WHUISA is delighted to support the Jack Leslie Campaign. Jack Leslie should have been the first black footballer to play for England after being selected for the team in 1925 but was denied his place because of the colour of his skin. As many West Ham fans already know, Jack was born in Canning Town and played for Barking Town FC before joining Plymouth Argyle in 1921. He enjoyed a career that included 137 goals in 400 appearances which brought him to the attention of the FA (at that time it was common for players to be selected from teams outside of the top flight). Many will remember the article on the West Ham website: https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2019/october/30-october/black- hammers-celebrating-lives-jack-leslie-and-john-charles After his playing career ended, Jack worked until retirement in the West Ham United boot room, cleaning the boots of Martin Peters, Geoff Hurst and others. He is fondly remembered by legends such as Clyde Best, who has spoken in support of the campaign. Check out this YouTube clip of Jack in the dressing room on his retirement day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifmhoo9cwdc The Jack Leslie Campaign is fundraising to build a statue of Jack Leslie and to share awareness of his story, with a strong anti-racism theme. You can find out more about the campaign here https://jackleslie.co.uk/ The campaign is supported by West Ham greats including Carlton Cole and David Cross. We encourage our members to check out The Jack Leslie Campaign and the crowdfunded appeal. https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/jack-leslie-campaign Make sure you reference West Ham when posting a comment! .
