Things were a bit different on Saturday, as the Yote secondary was stout throughout the day – limiting SOU to just one reception of 20-yards or more and holding the Raiders to just 141 passing yards – their lowest passing total in 32 games, dating back to 2015. Safety Jayden Dawson was key, intercepting a pair of Wyatt Hutchinson passes – the first C of I player with a multi-pick game since Nate Moore in 2015. The redshirt freshman ranks third on the team with 23 total tackles and is one of five players in the Frontier Conference with two or more interceptions.

FORD PLAYS DOWNHILL: With SOU focused on running the football, safety David Ford was a menace to the Raiders attack, leading the Yotes with a team-high 10 tackles – including nine solo stops. Ford becomes just the fifth C of I player to record at least nine solo tackles in a game – as Nate Moore accomplished the feat five times in his career, while Jordan Vielma, Segun Olubi and Forrest Rivers all logged one game with nine or more solo tackles.

FRONT SEVEN KEY IN THE RUN GAME: Though Southern rushed for 250 yards in the win, the bulk of the yardage came on four carries that gained 20-or-more yards. The C of I defense was solid, holding the stable of SOU ball carries to two yards or fewer on 22 rushing attempts on the afternoon – including nine carries for either a loss or zero yards. Linebackers Forrest Rivers, Viliami Hansen and Graham Carnahan were active – Rivers recording nine tackles, with both Hansen and Carnahan each adding six – while Zach White paced the defensive line with a career-high six tackles. Defensive ends Keegan McCoy and Levi Russo-Bell combined for 12 tackles, while tackles Oscar Reyes and Demetreus Taua each had three.

KEEPING THE OFFENSE ON THE FIELD: Time of possession has been an asset to the Yotes over the past four seasons – winning the TOP battle in 2014 and 2015, while holding possession for nearly 30 minutes a game each of the past two years. It has been a challenge for the team this season, as the C of I opponents have held a 34-to-26 minute edge in TOP – with the Yotes through three games recording just two drives of four minutes or longer – and only one drive of 10 plays or more.

PENALTIES A KILLER: C of I’s issue with the yellow flag continued at Southern Oregon, as nine penalties were issued against the Yotes, resulting in 110 penalty yards. The squad has been penalized 31 times through three games for 297 yards – resulting in eight first downs for their opponents.

NEED THIRD DOWN IMPROVEMENT: The 2018 season has started similarly to last year, as the Coyotes have struggled on third down, converting just 24-percent of their opportunities. C of I started the 2017 season just 9-for-50 on third down, before converting 53-percent of their third down opportunities over the final seven games of the season.

RECORD BOOK: Seven Coyotes are currently in the Top-25 of the C of I career record book – led by Darius-James Peterson, who is No. 2 all-time in total offense (4,646) and rushing touchdowns (31); No. 3 in total touchdowns (31) and points scored (186); No. 4 in pass attempts (365) and rushing yards (1,911); No. 5 in pass completions (194) and passing yards (2,735) and No. 6 in touchdown passes (11) and rushing attempts (367). Kyle Mitchell holds the school record for extra points made (75) and field goals made (10) and ranks No. 14 in points scored (105); Wes Fitzpatrick is No. 14 in receiving yards (598), No. 18 in receptions (41) and No. 19 in touchdown catches (3); Keegan Crafton is No. 14 in touchdown receptions (4), No. 16 in receiving yards (549) and No. 20 in receptions (38); Nik Lyons is No. 10 in interceptions (5); Tristen Alesi is No. 20 in interceptions (3); with Nick Calzaretta No. 14 in touchdown runs (14) and No. 21 in total touchdowns (14).

RECAP – SOUTHERN OREGON 35, COLLEGE OF IDAHO 28: Southern Oregon recovered a College of Idaho onside kick with one minute remaining to thwart a late Coyote rally, as the No. 4 ranked Raiders earned a 35-28 victory at Raider Stadium. The Yotes battled back from a 27-14 second half deficit, as a Darius- James Peterson scored a pair of short touchdown runs – the second with 74 seconds left, to pull C of I within a touchdown. Following the conversion, kicker Kyle Mitchell bounced a quality onside kick – but SOU defensive back Dareion Bell recovered the ball and the Raiders ran out the clock. A week after rushing for just 23 yards, C of I for 192 yards against a stout Raiders defense – with Dominic Garzoli logging his second career 100-yard game, running for 109 yards, including a 77- yard first quarter jaunt that tied the score at 7-7. SOU answered with consecutive touchdown drives, as Quaderius Clemmons scored on a 23-yard run and quarterback Wyatt Hutchinson capping a 14-yard drive with a 14-yard scramble for a score to give the hosts a 21-7 lead. The Yotes cut the margin to 21-14 late in the half on a Peterson 16-yard touchdown pass to Connor Gagain – but SOU got two Marcus Montano field goals – 34-yarder to close the second quarter and a 23- yard kick midway through the third quarter, to extend the lead Peterson's first touchdown run, a 3-yard dash on a 4th-and-1, got the Yotes within 27-21 with 12 minutes to play – but after stopping SOU on consecutive drives, C of I could not capitalize, as a late interception led to a Rey Vega touchdown and the 35-21 lead. C of I held Southern to just 392 yards of total offense – including just 141 yards through the air, as Jayden Dawson picked off two Hutchinson passes. David Ford led the team with 10 tackles, with Forrest Riversadding nine stops. Peterson finished 10-of-18 for 114 yards, adding 44 yards on the ground – but was sacked five times by the Raiders defense. Hunter Juarez had two catches for 37 yards and Keegan Crafton added two grabs for 33 yards to lead the receiving group. Vega was the workhorse for SOU, rushing 24 times for 158 yards, with Hutchinson finishing 17-of-27 for 141 yards and the two picks.
