Ringen der frühen Kirche mit der „Gnosis“, die heidnisch-mystische Elemente mit dem 90-179 Christentum vermischen (u.a.: Valentin; Marcion) Eine Sondergruppe stellt der Montanismus dar, der enthusiastisch-ekstatische Elemente mit strengem Moralismus zu verbinden suchte. Tertullian schloss sich ihnen an. Diese Kämpfe führten aber auch zu einer inneren Festigung und Konsolidierung der frühen Kirche, insbesondere mit der Feststellung der neutestamentlichen Kanons (z.B. um 180 Kanon Muratori), um 200 wird auch das Taufbekenntnis als „regula fidei“ bezeugt. Mit dieser inneren Konsolidierung beginnt aber gleichzeitig auch ein Abweichen von der christlichen Kirche der Apostelzeit: a) die Rechtfertigung allein aus Gnaden, allein um Christi willen, allein durch den Glauben tritt immer mehr in den Hintergrund, das christliche Leben, die christliche Moral wird maßgeblich (siehe Didache); Schriften der „apostolischen Väter“, dann der „Apologeten“, neben dem Gesetz dringt die Philosophie in die Kirche ein; b) schon Clemens von Rom behauptet 95, dass der Episkopat nach göttlichem Recht die Leitung der Abendmahlsfeier habe, Ignatius von Antiochien 115, dass er eine göttliche Ordnung sei; es entstehen Bischofs- oder Priestersynoden. 190/191 beansprucht Bischof Viktor I. von Rom in der Frage des Passahzeitpunktes, dass die ganze Kirche Rom folgen müsste; 217/221 bezieht Bischof Kalixt I. von Rom Matth. 16,18 auf den römischen Bischof, Beginn des Papstgedankens, wogegen Tertullian und Origenes polemisieren. Um 250 muss die Kirche mit den Novatianern kämpfen, die behaupteten, nach der Taufe und Wiedergeburt könne es keine Buße mehr geben; nach 311 mit den Donatisten, die behaupteten, das die Gültigkeit und Kraft der Gnadenmittel von denen abhängige, die sie austeilten Umfassender waren die trinitarisch-christologischen Streitigkeiten, bei denen es letztlich um das Überleben der Kirche als christlicher Kirche ging: im modalistischen Streit ging es darum, dass in der Trinität tatsächlich drei Personen, nicht nur Erscheinungsweisen, Gottes sind; im arianischen Streit (Athanasius verteidigte die biblische Lehre) darum, dass Jesus Christus von Ewigkeit her wahrer Gott ist, nicht nur Mensch oder ein von Gott adoptierter Mensch; im nestorianischen Streit ging es um die Person Christi, nämlich dass seit der Empfängnis Marias sie zwei Naturen hat, wahrer Gott und wahrer Mensch zugleich, aber diese beiden Naturen nicht einfach nebeneinander stehen, auch nicht vermischt werden, sondern in Gemeinschaft sind und darum Maria nicht nur einen Menschen, sondern auch Gott geboren hat (Gottesgebärerin) 311/324 Das Christentum wird durch Kaiser Konstantin zur Staatsreligion erhoben. Der Sonntag wird gesetzlicher Feiertag. 325/381 Konzil in Nizäa und später in Konstantinopel, Nizänisches Glaubensbekenntnis, beendet den arianischen Streit; 431 Konzil zu Ephesus und 451 zu Chalcedon, beenden den nestorianischen Streit, es bilden sich aber Sonderkirchen. Das nizänische Konzil beschließt die Gleichstellung der Patriarchen von Alexandrien, Antiochien, Jerusalem und Rom. 350-1000 Christianisierung der Germanen (u.a. Wulfila † 383, Bonifatius † 754, Karl der Große † 814); bereits in den römischen Provinzen Unter- und Obergermanien gibt es germanische Christen; christliche Gefangene, die auf den Raubzügen der germanischen Stämme (Westgoten) mitgenommen wurden, brachten das Christentum zu den germanischen Völkern, die durch die Völkerwanderung mit dem Christentum in Kontakt kamen. Die Ostgermanen (Ost- und Westgoten vor allem) wurden zunächst Arianer; Wulfila übersetzte die Bibel ins Westgotische. Die frühen christlichen Goten trennten sich aufgrund einer Verfolgung 348 vom Hauptstamm und blieben als „Kleingoten“ in der Gegend des heutigen Sofia und haben von dort aus systematisch die germanischen Stämme des Donauraums, bis zu den Alemannen, Bayern und Thüringern missioniert, vor allem aber die Wandalen, Gepiden, Heruler, Rugier, Langobarden, Burgunder; Bildung von stammesmäßigen Nationalkirchen. Die Franken wurden unter Chlodwig als erster germanischer Stamm 497 nicht erst arianisch, sondern gleich lateinisch oder katholisch-christlich und schuf so die Möglichkeit, den germanischen und romanischen Volksteil in der einen Kirche zu verbinden. Die fränkische Kirche hat stark staatskirchliches Gepräge, vom germanischen „Eigenkirchenrecht“ herkommend. Die Mission unter den Angelsachsen ging zunächst von iro-schottischen Mönchen aus, später, seit der Synode von Whitby 664, ist die Kirche römisch. Ober- und Mitteldeutschland hatte christliche Gemeinden aus der Römerzeit und durch die Germanenmission der Kleingoten; vollendet wurde die Arbeit aber durch die iro- schottischen Mönche, die als Missionare kamen, und die fränkische Reichskirche. Organisiert wurde die Kirche dann durch den Angelsachsen Wilfried-Bonifatius, als römische Bischofs- und fränkische Reichskirche seit 741. Die Sachsen wurden durch die Franken missioniert zur Zeit Karls des Großen, verbunden allerdings mit blutigen Kriegen. Nordeuropa ist von England und Deutschland aus missioniert worden. 354-430 Kirchenvater Augustin, starke Verbindung von Christentum und Antike; zugleich in Auseinandersetzung mit Pelagius wichtige Akzente setzend: Gott ist in der Bekehrung der allein Handelnde; allerdings lehrt er eine eingegossene Gnade und eine doppelte Prädestination oder Erwählung; die katholische Kirche hat Augustins Lehre abgeschwächt, indem sie ein Zusammenwirken zwischen Gott und Mensch beim Zustandekommen des Heils behauptet. Augustin kannte noch kein Papsttum. 440-461 Leo I, Bischof von Rom: volle Ausprägung der Papstidee als „Nachfolger Petri“, mit Schlüsselgewalt, höchstem Richteramt über die Christenheit, oberster Verwaltung der Kirche, höchstem Lehramt; dagegen erklärt das Konzil von Chalcedon 451, dass die Bischöfe von Rom und Konstantinopel gleichrangig seien. Ende des Weströmischen Reiches mit der Eroberung Roms durch den Germanenkönig 476 Odoakar 492-496 Gelasius I., Bischof von Rom: „Zwei-Gewalten-Theorie“ mit „Ehrenvorrang“ der geistlichen Gewalt; ca. 500: Consititutum Silvestri (Fälschung): „Die höchste cathedra darf von niemandem gerichtet werden.“ 590-604 Gregor I., Bischof von Rom, zentralisiert den Kirchenbesitz und gründet damit faktisch den „Kirchenstaat“, der bis 1870 besteht; der römische Bischof sieht sich nach dem Zerbrechen des Römischen Reiches als Symbol der Einheit; als Gegensatz zu den Germanen wurde das lateinisch-römische Element betont, was schließlich auch dazu führte, dass die Volkssprache nicht mehr, wie sonst üblich, im Gottesdienst verwendet wurde. 756 wird der Kirchenstaat durch Schenkungen des Frankenkönigs Pippin erweitert und versucht, ihn durch die gefälschte donatio Constantini zu legalisieren, bis dahin, dass der römische Bischof damit kaiserliche Rechte im Abendland beanspruchte, noch verstärkt durch eine weitere Fälschung, die pseudo-isidorischen Dekretalen 847/852, die kirchliche Allgewalt für den römischen Bischof als Universalepiskopat fordern; diese Entwicklung wurde durch die mönchische cluniazensische Reformbewegung im 10. und 11. Jahrhundert entgegen der eigentlichen Absicht vollendet (Gregor VII 1073-1085; Investiturstreit; Ziel: die Welt als Gottesstaat; das Decretum Gratiani fixiert diese Vorstellungen ca. 1140 kirchenrechtlich, Thomas von Aquin behauptet dann im 13. Jahrhundert: Es ist heilsnotwendig, dem römischen Bischof untertan zu sein (eindeutig gegen Apg. 4,12, das Heil allein in Christus, gerichtet). 610/622/630 Mohammed bildet, aufgrund Visionen, den „Islam“ aus, der zwar Elemente des Juden- und den Christentums aufnimmt, aber zugleich schroff gegen die „Religionen des Buches“ gerichtet ist und ein eigenes Buch, den Koran, geschaffen hat. Der Islam kennt keine Trennung von Kirche und Staat und ist keine Religion im eigentlichen Sinne, sondern eine Weltanschauung mit Gesetzen; Autoritäten neben dem Koran: die Hadithe (Geschichte des Lebens Mohammeds) und die Tradition; Scharia als Gesetzbuch. Zunächst Eroberung der arabischen Halbinsel, dann Angriff gegen Byzanz und Persien und Eroberung des Vorderen Orients, dann Nordafrikas, 711 Übergang nach Spanien und Vernichtung des Westgotenreiches bis auf Reste in Asturien; Angriff auf das Frankenreich schließlich abgewendet durch die Schlachten von Tours und Poitiers durch Karl Martell. Die christlichen Kirchen haben nach kurzem Aufblühen in den islamischen Staaten einen furchtbaren Niedergang erlebt; das hängt zusammen u.a. mit der rechtlichen Stellung als Bürger minderen Rechts, den furchtbaren finanziellen Lasten, denen die Christen ausgesetzt waren, dem Verbot jeglicher Mission unter Muslimen und der geistlichen Schwäche der meisten dieser
