For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] A slow reading of Olive Senior's hurricane story Abstract Over the course of the 20th century, recourse to satellite and radar technology, and the use of reconnaissance aircraft, has greatly assisted the tracking of tropical cyclones. In addition, data buoys are now employed throughout the Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic and Pacific es aboards to relay air and water temperature, wind speed, air pressure and wave conditions that enable more accurate prediction and monitoring of storm systems. But before the people of the Caribbean had recourse to modern instrumentation and communication, surviving a regular hurricane season was founded on sensitivity to environment, accumulated knowledge passed from one generation to the next by word of mouth; and what amounted to a rehearsed, even ritualised, set of practices. As Jamaican Canadian poet Olive Senior writes in 'Hurricane Story, 1903': In those days storm warning came by telegraph to Postmistress. Living in the bush, Grandfather couldn't see her rush to broadcast the news by posting a black flag. -

Fairbanks Papers (M 0100) ACCESSION 1922.0001 NUMBER: NOTES: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Delavan Smith (1861–1922) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to newspaper publisher William Henry and Emaline Reynolds Smith. He was educated at Lake Forest (Illinois) Academy and Lake Forest University. Smith also earned an engineering degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was briefly employed as an engineer before following his father into the newspaper publishing field. Like his father, Delavan Smith was involved in several newspaper-related industries, including serving as vice-president for both the Oliver Typewriter Company and the Cox Multi-Mailer Corporation, which produced bundling machines for newspaper mailings. In addition to his newspaper ventures, Delavan Smith was an astute businessman with an estate worth over $2 million at the time of his death. -

F21 The dissertation was completed on 30 April 1905 and submitted to the University of Zurich on 20 July.r31 . On 19 August 1905, shortly after the thesis was accepted, the Annalen der Physik received a slightly different version for publication.L41 Einstein 1906c (Doc. 33), published half a year later as a supplement to Einstein 1906a, utilizes experimental data not previously available to recalculate the size of sugar mole- cules. In 191 1, after Jacques Bancelin found a discrepancy between the results of his experiments and Einstein’s predictions, a calculational error in Einstein 1905j (Doc. 15) was discovered. Traces of an unsuccessful attempt by Einstein to locate the error, pre- served as marginalia and interlineations in an offprint of the paper, are discussed in the annotations to Doc. -

Begin, founding bishop of the Diocese of Oakland, Bishop Cummins was appointed the second Bishop of Oakland and installed on June 30, 1977. He was the bishop of Hippo in North Africa (Algeria). Feast of Pope St. Pius X, August 21st Saint Augustine is one of the seminal minds of the early Church and wrote extensively on topics related to Christian Pope Saint Pius X (Italian: Pio X) born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto,[a] (2 June 1835 – 20 August 1914), was Pope from doctrine: Trinity, divine grace, evil, original sin, etc. His August 1903 to his death in 1914. He was canonized in 1954.
