UP Beta Sigma Fraternity

PROFILE: UP DILIMAN RESIDENT BRODS

Beta Sigma continues to be one of largest fraternities in membership in the Diliman cam- pus. Together with the residents in UP Los Banos, there is a total of 84 resident broth- ers enrolled, making the fraternity the largest in membership in the university system today.

This significant rise in membership is no mean feat. With the declining popularity of fraternities not only in UP but in the rest of the country, our brothers have sustained their recruitment push.

The number of brods is increasing, and the quality of recruits has been maintained in a high level. In a welcome turnaround, about 40% of the brods in Diliman are studying in tech- nology-oriented courses such as engineering, computer science, architecture, mathemat- ics and statistics. At least 5 are in the sciences such as chemistry, geology and archaeology.

There is also a growing number of brods in a relatively new UP institution - the National College for Public Administration and Governance. They may be our future public service leaders. The College of Music and Institute of Library and Information Science, once bastions of recruitment, continue to produce steady membership for the fraternity. There is a sprinkling of recruits in mass communica- tions, human kinetics and education. Unfortunately, there is none from the business and economics courses and law to complete a well-balanced roster.

Looking at their non-academic interests reminds alumni brods of their kind. Many are into martial arts, including the latest-trend mixed martial arts. Their sports interests include basketball (of course), ten- nis, track and field, and present craze airsoft combat. Many are musicians (as always), playing trumpet, oboe, bass guitar, and piano. Some are content to be hooked on computer gaming and web designs, interests that can produce a future given the digital age. Poker? Yes, they have substituted our “pusoy”.

The Diliman brods has Miguel Gerard Alo as their Grand Grincep for the second straight year. He is the son of Gerard Alo, UP Diliman Batch ’72 and one of four sons of Gerard to enter the fraternity.

His term ends at the end of February when the residents elect a new GP. A climax to Miguel’s reign, “Malmon Cup 2009” will be held in early February which is an intra-fraternity Olym- pics. Up for grabs are championships in basketball, Quiz Bee and the top event – SOMA.

The UPBSFAAI will push the residents to increase their number to at least 50 per cam- pus for the incoming school year and commits total support for this massive effort. ART
