescendo’. His music addresses civil rights, disability pride and social injustices, making him a crucial voice of the movement and one of the best-loved performers on the disability arts circuit. In 1990 and 1992, Alan co- organised Block Telethon, a high-profile media and community campaign which culminated in the demise of the televised fundraiser. His albums included Easy Money, Pride and Not Dead Yet, all of which celebrate disabled identity and critique disabling barriers and attitudes.
