End of Year Prize Giving Date: The junior & senior prize giving ceremonies will be held on Wednesday 12 December. Jillian Gallagher - Principal. School Chess Teams Results: Last Sunday, 26th August, we entered 3 teams into the North Canterbury Junior School Chess Tournament. The teams consisted of: • West Eyreton Wild Cats: Emma H (captain), Angus F, Baxter B and Cooper K. They came 9th. • West Eyreton Warriors: Joshua H (captain), Matthew B, Alex F and Ethan B. They came 6th equal. • West Eyreton Wizards: William B (captain), Jacob H, Zephryn H and Oliver K. They took out the entire competition - taking the trophy from the Leithfield Legends. Congratulations to William who won every single game, and won the most valuable player for the 3rd year in a row. Written by the West Eyreton Wizards School News: E Awards: The E focus for Weeks 5 & 6 has been Empathy – “Use classroom and playground equipment respectfully.” The Whakatauki for Empathy is “ Mannaaki Whenua, Mannaaki Tangata, Haere Whakamua” – Care for the land, Care for the people, Go forward. This week’s assembly is being held tomorrow 31st August at the new time 2.15p.m. in the school hall. The Year 7 & 8 Events leadership team will be running this assembly with Ropu Kea sharing their learning. Pupils who will be receiving E awards at tomorrow’s assembly are: Ropu Kotare: Leilani S & Grace W Ropu Ruru: Hanna B, Charlotte G, Magni W & Jolene B/V Ropu Kereru: Sophie H, Finn T, Daniel H & Georgina W Ropu Kea: William W, Bradley S, Dana F & Sophie M Ropu Karearea: Pieter J, Harry D, Zoe S & Josh H We encourage our families, parents & caregivers to attend our full school assemblies. The new E focus for Weeks 7 & 8 is Example - “Being a positive example to others through our effort, behaviour and attitude.” The Whakatauki for Example is “Ehara taku toa I te toa takitahi” – My strength is not the strength of one, it is the strength of many.” Congratulations: To Shaun for being selected into a North Canterbury hockey team (Yrs 7 & 8). They have a tournament down in Timaru in two weeks time and another one in Cromwell later on in the year. We wish the team all the very best at these tournaments. Thank you for your support of this fundraiser for school. Eyre Cluster Sports Tournament – Yrs 5 & 6: (Form to fill in, in this newsletter). Dear Parents and Caregivers On Friday 21st September, we will be participating in a sports tournament at Oxford Area School. We will be traveling to this tournament by school bus. Students have had the opportunity to choose either hockey or netball to play. This tournament is for students to challenge themselves against other players/teams in a competitive environment. If students have chosen hockey, they are expected to have a mouth-guard and shin-pads (already). To make this an enjoyable experience for all students we require parent helpers to look after a sports team. I will guarantee you will look after your own child's team and you do not have to know all of the rules. BLAKE, Ministry of Works, Wellington Abstract Changes in the geomorphology of the coastal plain river mouths of Pegasus Bay over the last 100 years are considered. Comment is also made on estuarine sediment and flow, the difficulty of measuring these two quantities and the need to treat the estuarine channel of a river as an important part of the catchment. INTRODUCTION New Zealand hydrologists are very much concerned with river catchment analysis but as yet have not considered the tidal section in detail. The river channel from its mouth to the maximum distance upstream of tidal influence is a complex section where fluvial and marine processes combine and conventional flow gauging methods prove unreliable. Observations from the lower reaches of some typical New Zealand rivers (Blake, 1963) indicate some of the tidal channel details and gauging problems. It starts with pioneer settlers in a small village half a world away from their homes. It ends - at least this part of the story does - in a burgeoning satellite town. Letters and news originally took months to arrive. Now they are as instant as emails and television. However, through the dramatic changes of the last 150 years runs the common thread of faith. This is a story which needs to be read twice. The first time, read what Jean Turvey has written. In any history there are those people who stand out because of their leadership, strong personalities, or eccentricities. Ministers loom large, simply because they are involved in most aspects of parish life. Buildings feature, because they provide a focal point for congregational life. The second reading of this history is more difficult. You need to read between the lines, to focus on what is not written. The unrecorded history of these three parishes is just as vital as the narration of obvious events and personalities. It consists of people whose names are unknown, but who worshipped faithfully and gave life to these local churches.

Many Holocene alluvial and marine deposits in and around Christchurch experienced minor to severe liquefaction during the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquake sequence. Liquefaction and permanent ground deformations were most severe in the city during the 22 February 2011 event. Permanent horizontal ground displacements up to 0.35 m also occurred at several locations in moderately sloping Pleistocene loess-colluvium in the Port Hills area, but no sand/silt boil has been connected to those deposits.

    Enviroschools Canterbury February 2016 Chatterbox Students show water zone committee how it’s done! Students at our annual Enviro-leaders camp enjoyed getting into character for our mock water zone committee meeting ably chaired by a real committee chairperson, Clare McKay from the Waimakariri Water Zone Committee. Students gained insight into the complexities of water management and the different values and perspectives held by different groups. For many, this was the highlight of our camp with teachers impressed at how articulate these future leaders are in expressing their opinion. North Loburn students aka ‘Giga Energy Company’ confidently outlined the benefits of a fictitious hydro dam on the Glentui River as part of a mock water zone committee meeting 2016 Enviroleaders camp at Glentui Kia ora tātou, Thanks to the support of the Christchurch City Council’s Strengthening Communities Fund we are able to again offer facilitation support to CCC Enviroschools.
