Cyrus Chestnut pays tribute to the jazz icon with an evening of his music and memories in the new Pollock Center in Camp Hill, PA.. A VIP Meet the Artist reception will be held following the concert's video presentation and performance. Please join us in this tribute! . This performance is underwritten by Tom & Donna Weik in memory of Tom's father, Wilbur Z. Weik.

CPFJ proudly announces a special concert in tribute to the memory of one of America's jazz icons - Dave Brubeck. The pianist and composer who helped make jazz popular again in the 1950s and ’60s with recordings like “Time Out,” the first jazz album to sell a million copies, and “Take Five,” the still instantly recognizable hit single that was that album’s centerpiece, died in December, 2012, one day before his 92nd birthday. In his long career he became best known for his famous Quartet that featured drummer Joe Morello, bassist Eugene Wright, and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond. . CPFJ is thrilled to have our featured performer Cyrus Chestnut arranging a full evening of Brubeck's music for his Trio & he will bring special guest alto saxophonist Sharel Cassity to help relive the original Brubeck Quartet sound. Bassist Eric Wheeler and drummer Evan Sherman round out this stellar group. Video segments of the original Brubeck Quartet from rare European performances will also be shown. . Cyrus began his musical career at the age of six, playing in church in Baltimore, MD. While in Maryland he studied at the Peabody Conservatory and later went to Boston to get his degree in Composition from Berklee College of Music. He has since been a major force on the international jazz scene having toured and performed with a wide range or artists including Bette Midler, , Chick Corea, Isaac Hayes, , Betty Carter & opera star Kathleen Battle. He has been a frequent performer for CPFJ and was an educator/artist at our 2012 & 2013 Jazz camps.

Saxophonist/flutist Sharel Cassity, an Oklahoma native, made the transition to New York city with a full scholarship to Julliard in 2005 - she graduated with her MA in Jazz Studies. She has been featured in the big bands of , Roy Hargrove & the DIVA Big Band and smaller jazz groups led by Wycliffe Gordon and Ingrid Jensen. Sharel appeared in the Downbeat Magazine's Critics' Poll category for "Rising Star, Alto Saxophone" during 2010 & 2011 and her first CD as a leader, "Relentless" (Jazz Legacy Productions) received a four star review in Downbeat. Recently, Sharel has had the honor of being inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and is working on her second release with Jazz Legacy Productions. . We are also excited to host this performance in the new Grace Milliman Pollock Performing Arts Center - 340 North 21st Street, Camp Hill, PA 17011 - a facility that is part of the Camp Hill School district conveniently located just off the Hwy 15 Bypass. . Tom Weik, a long time CPFJ Corporate Member, suggested having this event and he and his wife Donna are underwriting the concert in memory of his father, Wilbur Z. Weik, who introduced Tom to jazz when he was a boy. . We will host a V.I.P. Meet the Artist reception following the concert - tickets are available from our web site - www.friendsofjazz.org or by phone 717-540-1010. A special note to our Sponsor Members: this concert is included in the Fall Series and you will receive two tickets in the mail for the performance. If you wish to attend the meet the artist reception following the program, you must order separate reception tickets in advance (by September 25th) - reception tickets for Sponsor Members are $15 each. . Please join us in celebrating the life and career of this American original. 4 CPFJ 2013 FALL CONCERT SERIES CONTINUES CHRISTIAN HOWES Southern Exposure On Sunday, October 13 at 3:00 pm at The Allen Theater in Annville, CPFJ proudly presents Christian Howes and his group - Southern Exposure. Jazz violinist Christian Howes grew up in Columbus, Ohio, where he studied classically from the age of five, performing as a soloist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra at age 16 and later receiving his bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Ohio State University. At age twenty, a “cultural intervention” occurred when Christian had the opportunity to perform at regular gospel church services and it became his mission to become a violinist with a strong voice in jazz. Since his shift 21 years ago, he has gained great notoriety from critics and players alike as one of the world's most respected jazz violinists. Christian was a favorite of the late guitar legend Les Paul, with whom he worked for 11 years. An in-demand violinist on the New York scene, He collaborates with a bevy of top shelf jazz artists, including Greg Osby, Frank Vignola, Dafnis Prieto, Dave Samuels, Spyro Gyra, and a 4-year chair in Bill Evans' “Soulgrass” band. In 2013, he was voted among the top three violinists in JazzTimes' 2012 Expanded Critics Poll. In August 2011, Christian was ranked as the #1 “Rising Star” violinist in the Downbeat Critics Poll and was a nominee for the Jazz Journalists Association's “Violinist Of The Year” in 2011. In 2012, he received the Residency Partnership from Chamber Music America for his work in outreach with orchestraleducation programs. He regularly tours throughout Asia, Europe, and the U.S. as a leader of his own groups and a soloist with orchestras. Says All About Jazz, ”as a jazz violinist he has no peer.” The Minneapolis Tribune called Christian “ arguably the most intriguing young violinist in jazz.” We are happy to be back at the Allen Theatre for this performance. Food and drink are available in their M.J.’s Coffeehouse during and after the performance. We will host a Jam Session following the concert in M.J.’s and all aspiring jazz musicians are welcome to sit in - this is a regular site for CPFJ Jam Sessions from September through May. Tickets are available now at our web site or with the order form in this issue of The ViBE. See you there!!

FREDDY COLE QUARTET On Sunday, November 10 at 3:00PM IN The Ware Center, Lancaster, CPFJ is proud to welcome The Freddy Cole Quartet, featuring Freddy Cole piano/vocals, Elias Bailey - bass, Curtis Boyd - drums, Randy Napoleon guitar. Living jazz legend Lionel Frederick Cole was born in 1931, the youngest of Edward and Paulina Nancy Cole’s five children. His three elder brothers - Eddie, Ike and Nat (twelve years Freddy’s senior) - were all musicians. Freddy began playing and singing in clubs as a teenager. Although he was ready to hit the road at 18, his mother intervened and he continued his musical education at the Roosevelt Institute in Chicago. Freddy moved to New York in 1951, where he studied at Julliard and found himself profoundly influenced by John Lewis, and . It was back in New York that Freddy successfully laid the groundwork for a career that continues to flourish to this day. He developed a vast repertoire of songs in Manhattan bistros and concurrently began to supplement his live performances with television and radio commercial jingle work. Freddy recorded several albums for European and English companies during the 1970s that helped him develop a loyal overseas following. He developed a stand-up act, a better rapport with audiences, and learned to sing in other languages. He plays piano and sings and performs live with guitar, drums and upright bass. He has emerged from the awesome shadow cast by his elder brother, . In truth, his phrasing is far closer to that of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday than that of his brother and his timing swings a little more. His vocals – suave, elegant, formidable, and articulate – are among the most respected in jazz. Cole’s career continues to ascend as he has moved into the front ranks of America’s homegrown art form with a style and musical sophistication all his own. . All tickets for this event (except sponsor, life, and corporate member tickets) may be purchased from the Ware Center’s Box office - (717) 871-2308 - or their website - www.millersville.edu/ware-center/

We honor their contributions to the music, send condolences to their families, and will miss them all....

Marian McPartland 1918-2013

Marian McPartland, jazz pianist and long time host of NPR's Piano Jazz has died at age 95 at her home in Port Washington, NY. After beginning her career in British music halls, Marian McPartland came to the United States and became a most unexpected jazz star. She forged a distinctive style on piano, made scores of albums and composed music that was recorded by superstars. But her greatest contribution to jazz came later in life, through her illuminating interviews and impromptu performances with musicians on her long-running NPR program, “Piano Jazz.” She was 61 when the first “Piano Jazz” episode, with pianist Billy Taylor, aired in 1979. By the time she stepped away from the series in 2011, Ms. McPartland had won a Peabody Award for broadcasting and a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement. She also helped a generation learn about jazz through her searching interviews, conducted in her dulcet-toned, sometimes irreverent, British-accented voice. “Marian McPartland has done more for jazz pianists than anyone in the entire world,” jazz impresario George Wein said in 1991. Marian performed a concert for the Friends of Jazz in the 1980's and appeared in Central PA at Music at Gretna and at HACC’s Rose Lehrman Auditorium. She was married to jazz musician Jimmy McPartland who died in 1991.

Cedar Walton 1934-2013

Cedar Walton, a pianist and composer who worked with almost every major jazz performer of his era, from to to , and who was honored as a National Endowment for the Arts jazz master, died August 19 at his home in Brooklyn at the age of 79. For more than 50 years, pianist and composer Walton was one of the most respected figures in jazz. He appeared on more than 400 albums — including 60 as a leader — but somehow Mr. Walton remained something of an overlooked master, acknowledged by people in the jazz world but little known to the wider public. He was perhaps best known for his work with Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers in the early 60's. During that time he composed some of their best known tunes..."Mosaic", "Bolivia" and "Mode for Joe". Called “one of the best pianists and composers” for the last half-century , Mr. Walton was named a Jazz Master in 2010 by the National Endowment for the Arts. Central PA jazz fans were fortunate to have many opportunities to see Mr. Walton in the area over the years - he preformed five concert for CPFJ, the last in 2010. Cedar Waltonis survived by his wife, Martha.

Albert Murray 1916-2013

Alabama born, Albert L. Murray was an African-American literary and jazz critic, novelist, photographer, essayist, poet, and biographer. Murray conceived the idea of Jazz at Lincoln Center and was co-founder of that institution with Wynton Marsalis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a Tuskegee Airman, retiring with the rank of Major in 1962. After leaving the service, he began writing in earnest and his book “The Omni-Americans” received critical acclaim. He was the co-author of Count Basie’s autobiography “Good Morning Blues” and was well known among jazz masters. In 2005, Murray wrote the foreword to the Central PA Friends of Jazz 25th Anniversary Book - “ To A Harmony With Our Souls” - concluding that, “for over 25 years the Central PA Friends of Jazz has been one of the major jazz organizations in the United States. By continuing their work, they help preserve the highest and best qualities of American culture. This book illustrates how a small community can make a meaningful contribution to the art and the artist through persistence and dedication.” He visited Harrisburg and our concerts five times from 1988 to 1993 and served on a Festival panel discussing the contributions of jazz and blues in American culture. Murray became a member of the CPFJ Hall of Fame at our Central PA Jazz Festival in 1992. His novels “”Stomping the Blues (his scholarly, stylish narrative of jazz music), “”The Hero and the Blues, and “” South to a Very Old Place are recommended reading and his influence on the careers and thinking of American writers and critics Stanley Crouch, James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison and many others is undeniable. We are honored to have known him. Writer Charles P. Pierce said in his Esquire blog this week, “Somewhere in the Hereafter, there's an argument brewing, and a fine silver saxophone begins to play...” 8 CPFJ WILL HAVE A TENT AT THE DAUPHIN CO. 9 9 The 2013 Central PA Jazz Festival - In Review

From "Jazzin' on the Pride" to the last note of a stellar Jam Session at Gullifty's, this year's Jazz Festival was a tribute to our local and regional jazz talent. Our Central PA Youth All-Star Band kicked off the Festival at Strawberry Square on Thursday at noon. Led by the inimitable Ron Waters, the kids entertained the lunch crowd and performed a program of jazz standards.

Later that night, a large crowd gathered on the Pride of the Susquehanna to hear Dave Stahl on , along with Tom Strohman (reeds), Wayne Fox (piano), Lew Leabman (drums) and Rob Cochran (bass). A few boaters also dropped anchor close by to listen to the swinging sounds. The weather co- operated, and our "cruisers" were treated to a stellar evening of jazz.

Friday night, the JazzWalk attracted hundreds of jazz fans to downtown Harrisburg and environs. Steve Rudolph, Jonathan Ragonese and Peter Paulsen headlined The Bar at the Hilton to a standing room crowd and, as usual, blew everyone away - literally! Katie Rudolph and her CPFJ Youth Band at Strawberry Square Trio complimented the excellent food at Bricco with their smooth sounds. Burnie Stevenson covered Happy Hour at Carley's with music and song. Kevin Hurst on sax and Hasid Stevenson on guitar serenaded the diners at Crawdaddy's uptown. MoMo's BBQ served up the Chris Dean Band for some hot blues. Thanks to all the restaurants who participated.

Saturday dawned sunny and warm...a perfect day for a picnic. For the first time, CPFJ used the Carousel Pavilion at City Island...a great venue for a Jazz Picnic. As usual, our Youth Band opened the program with a JazzWalk at the Hilton Harrisburg set of great tunes. Fred Griggs, a member of the Youth Band for several years, was awarded our annual scholarship to further his studies at Manhattan School of Music. The Scott Nelson Group followed with a set of tunes perfect for a summer afternoon, including a great cover of "Take Five". The Dave Stahl Big Band closed the program with two sets of unbelievable music that sent the crowd away happy!..

The Festival's final day opened with the traditional Jazz Brunch at the Hilton, where Steve Rudolph and Cathy Chemi provided diners with a lovely interlude. Later in the day, Philadelphia drum protégée Justin Faulkner charmed a crowd of dedicated jazz fans with his sincere explanation of his craft and his philosophy of jazz. Justin then headlined the Jazz Jam Session with St. Clair Simmons (trb/voc), Barry Long (trpt), Jonathan Ragonese (sax) Steve Rudolph, Micah Jones (b), and a cast of local musicians of all ages including Andy & Nicole Roberts, Klye Whale, Sean Reeser, Hadyn Deiner, Tony Grigonis, Pete Lazorcik, Fred Griggs, Bruce Peters, Kelly Delaveris and more. Dave Santana, Andy Alonzo and Scott Nelson at the Picnic It was a great evening of improv that rivaled the raging storm outside Gullifty's that night.

Our sincere thanks to... Leslie Beamer and the dedicated and hard-working group of volunteers without whom this Festival could not have happened...Bob Pugliese and Premier Wealth Management for the underwriting that brought DaveD. Ware Stahl to the Picnic...Dauphin County for their grant to assist with Festival marketing...our JazzWalk participating restaurants.... and all of the fans who keep supporting us through the years. . We look forward to seeing you at the 34th Central PA Jazz Festival in 2014.
