BETTER TALK NOW, taken in hand early and positioned three wide, remained near the inside until the final quarter, came out seven wide for the drive and couldn't reach the winner as clearly second best. ENGLISH CHANNEL tracked the pace from early on while four or five wide, inched to a slight advantage in the upper stretch, then weakened in the late going. RUSH BAY tracked front-running ICY ATLANTIC from the outset three or four wide, took over soon after going a mile, made the pace into the upper stretch and faltered. SCORPION (IRE), well placed near the inside from the outset, battled forwardly two or three wide into the upper stretch and couldn't keep pace. HURRICANE RUN (IRE) settled between foes three or four wide early, moved inside after a half, came out again to race four wide on the final turn, swung eight wide into the stretch but lacked a closing account. GO DEPUTY, forwardly positioned early, raced within easy striking distance while between foes entering the far turn and lacked a closing account. T. H. APPROVAL, unhurried early and near the inside, made a mild move on the far turn while remaining inside and failed to continue. SILVERFOOT settled three wide, was outrun to the lane, came out seven wide for the drive and passed tired foes. CACIQUE (IRE) followed the leaders in a striking position five wide, remained a factor to the head of the stretch and tired. ICY ATLANTIC stepped right to the front and quickly opened a clear advantage along the inside, showed the way for a bit more than a mile, surrendered the advantage to RUSH BAY, faded soon after and wasn't abused in the drive. Velazquez, John R. (HOF 2012): Born: November 24, 1971. From: Carolina, Puerto Rico. Began his riding career when he entered jockey school in Puerto Rico in June 1988 and was riding in his native country a year and a half later. His first winner came at El Comandante in 1990. Launched his New York career in March 1990 under the guidance of retired Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero Jr., who works as his agent to this day. Has 4 Triple Crown races: In 2007, won the Belmont Stakes (and his first Triple Crown race) on Rags to Riches. In 2011, won his first Kentucky Derby-G1, riding Animal Kingdom; he picked up the mount the day before the race when early Derby favorite Uncle Mo was scratched because of illness. Uncle Mo was Velazquez’ third Derby mount to scratch close to the race; he was the regular rider for Quality Road and Eskendereya, who were both scratched a week before the Kentucky Derby, in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Won his third Triple Crown race on Union Rags in the Belmont in 2012. He replaced Julien Leparoux, who had ridden Union Rags in the Kentucky Derby. In 2017 he won his second Kentucky Derby (and first with longtime friend and colleague, Todd Pletcher) on Always Dreaming. In 2009, was awarded the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, an honor granted by his peers. The Woolf Award goes to a rider whose careers and personal character earn esteem for the individual and the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing.

  • Bridging the Gap: Curlin=S Turf Frontier
FRIDAY, 15 FEBRUARY 2019 BLUE ON POINT AT MEYDAN BRIDGING THE GAP: By Kelsey Riley = Last year=s G1 King=s Stand S. winner Blue Point (Shamardal) CURLIN S TURF FRONTIER towered above his G2 Meydan Sprint rivals on paper, and he ran to form on Thursday to win eased down by five lengths on seasonal debut. The 5-year-old will now target the G1 Al Quoz Sprint on Mar. 30. He was scratched behind the gate of that contest last year as the favourite after blood was discovered in his nostrils. Rerouted to Hong Kong=s G1 Chairman=s Sprint Prize over six furlongs a month later, the >TDN Rising Star= trailed home last of nine but he looked much more like himself back to five furlongs in the King=s Stand in June, winning by 1 3/4 lengths from the highly regarded Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Back up to six for the July Cup, he was beaten 4 3/4 lengths in seventh and was 2 1/4 lengths off the near dead heat of Alpha Delphini (GB) (Captain Gerrard {Ire}) and Mabs Cross (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) when third when last seen in the G1 Nunthorpe S. in August. Sitting back in third on Thursday as Faatinah (Aus) (Nicconi Curlin has been chosen as the first mate {Aus})Bhis closest-rated rival and the winner of a handicap over for Lady Aurelia | Sarah Andrew this track and trip on Jan. 3Bset the pace, Blue Point responded when given a shake of the reins by William Buick at the 300- meter mark.
