Career Pathways at LCC LCC is in its third year of a five-year, $500,000 grant from College Spark to implement Guided Pathways, a national student success initiative. The goal is to increase the number of students earning college credentials that lead to productive employment. Because helping each new student enter the right pathway is critical, Guided Pathways colleges are required to identify clusters of programs that have similar career trajectories. We conducted focus groups with around 200 students, who helped us name our clusters. They also encouraged us to call them “Career Pathways.”

4 2020 Annual Report College Success Fund

A Catalyst for Excellence in Education & Innovation

The College Success Fund allows LCC to capitalize on emergent needs and opportunities as they arise to better serve our students and community. Your contribution to College Success has been a catalyst for advancing many of our educational programs through investment and innovation such as STEM education and workforce training. This fund continues to enhance our ability to provide quality instruction in our classrooms and labs while preparing students for future success. Navigator Outreach Program

The College Success Fund supports: Thanks to generous grant support from n Academic programs the Community Foundation of Southwest Washington, LCC started a Navigator Outreach n Staff and faculty grants Program in early 2020. The purpose of the n Innovative learning opportunities program is to provide personalized support for high school seniors in developing their n New instructional equipment and technology post-graduation plans, including applying n Veterans’ support services for financial aid to attend college. n Student support programs This is important to the region’s economy. That’s saying something, n Areas of greatest need considering that Washington ranks 47th in terms of completion of the Free Application Since its inception, thanks to your support, the College Success for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Fund has provided $200,000 in LCC Foundation Grants to staff and Our first Navigator, Jodi Rogers, is assigned faculty to enhance programs through equipment, staff and faculty to Kelso High School (KHS), a frequent LCC development, student support, and community engagement. collaborator. Although Jodi started just a few weeks before the COVID-19 lockdown began in March 2020, the program’s impact is already evident. At the time of this writing, Kelso is leading Cowlitz County substantially in the proportion of high school seniors completing FAFSA applications, an important first step toward obtaining a college degree. Another early indication of success is the proportion of 2020 KHS graduates who enrolled at LCC by fall quarter. Between this year and last, the rate increased from 21% to 23%. Given that many families are delaying college-going decisions due to the pandemic, Kelso’s results are very encouraging. Providing a Navigator to every high school in LCC’s service district could lead to dramatic increases in the number of people going to college, whether or not they choose LCC. To date, we have not identified a funding source to expand the pilot program.

2020 Annual Report 9 Navigating through the Pandemic

On January 21, 2020, the first U.S. case of a novel coronavirus known as COVID-19 was confirmed in the state of Washington. On March 23, Governor Jay Inslee issued a “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order requiring immediate closure of non-essential businesses and sending most workers home. When the order was issued, LCC was in the midst of final exams. Some were shifted online, and many were cancelled altogether. The massive switch to working remotely came just days after LCC’s conversion to a new computer system called ctcLink, without a doubt the biggest overall change to the college in decades. The new system required every student and employee to activate a new account and learn new ways to perform most transactions. Along with ctcLink support, the rest of the college’s programs and services also quickly pivoted to a remote environment. The start of spring quarter was delayed by two weeks to April 20 to give faculty more time to move their classes online. Meanwhile, LCC’s emergency operations team convened daily to monitor the situation, provide guidance, and develop safety plans for the gradual resumption of activity. On May 5, programs deemed essential by the state, including machine trades, medical assisting, nursing, and welding, were allowed to resume limited in-person instruction following established physical distancing and other mandatory protocols. An important safety measure was the addition of health monitors at the entrance to every instructional building. Health monitors ensure that only students in enrolled classes enter, check that people are wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and take temperatures. Other measures such as the installation of plexiglass barriers were also taken. Throughout spring quarter, infection rates continued to spike in the state and local community. LCC made the decision to hold its first-ever virtual commencement ceremony on June 19, and it was determined that instruction would remain predominantly online for summer and fall quarters. A few essential areas partially reopened to students, and as the weather grew colder, a “Drop-In Wi-Fi Hot Spot” opened in the Student Center. Officials made the call to continue online instruction in winter quarter. In November, infection rates took a turn for the worse. New statewide restrictions were issued, and it was announced that LCC would continue primarily online instruction in spring quarter. Carefully laid plans for campus-owned student housing and athletics were revised yet again to reflect the constantly evolving situation. As the pandemic rages on, LCC’s strengths— including well-developed emergency preparedness plans and faculty commitment to quality online learning—will continue to provide stability and direction amid a sea of uncertainty.
