Un sistema que se lleva implantando oficialmente desde 1985 -con diversas modificaciones desde entonces- y que establece el orden de elección de jugadores del draft para los llamados lottery teams, los 14 equipos que no han logrado su clasificación para los Playoffs de la NBA de la temporada anterior. Como hemos visto en el artículo anterior, el método de selección de jugadores en este draft de rookies ha evolucionado considerablemente. En la era del draft territorial se usaba el llamado coin flip, donde se escogían los dos peores equipos de la temporada pasada y se lanzaba una moneda al aire, y de esta simple manera salía el equipo que elegía en primer lugar, y cuál en segundo, y el resto de los equipos se ordenaban en orden inverso a la clasificación de la temporada anterior. En los inicios del draft de rookies, el número de rondas de draft no estaban tampoco fijadas, y podía haber tantas rondas mientras hubiese franquicias dispuestos a elegir jugadores. Esto se cambió -afortunadamente- en 1974, donde se redujo el número de rondas a diez, después también de ver como en el año anterior se obtuvo el récord de rondas de draft en la historia, con 20. Las continuas renovaciones del reglamento de la liga hicieron que el número de rondas fuesen reduciéndose más, con siete rondas en 1985, tres rondas en 1988 y desde 1989 se estableció las dos rondas que actualmente siguen vigentes. En 1984 el sistema coin flip acabó entrando definitivamente en barrena con las denuncias de tanking de media liga ante algunos equipos que perdían encuentros deliberadamente para obtener buenas posiciones en el draft de rookies. El caso que más repercusión tuvo fue el de los Houston Rockets, que pese a tener una buena plantilla con un joven Ralph Sampson al frente, acabaron perdiendo «sospechosamente» muchos más partidos de los esperados. En este draft se alzaron con el primer pick, y eligieron a Hakeem Olajuwon. Para evitar este tanking, la NBA estableció posteriormente que únicamente los tres equipos con peor balance de victorias-derrotas de la anterior temporada fueran los que participasen en esta lotería, y el resto de las elecciones de lotería se haría conforme al orden inverso de la clasificación del año pasado. Este nuevo sistema de lotería se comenzó a usar en 1985, y establecía que en tres sobres diferentes apareciesen escritos los nombres de los tres equipos con peor balance, seleccionando una mano inocente los sobres al azar. Sin embargo, este sistema fue duramente criticado el mismo año en que se puso en práctica por primera vez, ya que se acusó a la NBA de manipulación para que los Knicks obtuviesen la primera elección de draft, con la que escogerían a Patrick Ewing. Las continuas presiones que directivos y franquicias hicieron sobre la NBA obligaron nuevamente a modificar el sistema en 1989, entrando en vigor al año siguiente. De este modo, se estableció un sistema de calificaciones ponderadas de tal manera que el equipo con peor balance tuviera también un porcentaje de éxito mayor de obtener el primer pick del draft, y así sucesivamente hasta establecer una calificación ponderada hasta el último equipo de lotería. En 1993 se modificaron nuevamente las ponderaciones después de que en el draft de ese mismo año los Orlando Magic obtuviesen el primer pick de draft, siendo el equipo con mejor balance de los 14 que no se clasificaron para Playoffs del año anterior. Los Magic seleccionaron ese año a Chris Webber -aunque posteriormente lo traspasaron a los Warriors por Penny Hardaway y 3 picks de primera ronda- y después de haber escogido a Shaquille O’Neal el año anterior. Este sistema es el que ha permanecido vigente hasta hoy en día, aunque para este draft de 2019 volverán a haber modificaciones. Así, los tres peores equipos tendrán las mismas oportunidades de obtener el pick número uno del draft (14% de probabilidades), evitando así que el tanking siga siendo una práctica habitual en la temporada NBA. NBA Draft Lottery 2019 El tradicional NBA Draft Lottery ha vuelto a dar más de una sorpresa, tanto para bien como para mal. Sin duda los grandes beneficiados de la noche fueron los Pelicans de New Orleans, quienes con solo un 6% de posibilidades de llevarse el pick #1 del draft al final consiguieron la proeza. Curiosamente, los grandes damnificados de esta lotería han sido las tres franquicias que más opciones tenían de alzarse con el codiciado premio: Los New York Knicks se tendrán que conformar con Ja Morant o R.J. Barrett con su pick #3, los Phoenix Suns descienden hasta un inesperado #6, mientras que Cleveland Cavaliers elegirá desde el #5. La gran incógnita será ver qué harán este verano los Pelicans con Anthony Davis, que tenía todas las papeletas para abandonar la franquicia rumbo a un equipo que opte por el anillo, aunque según apuntan los rumores, todo apunta a que Zion ejercerá de nuevo buque insignia de la franquicia. Otros que están muy satisfechos de esta lotería son los Memphis Grizzlies, que contaban con poco más de un 25% de posibilidades de acabar en posición de Top 4, y que podrán elegir a Ja Morant (parece la opción que más gusta en Tennessee) o al canadiense R.J. Barrett, dejando el que no escojan para unos New York Knicks a los que un año más les ha faltado fortuna. Pese a no poder hacerse con Zion Williamson -al menos como elección de draft- la opción de R.J. Barrett, que es la que más fuerza está cobrando en estas últimas horas, no está tampoco nada mal. Además, cabe destacar la caída de Chicago Bulls hasta el pick #7, teniendo el cuarto peor balance de victorias de la competición, y la de los Phoenix Suns hasta el pick #6, teniendo el segundo peor balance de victorias de la temporada. En el lado contrario, los L.A. Lakers tendrán una interesante opción con ese inesperado pick #4, mientras que los Atlanta Hawks han conseguido una segunda elección de lotería, ya que el pick de los Dallas Mavericks no acabó entre el Top 5.
