Adelaide Fringe Artist Fund Guide for 2021 Applicants

The Fringe Artist Fund raises funds to support artists and venues presenting in the Adelaide Fringe program. We encourage bold ideas to take shape and support all forms of expression which enrich our festival offerings.

This guide aims to assist you in completing your form and to give context to the questions asked in the application form.

Which grant should I apply for? Artists – Make it Happen and/or Innovate The Make it Happen stream (up to $5000) provides practical financial assistance needed to “Make it Happen” with regards to travel, marketing and production.

The Innovate stream (up to $5000) supports creative projects that include bold concepts and thinking. Experimentation is encouraged as is original concepts, theatrical devices, technology and ways to connect and involve audiences. An eye towards the legacy of this work including future touring, and audience/community legacy will be an important factor when considering the work

You can apply for both the Make it Happen and Innovation grants with one application. The maximum amount you can apply for with combined streams is $5000.

South Australian Producers South Australian based producers presenting multiple events in Adelaide Fringe can apply for up to $5000 to assist in the following areas: - Wages - Further training and mentorship for the producer - PR/Marketing - Office space - Operation costs across their brand

Venues South Australian based venue operators for up to $5000 to assist in providing suitable performance spaces for Adelaide Fringe artists. - Increase accessibility at venue e.g. to provide more Auslan interpreted events, build accessible ramps, hire in climate control measures etc. - Marketing e.g. hiring a publicist or sponsorship partner - Fringe specific hireage and technical assistance e.g. equipment hire/leasing, engineer assessment for circus rig, temporary sound baffling - Innovation e.g. creation of specialist venues to present work such as a dedicated dance space, or queer cultural hub - Sustainability e.g. installation of electronic billboards, or app development to replace flyers and posters etc.

The Artist Fund does not support - Presentation of work outside of Adelaide Fringe 2021 - Capital purchases - Renovations

How to apply All applications to the Adelaide Fringe Artist Fund must be completed online via the Award Force platform. We will not accept applications by email or post. Please advise the Artist and Venues team if you have specific accessibility requirements completing this form.

Once you start your application you will be able to save it in progress and return to complete or edit your submission right up until the closing date.

What you will need Browser: Do not use Internet Explorer to complete your submission. Instead, please use one of the following browsers - Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox

Video pitch: You will need to make a video of yourself introducing who you are, your project, event or venue and why you are applying for funding. Please upload your video to vimeo or and link to it in the application. If you have password protected the video, there will be space in the application form to let us know the password. The maximum time limit is 3 minutes – you do not have to use all of this time.

Artistic / Venue Team roles and biographies: A one-page document listing the key roles and people involved, include any mentors or collaborators if you have them. Ideally you should only have a brief paragraph of around 100 - 150 words about each person.

A budget and marketing strategy: We have prepared templates below for you to use. Please fill out whatever is relevant to you. What we need to know is: 1. how you intend to spend the grant (including quotes for any related services as required) 2. who your audience is and how you are going to get them along to your event/s

Assessment Criteria ARTIST GRANTS Eligibility: - An artist/collective currently living in OR - An Australian artist/collective currently living overseas*

*please note if you are based overseas, you are required to use the grant to present your event at Adelaide Fringe 2021. This includes adhering to Australian Government policy and best practice around COVID-19. If you have any uncertainty about presenting at Adelaide Fringe in 2021, then please do not apply for the grant.

Stream one: Make it Happen Proposed projects can be new or existing works which will enhance the Fringe program.

Stream two: Innovate Proposed projects will be new works that: - Are in early stages or project development (may have already premiered with a limited run elsewhere) - Have never been performed publicly in Adelaide - Include new innovation, concepts, theatrical devices, technology or new ways in connecting with audiences

Assessment (total 100 points) - Potential and impact of project (40) o Wow! How will this project surprise and wow the audience - Audience and community engagement (20) o Ability of project to engage with communities and audiences that traditionally have lower participation levels with Adelaide Fringe e.g. culturally and access diverse communities, regional communities - Experience of artistic team (30) o Ability to realise ambition of project to completion - Impact of funding on project (10)

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN PRODUCER GRANT Eligibility: - A producer based primarily in AND - Is independent (operates as an individual or small company) AND - Is producing multiple events registered as part of Adelaide Fringe 2021

Assessment (total 100 points) - Potential and impact of project including legacy (40) o What is the potential legacy of the producer on both creatives and the audience or community it engages with e.g. future touring opportunities,

professional development, empowering regional artists/audiences to share their stories, etc. - Impact of funding on project (20) o How unique or creative the use of funding is in relation to the industry o Supporting a niche idea or concept that is otherwise unrepresented - Experience of producer (20) o Ability to realise ambition of project to completion - Audience and community engagement (20) o Ability of project to engage with communities and audiences that traditionally have lower participation levels with Adelaide Fringe e.g. culturally and access diverse communities, regional communities o Progressing the diversity of artists in Adelaide Fringe

VENUE GRANTS Eligibility - The venue operator is based primarily in South Australia

Assessment (total 100 points) - Impact of funding for venue (40) o on artists – provides suitable performance spaces, support structures for artists, programming o on audiences – create an environment that audiences will return to, open Fringe to new or under-serviced audiences, marketing strategy o on surrounding community – create positive experience for adjacent neighbours (noise, foot traffic etc), creating avenues to employment (interns, mentorships), have a lasting impact beyond Fringe - Experience of venue team (40) o Ability of team to provide a vibrant venue during Fringe o Support of collaborators, additional funders and artists o Good understanding of deliverables to artists and audiences - How unique or needed in Adelaide Fringe the venue is (20) o Does Adelaide Fringe already have a similar venue o Does it support a niche idea or concept that is otherwise unrepresented o Will this venue progress the diversity of artists in Adelaide Fringe

Notification All applicants will be notified of their application outcome by 31 July 2020

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Successful applicants will be required to enter into a MOU with Adelaide Fringe before any funds are transferred.

Successful applicants will be expected to provide a one page acquittal detailing what they spent their funding on, along with artistic and financial outcomes within two months of the end of Adelaide Fringe 2020

FAQ Can I apply if I am an international artist living in Australia? If you have permanent resident status in Australia, then yes you can apply for funding.

Can I apply if I’m an Australian artist living overseas? If you are an Australian citizen, then yes you can apply for funding

Can I apply for both the Make it Happen and Innovate grants? Yes. If your work meets the criteria for both, then just tick both boxes

What activities does the Adelaide Fringe Artist Fund not support? We do not support capital purchases, renovations or presentation of work outside of Adelaide Fringe

I’ve successfully applied and received an Adelaide Fringe Artist Fund grant in the past, can I apply again? Maybe. If you received a grant for Adelaide Fringe 2020 then you are not eligible to apply for this round. If you received a grant for Adelaide Fringe 2019 or earlier, then you can apply this year so long as you have submitted an acquittal for your previous grant.
