IMPACT

Our impact has local and global reach. We empower people at home and abroad with the tools and resources to lead meaningful change for children who need our help.

JustWorld currently supports partner organizations in Cambodia, Guatemala, Honduras and the United States. JustWorld conducts a thorough vetting and evaluation process to ensure that supported programs are both effective and efficient. Relationships with organization leaders, site visits, quarterly reporting and virtual meetings ensure accountability so that JustWorld-funded programs continue to transform young lives for many years to come.

7 JUSTWORLD PILLARS OF SUPPORT

EDUCATION Low educational attainment leads to greater barriers to earning potential and employment later in life as well as increased rates of adverse health outcomes. Approximately half of the population in Cambodia, Honduras, and Guatemala does not complete primary education or enroll in secondary school. Public education in the communities where JustWorld works is free; however, students cannot attend if they cannot afford their uniforms, books, school supplies, or additional expenses such as study fees. These financial challenges, along with the loss of income if a child attends school instead of working, results in high dropout rates. These factors coupled with the lack of trained teachers, inadequate learning materials, oversized classes and poor sanitation facilities make learning difficult for many students.

JustWorld removes the financial barriers for children and their families to give them the opportunity to study with qualified teachers, develop their skills, and create more opportunities for themselves in the future.

• JustWorld helped fund the building of a new school to keep more children off the streets and in classrooms for longer hours. With the expanded infrastructure, new classrooms were added as well as computer technology.

• JustWorld helped educate 6,500+ students.

• JustWorld provided salaries for teachers at partner schools in Cambodia and Guatemala.

• JustWorld funded educational staff to provide literacy programs through the mobile library, community libraries, and schools in Honduras and the United States. 8 NUTRITION AND HEALTH & HYGIENE Malnutrition is the number one risk factor driving death and disability in Cambodia, Guatemala, and Honduras. To prevent health disparities for the vulnerable children JustWorld serves, hot, nutritious meals and snacks are provided to the students. For some of these children, it is the only sustenance they may receive. The most vulnerable children come from impoverished areas that lack access to clean water, sanitation services and basic LEADERSHIP preventative measures. JustWorld supports safe hygiene and sanitation practices, and AND public health education, as well as access to basic health services. CULTURAL

CAMBODIA PEOPLE IMPROVEMENT ORGANIZATION PARTNER SINCE 2004 650 STUDENTS SUPPORTED

Phymean Noun, Founder and Director of People Improvement Organization (PIO) in Cambodia, has made education a possibility for countless impoverished children living in a municipal garbage dump. The average child in Cambodia only receives five years of schooling. JustWorld currently funds the operational costs for children Kindergarten-Grade 6. This funding provides qualified teachers, educational materials, daily lunches, and rice allotments for families as an incentive to keep their children in school. Nutrition is a vital component of the program as 32% of children under five are stunted in Cambodia.

2017-2018 HIGHLIGHTS

• All Grade 6 students passed their high school entrance exams.

• More than 6,000 workbooks and textbooks were purchased, ensuring students are prepared to attend school.

• More than 161,000 nutritious meals were served at PIO’s schools.

• JustWorld continues to fund the monthly distribution of rice to families to encourage them to send their children to school. Families received more than 85,000 pounds of rice.

“JustWorld has impacted the children of Phnom Penh immensely by making education a reality. From the continued support from JustWorld, the graduation rate at PIO has reached 100%, outperforming many state schools. Hundreds of children are now passing national exams, excelling in English, and entering high school and university or obtaining jobs.”

“What started as an idea to open up my home as a community center is now leading to more opportunities that would not have been possible without the help of JustWorld. Los Patojos is transforming not only the children of Guatemala, but entire families as well. As we expanded this year, we are able to provide powerful tools for future leaders to learn skills necessary to graduate, attend university and obtain careers.”

JUAN PABLO ROMERO FUENTES, FOUNDER OF LOS PATOJOS

More than 70% of Guatemala’s population is under the age of 40 and most of the difficulties obtaining jobs are due to a lack of education. Juan Pablo Romero Fuentes developed Los Patojos in order to prevent youth from engaging in at-risk behaviors, including gang involvement, drug dealing and illegal activities that continue to plague a country recovering from a civil war. His goal is to create more opportunities for youth so they do not have to cross the border in search of work.

Los Patojos offers hope and opportunity for the entire community of Jocotenango, Guatemala. JustWorld has helped build and fund an accredited educational institution for hundreds of students in Pre- Kindergarten-Grade 9, including daily nutritious meals, arts programs and the doctor’s salary. At Los Patojos, students can study, develop valuable skills, and learn how to start their own businesses. New job opportunities will arise as a result, strengthening the community and the country.

2017-2018 HIGHLIGHTS

• This year, for the first time, Grade 9 was offered, extending the level of support to vulnerable teenagers at higher risk of teenage pregnancy, gang involvement and other illicit activities.

• Guatemala has the fourth highest rate of chronic malnutrition in the world. With JustWorld funding, the Los Patojos nutrition program has grown from serving a single slice of bread and a cup of milk per day to daily, hot, balanced meals. JustWorld provided more than 47,000 meals, ensuring students received the nutrients they needed to prevent health disparities related to malnutrition. With better nutrition comes fewer illnesses among the students and greater academic progress.

• JustWorld funded the municipal water supply which provides clean water for WC’s, showers, and cooking, ensuring proper sanitation practices and preventing diseases related to contaminated water.

12 UNITED STATES STORYBOOK TREASURES PARTNER SINCE 2018 100 STUDENTS SUPPORTED

The StoryBook Treasures supplemental reading program is designed to close the achievement gap between culturally, linguistically and economically deprived students and their peers. StoryBook Treasures is the first domestic partnership for JustWorld. The program was implemented at Pioneer Park Elementary School in Belle Glade, Florida. Belle Glade is a South Florida town with crippling unemployment, widespread poverty and persistent violence.

Nationally, two-thirds of students who cannot read by the fourth grade end up incarcerated or on welfare, and are four times more likely to drop out of school. StoryBook Treasures is designed to help children make vital comprehensive reading connections to literature while building a classroom and personal home library collection of books.

To reach this goal, JustWorld will take the success of the first domestic pilot program and expand the program to Grades K-3. JustWorld will also continue to expand its corporate donor base, contributions from foundations, and major gift programs in order to fund the growth of the JustWorld programs around the world.

We thank you for your support and look forward to continuing to create change together for children globally.
