Bauhinia variegata Botanical name: Bauhinia variegata Common name: Bogakatra, Koliar Morphological characters: Bauhinia variegata is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree with a short bole and spreading crown, attaining a height of up to 15 m and diameter of 50 cm. In dry forests, the size is much smaller. The bark is light brownish grey, smooth to slightly fissured and scaly. Inner bark is pinkish, fibrous and bitter. The twigs are slender, zigzag; when young, light green, slightly hairy, and angled, becoming brownish grey. Leaves have minute stipules 1-2 mm, early caducous; petiole puberulous to glabrous, 3-4 cm; lamina broadly ovate to circular, often broader than long, 6- 16 cm diameter; 11-13 nerved; tips of lobes broadly rounded, base cordate; upper surface glabrous, lower glaucous but glabrous when fully grown. Flower clusters (racemes) are unbranched at ends of twigs. The few flowers have short, stout stalks and a stalklike, green, narrow basal tube (hypanthium). The light green, fairly hairy calyx forms a pointed 5-angled bud and splits open on 1 side, remaining attached; petals 5, slightly unequal, wavy margined and narrowed to the base; 5 curved stamens; very slender, stalked, curved pistil, with narrow, green, 1-celled ovary, style and dotlike stigma. Growing season and type: 1. In its natural habitat in India, the tree is deciduous, remaining leafless from Jan-Feb to April with leaf fall in Nov-Dec. 2. Flowering occurs when the plant is leafless. 3. Tree starts flowering at a very early age of 2-3 years. 4. The seeds disperse from the pods and germinate on sites with favourable light and moisture conditions, while in unfavourable niches the radicle dries up or is destroyed by birds. -

Evidently, three genera, namely, Dipterocarpus Gaert. f., Hopea Roxb. and Shorea Roxb. of the Dipterocarpaceae are described from the Neogene sediments of western India (Rajasthan and Gujarat). These taxa are marked by their complete absence in the region today. The presence of Dipterocarpaceae in western India has been noticed from the Early Eocene up to the Plio- Pleistocene in deep time. The family is usually a dominant component of the humid tropical and subtropical flora of the Indo-Malayan region and its discovery, along with earlier described fossils from western India indicates existence of ancient tropical rain forests in western India. A change in the climate affected warm and humid conditions occurring there during the Cenozoic resulting in arid to semi-arid climate at present which is responsible for the ultimate extinction of Dipterocarpaceae in the region. In addition, the palaeobiogeography of Dipterocarpaceae is reviewed. 1. Introduction understorey. Alpha taxonomy and diversity measures based on taxon counting are the most commonly used tools for understanding long-term evolutionary patterns and provide the foundation for all other biological studies above the organismal level. However, this provides insight into only a single dimension of a multidimensional system. As a complement, ecomorphology allows us to describe the diversification and evolution of organisms in terms of their morphology and ecological role. This is accomplished by using quantitative and semi-quantitative characterization of features of organisms that are important, for example, in niche partitioning or resource utilization. In this context, diversity is commonly referred to as disparity (Foote, 1993). The process of speciation, for example, can be better understood and hypotheses more rigorously tested, if it can be quantitatively demonstrated whether a new species looks very similar to the original taxon or whether its morphology has changed in a specific direction. For example, if a new species of herbivore evolves with increased grinding area in the cheek dentition, it can either occupy the same area of morphospace as previously existing species, suggesting increased resource competition, or it can occupy an area of morphospace that had previously been empty, suggesting evolution into a new niche. -

3.4 ORDER CARNIVORA Bowdich, 1821 3.4.1 Family Ursidae Fischer, 1817 There are eight species of bears in the world: - American Black Bear Ursus americanus - Brown Bear Ursus arctos - Polar Bear Ursus maritimus - Sloth Bear Melursus ursinus - Spectacled Bear Tremarctos ornatus - Giant Panda Ailuropoda melanoleuca - Asiatic Black Bear Ursus thibetanus - Malayan Sun Bear Helarctos malayanus The last two species are the only members of the family Ursidae known in Southeast Asia. They differ from each other by their furs and body sizes and both are threatened with extinction (Nowak, 1991; Corbet & Hill 1992). Bears have relatively undeveloped carnassial teeth; narrow premolars, crushing molars with flat crowns and large robust canines. 127 3.4.1.1 Subfamily Ursinae Fischer, 1817, Plate 3(A1 to B3) As mentioned above, two genera and two species represent the subfamily Ursinae in Southeast Asia, namely: - Malayan Sun Bear (Figure 3.8, A), Ursus/Helarctos malayanus (Raffles, 1821) with the scientific name Ursu and synonym Helarctos is distributed in the south west of China, Assam, Myanmar, Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia, to the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. It is the smallest of all bears found in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. - Asiatic Black Bear (Figure 3.8, B), Ursus thibetanus Cuvier, 1823 is mainly localized in the Himalayas, Afghanistan to southern China, Myanmar, northern Thailand and Indochina. It has several alternative names including Asiatic Black Bear, Himalayan Black Bear, Moon Bear and inhabits mountain forests. A quick summary of a twelve day search for mammals in North and Central Thailand guided by Rattapon Kaichid ( known as Tu ) who together with his wife Jan runs Nature Focus Thailand, they can be very highly recommended. Many thanks to Jon Hall for their email contact which is [email protected] Tu is a really nice guy to ƚƌĂǀĞůǁŝƚŚ͕ŚĞ͛ƐĂŶĞdžĐĞůůĞŶƚĂůů-round wildlife guide and his connections help smooth the way in many of the national parks. Based on our target species, Tu and Jan put together the following itinerary: x Three days ʹ Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuary x Three days - Khao Yai national park x Four days ʹ Kaeng Krachan national park x One day ʹ Salt pans for Spoon-billed sandpiper x One day ʹ Ban Tha Kham bay for Irawaddy dolphin and Finless porpoise This was quite easy going, giving us a fair bit of time in each of the main centres. I think we did very well scoring 43 species with good views of most of these although we had no luck with any of the mega mammals such as Clouded leopard, Marbled cat, Golden cat or Sun bear which are all possibles and seen from time to time. A couple of weeks before our visit a group had seen a Golden cat catching a dove in front of one of the bird blinds. A Sun bear had been seen crossing the road one morning near the top of the mountain at Kaeng Krachan and a group that arrived there at the same time as us went on to see a Binturong an hour or so later.
