Nestled down a quiet cul-de-sac section in Honeyguide Way is the home of much loved ex-Natal and ex-Springbok Rugby Player, Keegan Daniel and his beautiful new bride Tania.

This incredible home is one of the biggest 3 bedroom homes on the Estate and is built by Geoff Southwood, a very successful spec builder whose builds exude an incredible sense of style and class. House Daniel is no exception. Upon entering the home, one feels an immense sense of space, a feeling that is aided by the incredible view.

Tania is a consultant at Investec and Keegan is currently playing his second season of rugby in Japan for the Kubota Spears. The newlyweds have a passion for entertaining, cooking, spending time with family and friends and of course, a number of sports activities.

08 | BCE MAGAZINE BCE MAGAZINE | 09 HOMEHOME FEATURE FEATURE 1 1 MEET KEEGAN THE DANIELSMITHS

The gorgeous couple met in 2013 and were engaged within 6 months. Before Keegan’s first season with the Kubota Spears, they decided to move to our beautiful North Coast. This was partly because it was away from the city “but not too far”, and because of the North Coasts wonderful family atmosphere coupled with its affordability compared to Durban estates. "... away from the city, but not too far..."

Peter Cameron, Home and Country’s principle sales agent showed Keegan and Tania the amazing opportunities which Brettenwood had to offer and it was the exquisite large tree in front of their house that totally blew them away. Once they were told the site was a spec build option they knew it would be a fantastic investment opportunity and were quick to sign on the dotted line. “The sales process was amazing, the Home & Country Sales team are extremely friendly and helpful, they made extra time and went above and beyond to help”. One of the biggest appeals of Brettenwood was the safety. “Not everyone or just anyone is allowed access onto the Estate, there is no golf course or restaurant which is accessed by the general public at any time.”

Since living on the Estate they have fallen in love with Brettenwood, “the Estate is immaculate, clean and the guards greet you by name and always with a large friendly smile”. With Keegan away in Japan, Tania feels extremely safe within the Brettenwood walls and has become a familiar face within the close community. She takes advantage of the many exquisite walking trails within the Estate and is always amazed at how friendly everyone is.

Pictured right: Brett Hulett and Denis Montgomery at Boulder Bay in 2004.

We had a good day, changing in the cottage, running along the deserted beaches beyond Boulder Bay, splashing in the cool springtime sea, having our spare picnic and wearily returning in the late afternoon. My memory of that day remains powerful because it was a special day with a particular girlfriend, and the last time that I was in Uncle Walter’s cottage at Boulder Bay.

After World War II my Uncle Walter had bought the cottage, which stood at the head of Boulder Bay where the huge apartment complex called The Boulders now stands, in what became known Map: Location of Walter Hulett’s as Ballito. The Townsend family owned the farm which was subdivided into Ballito township and cottage at Boulder Bay. their homestead stood on the crest of the hill where the smart Hotel Izulu nestles today within fine old trees. The Townsends sold the first plots along the seashore to friends and a little enclave of simple holiday homes had developed which was known as Compensation Beach. In those days there were several like that on the North Coast, including; Tongaat Beach, Stanger Beach, Sinkwazi and Tugela Mouth.

During the late 1940s we usually spent Christmas at Uncle Walter’s Cottage, either staying over for a week or so or just gathering for the day. My cousin Brett and I would sleep on the verandah with the thunder of the ocean and the damp salty Boulder Bay air. During the day we were free to swim, fish off the rocks, fool around and meet children of the other holidaying families. Of course, Brett spent many more weekends and longer breaks at the cottage and he knew all the others well. I vaguely remember Claytons and Townsends and probably our cousin Margaret-Mary, Liege Hulett’s daughter. It’s all a long time ago. Christmas was celebrated with several roast chickens, mountains of rice and varied vegetables from the farm, cooked by Indian servants Written by Denis Montgomery on the wood-burning stove. There were candles and hissing paraffin lamps at night. Uncle Walter liked Cape sparkling red to Brettenwood wine rather than ordinary ‘champagne’ for Christmas and New Year celebrations. There was always fish and crayfish caught fresh from the sea. The rough track wound along through the cane fields, then descended a hill into a belt of coastal dune forest. As the trees closed in, the track became deep sand and my motorbike slowed and wobbled as I struggled to keep it upright and moving The last Christmas I spent at Uncle Walter’s Cottage was in 1951. I was on leave from the South African Navy and both of my on. The girl sitting behind me on the pillion seat called out with alarm and hung on more tightly. I was excited rather than cousins, Brett and Deon, were away. It was a small and somewhat sombre gathering compared to the jolly crowd of previous worried. We were young, the sun was shining bright, it was a glorious morning in 1953. Once through the sandy patch and years and I remember that day with nostalgic sadness. My parents and I had lunch with Uncle Walter and Auntie Iris and my clear of the forest, the track ran along the seashore for a short distance. Simple cottages with coarse grass lawns and borders of grandmother. Both Walter and my grandmother died during the next two years and the growing-up times with my family aloes around them, shaded by casuarinas and tall old pines, appeared where the forest had been cleared. A rush of salty humid were over. air met us and the roar of the ocean was suddenly loud. In the 1960s when the new Ballito township was proclaimed, my mother had a sudden urge to buy a plot on the seashore It was the weekend and the weather was perfect, so when I visited my girlfriend we talked immediately of going off for a picnic because she too had such poignant memories of Walter’s Cottage and other holidays by the sea during her own young days. at the beach. We usually found some quiet place on the South Coast either on our own or with other couples who also had There were some beachfront plots still available and we pondered the idea for some time. Those prime plots were a lot of money motorbikes - we would travel to Isipingo, Warner Beach or as far as Karridene. We wanted something different for a change for us then, but we were sure that values had to increase. We decided not to buy in the end, because we could not afford to build and I suddenly thought of my Uncle Walter’s cottage at Compensation Beach. It was quite far from Malvern where my girl a cottage at that time and did not want to tie up an investment with no immediate return. lived, but it was such a fine and warm, still day and it was early. She quickly made some sandwiches, we grabbed oranges and when I filled up with petrol we bought a big bottle of Suncrush and a packet of biscuits. The road north from Durban in those Many years later when Brettenwood was at last launched, Brett and I went down with his wife Margie to the beachfront at days left the suburbs from Redhill and Greenwood Park and wound through the villages of Mount Edgecombe, Verulum and Ballito. We walked about on the promenade in front of the hugely developed shoreline, trying to decide precisely where Uncle Tongaat. We called on my Auntie Iris Hulett at Pencarrow farm to pick up the key to the cottage. Iris was recently widowed, Walter’s cottage had been at the head of Boulder Bay. We found the spot, of course, and I had old snapshots from the 1940s to Uncle Walter having died earlier that year, and she wanted us to stop for tea or lunch because she was no doubt lonely, but we prove it. It was more than sixty years since we had those happy holidays during teenage years together in that quiet, unspoiled were young and thoughtless and anxious to speed off to the beach. place by the Indian Ocean.

The cottage had been closed for a while and the air was filled with the aroma of salty-damp curtains and cushion-covers mixed In April this year Brett and I stood on the terrace of his fine new home on the heights of Brettenwood, enjoying the view down with furniture polish. We opened the windows to let in the roar of the surf and the sun-warmed breeze. My girl rummaged in to the ocean. We had the same thoughts for a moment and Brett said, “Remember old Wally’s cottage and how we found the the kitchen for utensils and I wandered through the rooms, feeling suddenly wistful, moved by old memories. The furniture was exact place a few years ago?” a mix of ancient discards from family homes, collected over time and from auction sales. The beds were sagging and squeaky, the chairs and settees had lumpy cushions clothed with chintz prints exuding the damp aroma. A large threadbare Persian rug I replied, “Yes, I was thinking of that too. And the last time I visited I rode on my motorbike with my girlfriend on the sand decorated the living room floor. There were cobwebs at the windows, which were hazed by dried sea mist. In my remembering track and nearly came off.” ears I could hear the jolly talk and badinage of family gatherings. I heard my uncle’s laugh and distinctive voice and could imagine cousin Brett gesturing to me to sneak away from the boring adult talk. Brett said, “Hey, that was my old 350 cc BSA that Wally gave you.” We grinned at each other. We had come a long way since then. How did you end up in Salt Rock? I was born in KZN, but have lived in Canada, America, England and in various parts of South Africa. I was a bit of a nomad and wasn’t sure where exactly I would eventually settle and call home. In 2012 I moved to Salt Rock and immediately knew that this was home.

What is it that you love about this area? I love the fact that so many people in Ballito and Salt Rock are entrepreneurs: people who work incredibly hard and bring such varied skills to the area, but who are also committed to the very special laid back lifestyle we have here - which includes a lot of time on the beach or by the pool with family and friends! There is a sense of community here that I have never experienced elsewhere. That is also why I try to do my bit for our community and volunteer as the chairperson of the Salt Rock Neighbourhood Watch. I believe if we can keep our sense of community while this little town expands so rapidly around us we will maintain what attracts so many people to this area.

The construction of all the remaining units in Forest Village Phase 2 were completed and transfer of the all the units to the buyers were registered, bringing about the completion of Forest Village Phase 2. The construction of the first three units in Forest Village Phase 3 commenced, with construction of further units also under way. The sectional title register for Forest Village Phase 3 was opened and transfers of the first few units in Forest Village Phase 3 to the buyers were registered. Construction of the first units in the next phase on Brettenwood Lakes commenced with the transfers anticipated to be registered early in 2016.

The year brought about some changes on the Estate. Amongst others, there was a new management team brought in for the development company. A new security service provider was appointed to manage the security on the Estate. Following the chairperson of the Home Owners’ Association being a nominee of the development company for a few years, a Homeowner representative was again appointed as chairperson. A policy was implemented permitting only fully qualified architects to submit plans to the Architectural Review Committee, bringing Brettenwood in line with other comparable upmarket estates. Whilst change does sometimes cause anxiety, it is often good to bring in fresh blood and new ideas rather than merely continuing along a path that may lead to complacency. With the world changing at such a rapid pace one has to be continually seeking to improve and adapt to stay at the forefront. It is no different for Brettenwood Coastal Estate. Brettenwood Coastal Estate has to continue seeking out ways to maintain its status as a sought after place to live on the North Coast.

2015 has also seen its fair share of challenges for residents on the North Coast. The Eskom load shedding has continued and, to compound matters, the drought in the province has intensified with severe water restrictions being imposed. Whilst these challenges are frustrating and at times seem unbearable, adversity has a way of generating strength and a sense of community amongst those facing it together.

To top it off, the two major disasters of the year were obviously the failure of the Proteas and the Springboks to bring the 2015 Cricket and Rugby World Cups home. The disasters were compounded by the fact that South Africa lost to New Zealand in the semi-finals in both tournaments. It is bad enough losing to Australia or New Zealand in one or other of the Magnificent Home Package tournaments but to lose to the same country in the semi-final of both tournaments is a catastrophe. It is interesting how sport can be such a Set along Plover Crescent lies this magnificent family home package inspired by a past Springbok great, and his uniting factor and at the same time such a divisive issue in our country. professional architectural and build team. In fact, since the first time they drove through the “magical” looking entrance into Brettenwood, it was a “no brainer” that this would be their dream place to live.

"It takes a certain special eye to look at a piece of land and see what it can be..."

Quiet, secluded, spacious and prestigious, their large piece of land in Sunbird Lane, purchased in October 2013, was exactly what they were looking for and more. You don’t need a lot of space to create a great kitchen! A good kitchen designer will help you get the most out of your small space so that you don’t have to sacrifice your style or the functionality of your kitchen.... Here are some tips from Jacqui Russouw, “Kitchens for You” graphic designer on how to create the kitchen of your dreams!

Create More Worktop Space With An Undermount Sink Worktop space is very important in any kitchen, you need to be able to use every inch. Undermount sinks are a great option, the edges of the sink are concealed under the worktop giving you extra worktop space, grooving into the Pull Out Pantry stone allows for drainage of water. Everyone would love a pantry cupboard in their kitchen, unfortunately for some of us we just don’t have the space. The solution? A slim pull out pantry can be tucked into the tightest of spaces and items are easily in reach even if they’re right at the back. Drawers inside tall cupboards are also a great idea for storage and provide ample easy to reach space.

Pull Out Shelves A pull out shelf inside a cupboard provides easy access to anything from pots and pans to your Kenwood chef. Rather have these large items stored in a cupboard than on your worktop. A carousel is also another great idea for those awkward corner units.

Built In Appliances Nothing is more frustrating than having your microwave on top of your worktop when you’re already struggling for worktop space. A great idea is to fit your microwave into a tall unit. This way it’s off your counter and also provides cupboards below and above the microwave for added storage. Consider fitting your oven below the microwave, you can then use the space you were going to use for an under counter oven for drawers to store pots and pans or your plates and dishes. Cabinets To The Ceiling I don’t understand why everyone Once you’re happy with the new design and layout of your kitchen doesn’t do this. Yes, it may not be and have used all our tips and tricks to maximise your storage space, easily accessible but it’s still worth the next question to ask is “How do I make my kitchen look bigger?” having the extra storage space. Remember it doesn’t matter if your kitchen is done in pale colours or Especially for the items you don’t dark, the trick here is lighting. Poor lighting can even turn large use as often, these items take kitchens into a dull small space. Light beaming in will help it feel larger unnecessary space in the than what it is. So if your kitchen has a window or two make sure they cupboards that you need for your stay open to allow as much natural light to flood in as possible. daily items. Clearing clutter off the worktop makes the kitchen look Make sure your kitchen light is an appropriate size for your kitchen and add under counter lights, as this will brighten up your prep area more spacious. space as well. And lastly remember - The more organized your kitchen is, the larger it will appear.

May your Christmas sparkle with moments of love and laughter. We hope 2016 brings many sweet memories and peaceful times, we wish you a prosperous New Year.
