Truck, which had been the centrepiece of Oxford’s live music calendar since 1998, surviving both floods and foot and mouth crises, succumbed to financial woes last year, going into administration in September. However, the event has been taken over by the organisers of Y-Not Festival in Derbyshire, which won Best Grassroots Festival 2011 at the UK Festival Awards. The new organisers hope to take Truck back to its roots as a local community festival. In a statement on the Truck website, Joe and Robin announced, ““We have always felt a great responsibility for the integrity and sustainability of Truck Festival, which grew so quickly and with such enthusiasm from very humble beginnings in 1998. Via Truck’s unique catering arrangements with the Rotary Club, tens of thousands of pounds have been raised for charities and good causes every year, including last year, and many great bands have taken their first steps to international prominence. For weeks we have been arriving over the earth’s broken skin, over mountains and rivers, shaking the aching flagpoles from our shoulders. Now all the priests and imams and rabbis and shamans are gathered beside the others, teachers, brothers and kings and they’re sharing recipes and cooking sweet stories over fires. Suddenly we hear a voice calling from the sky or within – or is it a radio? – and it sings of quilts and white lilies as if wool and petals were engines. It’s a lullaby, a prayer we all understand, familiar like the scent of a lover’s skin. And as we listen we remember our grandmothers’ hands, the knitted strength of staying, how silence rises like warmth from a woven blanket. And slowly the lines begin to disappear from our skin and our memories spin until we’ve forgotten the I of our own histories and everyone is holy, everyone is laughing, weeping, singing, It’s over, come over, come in.     Euell Porter Material prepared by Maurice Alfred Biographical Sketch of Euell Porter 1910-1998 Edwin Euell Porter was born October 10, 1910 near Franklin, Texas and died September 23, 1998, in Waco Texas. He was the last of six children born to George W. and Alma Parker Porter. His parents worked a small farm outside of Franklin in Robertson County. George W. came from Missouri and was a second generation Irish immigrant. Euell’s mother was of Cajun descent with hair as “black as coal.” His twin sisters, Addis Mae and Gladys Faye, and his brothers, Richard Bland, Samuel Lewis, and George Felton, took care of their little brother almost from his birth. When Porter was about six, his mother became bedridden with influenza and he remembered his mother saying “bring that baby here and let him stand by the bed and sing for me.” Though his mother was ill, the Porter’s sang and made music each night, with his sister Addis or his brother Sam playing the piano, and the rest of the family singing. His mother’s illness became progressively worse, and she died when he was eight. After her death, the family moved to a farm near Pettaway, Texas. Their new house and farm were much larger, with one room set aside for music. In the music room there was a pump organ and a five pedal upright piano. The family continued its tradition of singing, with his sister Addis Mae playing the organ and brother Samuel Lewis playing the piano. In the early 1920’s, Porter attended a singing school in Boone Prairie and it was there he learned to read shaped notes.

Weder zu heiß noch zu kalt und bei einem kleinen Lüftchen lässt es sich einige Stunden aushalten. Dieses Stehvermögen braucht das Publikum, denn mit drei Bands stehen, abgesehen von den Umbaupausen, geschlagene drei Stunden Musik auf dem Programm Eröffnet wird der Abend von einer, mir bis dato, unbekannten Band. JOHN DIVA mit seinen 'Rockets of Love' geben sich die Ehre und präsentieren in dreißig Minuten eine beeindruckende musikalische und optische Darbietung unter dem Motto: „Mama said, Rock is dead". Frontman JOHN DIVA und seine Mannen turnen in extravagantem Outfit über die Bühne. Schön grell und bunt darf es sein und sieht man dazu DIVAS passenden Hüftschwung, weiß der Fan sofort, dass es hier nur um Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll geht. Ohne Zweifel, die Truppe ist gut und rockt auch richtig fett ab. Also, im Auge behalten. Ein gelungener Einstand in den heutigen Abend. Zu EUROPE muss man nicht viel sagen. JOEY TEMPEST ist in top Form und schmettert seine bekanntesten Songs in die Menge. Das Gedränge vor der Bühne wird größer und der Hype wächst mit jedem Song ihrer einstündigen Show. Leider fällt durch die Supporterstellung einiges unter den Tisch, aber Hits wie „Carrie", „Superstitius" und natürlich das abschließende "The Final Countdown" reißen wieder alles heraus.

    CARLETON UNIVERSITY FLUID BODIES: MASCULINITY IN EMO MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BY RYAN MACK OTTAWA, ONTARIO MAY 2014 ABSTRACT Emo is a genre of music that typically involves male performers, which evolved out of the punk and hardcore movements in Washington DC during the mid-80s. Scholarly literature on emo has explored its cultural and social contexts in relation to the “crisis” of masculinity—the challenging of the legitimacy of patriarchy through “alternative” forms of masculinity. This thesis builds upon this pioneering work but departs from its perpetuation of strict masculine binaries by conflating hegemonic and subordinate/alternative masculinities into a single subject position, which I call synergistic masculinity. In doing so, I use emo to explicate this vis-à-vis an intertextual analysis that explores the dominant themes in 1) lyrics; 2) the sites of vocal production (head, throat, chest) in conjunction with pitch and timbre; 3) the extensional and intensional intervallic relationships between notes and chords, and the use of dynamics in the musical syntax; 4) the use of public and private spaces, as well as the performative masculine body in music video. I posit that masculine emo performers dissolve these hierarchically organized masculinities, which allows for a deeper musical meaning and the extramusical signification of masculinity.
