General Characteristics of the District 1.1 Location & Geographical Area. BUXAR district was formed on 17th March, 1991. Prior to that it was a subdivision of Bhojpur district. It is the gateway of U.P. It is situated on river Ganga. It has got fertile soil and abundant water suitable for agriculture. It is situated at the west end of Bihar and bounded by Ganga river in the north and Rohtas District in the South and Gajipur (U.P.) in the west & Bhojpur District in the east. It is situated around 100 KM from Patna and 90 KM from Varanasi. It is situated at 25033’38” Latitude and 83058’50” longitude. The geographical area of district is 1623.83 sq.km and the total population is 1551493. The density of population is 955 sq.km per person. 1.2 Topography Buxar district has got almost plain area which is suitable for agriculture. There are one big river ganga and other small river Chausa, which are helpful for irrigation in the agriculture. Total population of 1551493 in the district the literate population is 754309 around 50% people are engaged in cultivating and total number of industries 1448 upto 2010-11. 1.3 Availability of Minerals. District has no substantial deposit of minerals of commercial value 1.4 FOREST District has no substantial deposit of minerals of commercial value 1.5 Administrative set up. Buxar district has got two subdivision namely Sadar and Dumraon. 11 no. of blocks, 11 no of circles, 142 no. of Panchayat,1134 no. of villages and 02 number of municipalities. 3 2. In Bihar (India), about 16 districts have been reported to be affected with arsenic poisoning. In the present study, Tilak Rai Ka Hatta village, a flood plain Diara region of river Ganga in Buxar district was targeted for the ground water arsenic assessment and health related problems assessments among the village population. Altogether, 120 water samples were randomly collected for arsenic estimation and their results were statistically analysed. While for assessment of health related problems in the village people, 120 biological samples (blood) were collected from the same households. The study showed high contamination of arsenic in the ground water as three fourth region of the entire village had arsenic levels more than 100 ppb. The typical symptoms of hyperkeratosis in the palm and sole, melanosis of the skin in the village people were highly prevalent.

AFZAL HUSAIN CENTRE OF ADVANCED STUDY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH 202002 (INDIA) 2008 ABSTRACT In the present Work we have studied the relation of the hereditary chiefs of Bihar with the,. Mughal Imperial authority. The hereditary chiefs were all over Northern India and were known as Zamindar, Kalantaran, buzurg and Marzabans and in the region of Bihar were generally called as Rajas. They played quite an important role in consolidating the Mughal conquest in India. Modem historians such as Moreland, P. Saran, Nurul Hasan and Irfan Habib have discussed in details about their power and position in the Mughal empire. Several others important works on zamindars have also been published in learned journals. Ahsan Raza Khan in particular has made a detailed study of the zamindars of Akbar's reign but so far no detailed study of the zamindars of the suba of Bihar of the Mughal period had been attempted. Therefore in the present work a humble attempt is made to study the relation of the zamindars of Bihar with the Mughal Administration. In the course of study we are able to identify a number of chieftaincies, prominent among them were Kharakpur Raj, the Ujjainias of Bhojpur, the cheros of Palamau, the Kokhra chieftaincy, the Gidhaur chieftaincy, the Darbhanga Raj, the Seor, the Panchet, etc. Some of these chieftaincies were very large having a group of parganas under their sway while others were so small that they held only a part of the pargana.

The large scale shift in the water resource allocation from surface water to groundwater in India exposed millions of people to the arsenic through groundwater. Arsenic induced toxicity in human blood cells has been evident from the several cases like Megaloblastic Dyserythropoietic Anemia, Pancytopenia. The present study is aims to know about the toxic effect of arsenic on human health by exploring blood arsenic concentration, some free radical assessment [Malondialdehyde (MDA), Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx)] and hematological parameters (RBC, Hb, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC and WBC) evaluation. The subjects belong from our recently explored arsenic hit area of Bihar. The result reveals maximum blood arsenic concentration as 706.1 μg/L while the mean blood arsenic concentration was 83.04 ± 10.60 μg/L in adult male and 70.47 ± 18.49 μg/L in adult female which was calculated corresponding to 228.105 ± 18.942 μg/L mean arsenic concentration in their drinking water.
