January 10, 2017 Dear Parents, Welcome back! Happy 2017! I hope everyone had a fantastic winter vacation. Please continue to have your child to school on time at 7:30. It's an early start, but it is very important that we all start together at Move It as a family in the morning. Tolerance is the character trait for the month of January.

Please send your child to school with a coat. It is very chilly in the morning at recess. Also, please be sure to send you child to school appropriately dressed for the weather.Thank you!

If we have a 2 hour delay or school is cancelled, due to weather, I am emailing parents as soon as I hear of it. Also, please check the school website for clarification. Please note that breakfast is NOT served when we have a 2 hour delay, so be sure to feed your child breakfast before school on the delay days, as I had many hungry kiddos come to school on delay days. Please review the following info regarding delays or closures:

Information will be posted / announced as follows:  Delay or closure information will be posted on the District's main website page, on each school's main website page and on the Inclement weather page (under transportation). www.nwasco.k12.or.us  Flashalert (Flashalert.net) will be notified (TV banners - we are listed as North Wasco County Schools).  Information will be posted on Twitter (@NWCSD21).  Information will be posted on Facebook (www.facebook.com/northwascoschools).  Information will be sent to local radio stations (KACI, KODL, KYYT and KIHR).

This month we are talking a lot about civil rights, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Ruby Bridges. Please be sure to ask your child what he or she is learning in regards to this, as we have had many appropriate talks about segregation. It fits perfect with our school character trait “tolerance” this month. Please be sure to let me know if you have any questions.

In regards to our FRESH, PERISHABLE snack, I am sending an email reminder when it is your week. Please let me know if you have any questions in regards to “fresh, perishable” snack contributions. Fresh snack is a perishable snack.

Please return the yellow Teacher/Parent communication folder as soon as possible so I can have it ready for the following week. I have been sending home a “Just-Right” reading book in a manila envelope every Tuesday for your child. The book will be his or her “just right” reading level so that the book can be read each night and recorded on the reading log. Please have your child return the envelope with the book inside the following Tuesday, so that a new book can be sent home. Please let me know if you have any questions. The book is meant to be kept the whole week.

Please remember that any time you are in our school, you need to sign in and out at the office and wear a visitor’s badge. It is part of our safety protocol to know who is in the building in case of an emergency and to identify adults who are not staff in our building. Thank you for following this safety procedure.

We will have gym every Tuesday and Thursday and Performance (music) every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday the during the next trimester. We will also have library each Tuesday.

Ms. Greer’s Math Group News: We are off and running in the new month. We will be talking about equations. We will also focus on the vocabulary, “sum and difference”. We will also start discussing the terms “great/lesser than”. Please note that I am now sending math homework home each Tuesday. It is due the following Tuesday along with the regular reading log. Ms. Greer’s Reading Group News: We will be focusing this month on digraphs. Th, ph, sh, and wh. Please keep working on the sight words that I send home each Tuesday, as 70% of beginning readers books are made up of sight words.

Ms. Greer’s Writer’s Workshop News: We continue to write in our journals each day and have talked about the importance of journaling being about you and having an illustration that matches the entry. We have been really trying to add to our stories and I am now expecting 3 to 4 sentences independently during writing time. We are working on stamina and using the tools we have to be independent writers. I am proud of the growth that the class is making!

As always, If you need to talk to me, please send a note or contact me at school (541-478-3321) or e-mail to the following address: [email protected] Have a wonderful week and thanks for continuing to send your child to school well-rested!
