Ironically profes- sional football plays no part in its construction or maintenance. Sun Devil Stadium in Phoe- nix, AZ., is the sole responsibility of Arizo- na State University (ASU) in Tempe. The fact that this stadium has become one of the most recognized in college football and may one day serve a professional football team is purely the result of the foresight of individuals in the athletic and physical plant departments at the university. There is no minor league in football. Those athletes whose desire in life is to be profes- sional football players have just one way to get there, by going to school and demon- strating their prowess on the gridirons at colleges and universities in small towns and cities across the U.S. These fields are the stage where football careers begin for some and end for others. They are the proving grounds and training facilities for a multi- billion dollar industry. But they are also a tremendous source of national recognition for American colleges and universities, a factor that attracts students and endowments to campuses. When Sun Devil Stadium was built in 1959, television was still in its infancy and national recognition for college teams was hard to gain. ASU trustees at the time wer- en't thinking about television revenues or professional football. Their primary concern was providing a football facility in which stu- dent athletes could compete successfully with other colleges in the Western Athletic Conference.

    For Immediate Release: December 5, 2013 Contact: Al Carbone (203) 671-4421 - Follow us on Twitter @WalterCampFF Duke’s David Cutcliffe Named Walter Camp 2013 Coach of the Year NEW HAVEN, CT – David Cutcliffe, head coach of the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division champion Duke University Blue Devils, has been named the Walter Camp 2013 Coach of the Year. The Walter Camp Coach of the Year is selected by the nation’s 125 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors. Cutcliffe is the first Duke coach to receive the award, and the first honoree from the ACC since 2001 (Ralph Friedgen, Maryland). Under Cutcliffe’s direction, the 20th-ranked Blue Devils have set a school record with 10 victories and earned their first-ever berth in the Dr. Pepper ACC Championship Game. Duke clinched the Coastal Division title and championship game berth with a 27-25 victory over in-state rival North Carolina on November 30. Duke (10-2, 6-2 in the Coastal Division) will face top-ranked Florida State (12-0) on Saturday, December 7 in Charlotte, N.C. The Blue Devils enter the game with an eight-game winning streak – the program’s longest since 1941. In addition, the Blue Devils cracked the BCS standings for the first time this season, and were a perfect 4-0 in the month of November (after going 1-19 in the month from 2008 to 2012). Cutcliffe was hired as Duke’s 21st coach on December 15, 2007. Last season, he led the high- scoring Blue Devils to a school record 410 points (31.5 points per game) and a berth in the Belk Bowl – the program’s first bowl appearance since 1994.

Cities across the cotintry compete for the right to host this prestigious event. The reputation of such an occasion has caused an increase in demand and price for tickets, making attendance nearly impossible for the average fan. As a result, the National Football League has implemented free events for local residents and out-of-town visitors. This, along with broadcasting the game, creates an inclusive environment for all fans, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of professional sports. This paper explores the growth of the Super Bowl from a novelty game to one of the country' s most popular professional sporting events.     PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn SEATTLE SEAHAWKS Team History When the Seattle Seahawks took the field for the first time in the 1976 season, it marked the culmination of a quest for a National Football League franchise that had its roots in the Pacific Northwest metropolis as early as 1957. That is when discussion first began about the possibilities of constructing a domed stadium that would assure a major league sports franchise for the city. On June 4, 1974, the NFL awarded its 28th franchise to Seattle to play in the 64,984-seat Kingdome. A civic suggestion campaign netted 20,365 entries and 1,741 different names, but “Seahawks” was selected and announced on June 17, 1975. Just a little more than two months later, after a 27-day sale, the season ticket campaign was shut off with 59,000 tickets sold. On January 3, 1976, Jack Patera, who had been a Minnesota assistant coach, was named the team’s first head coach. The Seahawks finished 2-12 in 1976, when they played in the NFC, and 5-9 in 1977, when they moved into the AFC. The Seahawks had winning 9-7 records in both 1978 and 1979 and Patera was named NFL Coach of the Year the second year. The strike-shortened 1982 season proved to be a transitional year for all of pro football, but no club fit the transitional description better than the Seahawks. Patera was removed after six-plus years as head coach. Mike McCormack finished the season as interim head coach and then was replaced in 1983 by Chuck Knox, who guided the Seahawks to an 83-67-0 record in nine seasons up through the 1991 campaign.

Part of Day’s self-belief was reassured late last August when his mentor, UCLA head coach Chip Kelly, shot him a text message amid the news. As controversy swirled in Columbus with Meyer’s three-game suspension for the mismanagement of former wide receivers coach Zach Smith, Kelly’s sentiments to Day were simple. “He says, ‘You’re built for this,'” Day said Aug. 28. “That’s what he told me. And that’s the thing I keep going to every morning when I wake up is that I’m built for this.” Kelly was right. After he led OSU to its 3-0 start with wins over Oregon State (77-31, Sept. 1), Rutgers (52-3, Sept. 8) and then-No. 15 TCU (40-28, Sept. 15), his explosive offense finished second in college football (535.6 total yards per game) as the program went 13-1 overall with Big Ten and Rose Bowl titles. Day succeeded Meyer, who announced his retirement Dec. 4 and transitioned to assistant athletics director of athletics initiatives and relations, as he took over Jan. 2 and kept the machine running. “It’s not that he won an interview,” Kelly told USA TODAY’s George Schroeder. “It’s that his day-to-day work over the two-year span that he was there gave them confidence that he would be able to take on that role.
