  • Halestorm Rocks the Palladium
Halestorm Rocks The Palladium Halestorm recently came through New England and played the Worcester Palladium on Nov 29. The show was nothing short of amazing. Frontwoman Lzzy Hale was on fire with her incredible vocal range as well as her ability to lay down awesome guitar riffs with the forefathers of hard rock. Opening the set was their hard and heavy track, “Mz Hyde” off of their last studio album The Strange Case Of…. The crowd was eating it up from the moment Lzzy stepped out onto the stage. The night was full of their signature tracks, old and new, and with a few surprises thrown in the mix. Known for their ability to do any songs they’ve covered justice, there were a couple curveballs in the night’s lineup of songs. First, was the classic Judas Priest song “Dissident Aggressor.” Being a huge Halestorm fan, this took me by surprise. A very pleasant surprise. To see this band rock such a killer song from one of the godfathers of heavy metal, and have Lzzy do Rob Halford such justice, was just something you had to see to believe. The other cover choice toward the end of their set was the Fleetwood Mac hit “Gold Dust Woman.” Stevie Nicks is a big influence for Lzzy’s more mellow vocals, and I can only assume that Stevie herself would be incredibly proud. The cover was absolutely flawless. I think this is how Halestorm appeals to such a wide range of age groups. They have their own classic hard rock sound, but are tweaked to appeal to younger generations.

Cornhusker Impressions for alumni and friends of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry Class of 2018 graduates say farewell (see pg 22) Meet Xiaoxi ‘Sophie’ Cui, the first China Scholar to graduate from the College of Dentistry (see pg 24) Spring 2018 From the Dean Dear Friends and Colleagues, You may notice that this issue of Impressions is a bit larger than previous issues. Moving forward, we have decided to publish two print issues annually (instead of three). At the same time, we have started a monthly electronic newsletter, “News Bites”. If you have not received our electronic newsletter and would like to, please make sure to send your preferred email address to [email protected]. Our electronic newsletter will keep you up- to-date on a more frequent basis and includes videos and other regular columns not featured in Impressions. We have much to celebrate in this issue, including faculty members achieving major service anniversaries, new faculty leaders, and the story of how several of our faculty have made an academic career – a new career (story on page 16)! Dr. Day had the idea of being an academician for many years, eventually seeking out teaching courses to prepare her for the transition; for Dr. Zalewski, it meant pursuing an idea of being a teacher in his profession. Dr. Robin Hattervig took the leap after hosting fourth-year dental students in his practice, while Dr. Bokemper decided to “test the waters” before diving into a new career. Regardless of their journeys, we are delighted to have them on board and making significant contributions to our academic endeavors! Additionally, our teaching continues to evolve.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter presents background of the study, research question, research objective, significance of research, scope and limitation of research, clarification of key term, and organization of writing. 1.1 Background of study Everybody knows that language is the most important thing in human life. (Finochiaro, 1974) argues that, language is an arbitrary vocal symbol which permits all people in a given culture, or other people who have learned the system of that culture, to communicate or to interact. Every human has a requirement to communicate with other. Language is a system of symbol that is meaningful and articulate sound which is arbitrary and conventional, which is used as a means communicating by a group of human being to give birth to feelings and thoughts. Shortly, the main function of language is for communication and interaction among people (Syamsuddin, 1986). Human beings need language as their communication because language as the branch of linguistic. Semantic is the systematic study of meaning, and linguistic semantic is the study of how language organize and express meanings (Charles, 1998). The researcher expects this study is useful for the other researcher who wishes to know about semantics. Moreover, semantics as an important branch of linguistics is interesting to be studies especially when it is applied to literary work such as song, poem and prose. In semantics, it studies about meanings. According to (Charles, 1998) the dimensions of meaning include reference and denotation, connotation, sense relations, lexical and grammatical meaning, morphemes, homonymy, polysemy, lexical ambiguity, sentence and meaning. Besides that, according to (Chaer, 2002) kind of meaning include a lexical, grammatical and contextual meaning, referential and non referential meaning, denotative and connotative meaning, conceptual and associative meaning, and lexeme.

SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators (Bio) “I think it’s time to set this world on fire/I think it’s time to push it to the edge/I’m so f---in’ bored so trip the wire/It may never be this good again” --From the opening power chords of the single and title track of WORLD ON FIRE WORLD ON FIRE is the new album from SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators, and it comes on full throttle and in- your-face, a hunk of burning rock „n‟ roll that takes no prisoners. Intensifying the band‟s sound and vision, it marks the follow-up to their succesful and acclaimed 2012 debut, Apocalyptic Love, also released on SLASH‟s own indie Dik Hayd International label distributed through Caroline. “We‟ve been playing together for awhile and I think it‟s gotten to the point where everybody‟s comfortable in our own skins,” says Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist SLASH, who has amassed album sales of over 100 million copies, with seven GRAMMY nominations, a GRAMMY award and countless accolades. “It turned out to be a very easy process. We definitely had chemistry from the very first time we entered a room together. It was instantaneous magic.” WORLD ON FIRE represents that chemistry, as SLASH, vocalist MYLES KENNEDY, bassist TODD KERNS and drummer BRENT FITZ blaze through 17 songs that run the gamut of topics, some derived from tour bus conversations between the singer and guitarist. These range from the pointed sexual politics of “Battleground,” “Dirty Girl” and “Stone Blind,” the anti-war sentiments of “Dissident” and the coming-of-age saga “Bent to Fly,” to such charged issues as elephant poaching (“Beneath the Savage Sun”), child abuse in the Catholic Church (“The Unholy”), addiction (“Wicked Stone”) and the perils faced by females of a certain age in show business (“Withered Delilah”).

The tour will bring together two of the top women in rock — Amy Lee and Lzzy Hale — for a truly badass experience night after night. Close friends as well as close collaborators, just last year, Lzzy performed back-up vocals on Evanescence’s “Use My Voice,” and Amy joined Lzzy on a new version of Halestorm’s “Break In.” In addition to new music and the biggest hits from both women, the shows will highlight their personal bond and the music that’s come of it. Amy Lee said: “Words can’t express how excited we are to go back on tour with our friends and rock out again. We’ve been building this new music in isolation for over a year and dreaming of what it will be like to finally play it live, and to experience it together with our fans for the first time.
