2 The Cooling Industry Awards 2012 WELCOME Andrew Gaved Editor, RAC

Welcome to the eighth year of the Cooling Industry Awards. Once again within these pages, I am proud to present a snapshot of the cooling industry at its innovative best. Year after year I search for new ways to pay tribute to the industry as it raises the carbon reduction “It is clear that bar ever higher. It doesn’t have the vast scale of the automotive sector or cooling’s high energy the government support of the defence industry, and so the continuing austerity consumption in a time of makes it even harder, yet cooling keeps innovating to what customers and ever-increasing energy regulations – I don’t know which is worse – demand of it. I would encourage you to peruse the range of shortlisted entries at costs is propelling the your leisure, they constitute a veritable treasure-chest of technology and techniques. This year, a strong theme is ‘agility’ as companies have come end-users towards up with solutions in rapid fashion to either meet customer windows or maximise the advantage of new technologies. ever more imaginative Heat recovery, secondary refrigeration, free cooling, high temperature heat pumps – all are being used in new ways to wreak energy savings solutions” and carbon reduction, and, increasingly, to reduce maintenance too. Our judges were pleased with the variety of entries, demonstrating that the quest for lower carbon cooling embraces food service, commercial offi ces, factories and data centres as much as supermarkets. There was also welcome representation from smaller companies – proving that environmental best practice is not the sole preserve of the giants. There were two things that judges felt they weren’t seeing enough of, however. Good data to support company statements – too many relied simply on claims. Secondly, non-retail projects. The judges were adamant that there were excellent projects that weren’t being submitted. Looking through the fi nalists, it is clear that cooling’s high energy consumption in a time of ever-increasing energy costs is propelling the end-users towards ever more imaginative solutions. Crucially, they are also more willing to spend money up front if there is an energy payback. It’s a great climate for innovation. Earlier in the month we held our fi rst Cooling Awards Technology Forum, to discuss the opportunities in developing technology as well as important challenges. It is clear that increased collaboration and knowledge sharing will be key to progress, not least in persuading the government to support the industry. But what an opportunity. If you add energy costs to the very real prospect of carbon penalties in future and a government commitment to incentivising ‘green deals’, it has the making of a perfect storm for cooling. Could we be seeing a golden age for cooling technology?

GOLD AWARD

“Judges praise Bob’s professionalism, knowledge and drive, together with a willingness to take diffi cult decisions”

WINNER Bob Arthur

The Gold Award is given to an individual or team who is judged to have had a signifi cant impact on the cooling industry and its response to the environment. Sometimes that impact has been through the direct application of technology and sometime through infl uencing and advocacy. This year’s winner Bob Arthur has, through a career spanning fi rst 17 years at Prestcold and then 26 years at Marks and Spencer, achieved the distinction of doing both, with a combination of technical development and a willingness to lead colleagues and suppliers to greener solutions. Sometimes moving the industry forward requires serious pushing and Bob, through his presidency of the British Refrigeration Association, for his employer and in industry events has been prepared to ‘tell it like it is’. Judges praise Bob’s ‘professionalism, knowledge and drive, together with a willingness to take diffi cult decisions’. This is encompassed in the recent code of conduct for carbon reduction in retail refrigeration, a document that is testament both to Bob’s vision for a common standard and his infl uence in getting the industry to work together. In the technology sphere, Bob has been a strong advocate of the use of carbon dioxide – M&S is impressively on its fourth generation

of pumped CO2 systems and Bob helped develop the BRA’s CO2 short course. He has also played a key role for his employer’s Plan A campaign, halving refrigeration emissions three years ahead of target. Other achievements include the development of the Brooklands display case – now in its fi fth generation – the technology of which he is himself most proud. This is a fi tting time to recognise Bob’s achievements as he retires from Marks and Spencer. Fortunately, he is not going to be taking a step back. As he takes on more of a consulting role, for the industry it could well be a step forward.

Via online pre-judging and thorough discussion in small and large groups, great lengths are taken to ensure that decisions are fair and democratic. Our judges are key to the process, drawn from a wide cross-section of the industry and selected for their wisdom, experience and integrity. We have more judges than anyone else to maintain this objectivity and this year we added more senior supermarket end users to help expand the retail perspective.

8 The Cooling Industry Awards 2012 THE FRED JAMIESON AWARD FOR INDUSTRY ACHIEVEMENT “Colleagues describe his 40-year cooling career as a ‘love affair’ with the industry, starting as an apprentice engineer and working his way up”

WINNER Alister McLean

This annual award is given in memory of industry legend and Ryan- Jayberg founder Fred Jamieson, and Fred’s son Nick and wife Jackie help to judge the nominations. This category differs from the other awards as it is presented to a person who has demonstrated a career’s worth of achievement in cooling and demonstrated the values associated with Fred’s own career – entrepreneurism, passion and people skills. This year’s winner, Alister McLean, has demonstrated all of the above as managing director of Edinburgh-based contractor Capital Cooling. Since its founding in 1996, Alister has expanded the business to become a national contractor with 150 staff and a £21 million turnover. He easily qualifi es for the description ‘a big personality’, while colleagues and customers describe him as ‘determined’, ‘charismatic’ and ‘inspirational’. Capital Cooling remains a family-run business, and many of its directors have been with it since its inception. This, the company says, is due in no small part to Alister’s leadership and his ‘contagious passion for the industry’. Colleagues describe his 40-year cooling career as a ‘love affair’ with the industry, starting as an apprentice engineer and working his way up. He founded Capital initially to service Edinburgh’s needs but soon expanded, fuelled by a contract with John Menzies and subsequently with a range of blue chip clients. Alister diversifi ed the business beyond contracting to develop multi- deck cabinets and other allied equipment, and was an early adopter of low-carbon technology and natural refrigerants. Since then, he has continued to work on the environmental front with the fi rm, achieving ISO 14001 environmental management and measuring and establishing the fi rm’s own carbon footprint declaration and CSR Report. “Alister mirrors many of my father’s values,” concludes Nick Jamieson.

RETAIL PROJECT OF THE YEAR

HIGHLY COMMENDED Piccadilly Gardens Store Co-operative Group The judges liked the blend of natural refrigerants and heat recovery techniques in this store, and the fact that energy effi ciency measures have addressed both cooling and heating. An R290 hydrocarbon primary chills a glycol mix via a plate heat exchanger to distribute to the cases, fi tted with glycol coils. The cases have full height sliding doors for an up to 40 per cent reduction in case duty, and still don’t require defrost heating the retailers notes, thanks to fully fl ooded coils and higher temperatures. A further heat exchanger on the pack absorbs rejected heat to the store via the glycol circuit. The system qualifi es as a renewable energy source. The use of glycol cuts the store refrigerant charge by 70 per cent to 18 kg – and reduces the risk of leakage – while reducing refrigeration energy by as much as 50 per cent and energy bills by around 30 per cent. FINALISTS Forced free air cooling in supermarket cases Tesco Stores Tesco has done extensive work on the application of ‘pipeless’ display cases, where cold air is ducted into the cases and cold store ceiling WINNER vents, in collaboration with Ultra Refrigeration. Its Marlborough Stanground store by store was able to put the many claimed benefi ts – from a refrigerant charge a fi fth of conventional versions to avoiding the need for case Morrisons and Arctic Circle mechanical parts to eliminating drainage – into action. HIGHLY COMMENDED Brooklands Mark 5 display case SPG and Marks & Spencer The Brooklands case is now on its fi fth generation, but the judges commended SPG for setting out to reinvent the concept on a clean sheet basis. The aim for the Mark 5 was to retain an open design but to approach the performance of ‘the Mark 4 with doors on’. The judges particularly like the use a hybrid refrigeration/air conditioning evaporator offering a larger area of copper tube than the convention, with a smaller diameter. The increased area, together with a hydrophilic coating to minimise the impact of surface water offers very good heat transfer. This, plus new backward curved centrifugal fans, and a dual air curtain has resulted in 12 per cent lower refrigeration duty and a whopping 41 per cent reduction in electrical power consumption over the Mark 4. Evaporating temperature has risen from -7 deg C to -3.5 deg C, reducing the capacity of plant needed to run the cases. REFRIGERATION INNOVATION OF THE YEAR: COMPONENT OR PROCESS

HIGHLY COMMENDED Envirofoam Sustain IFS Chemicals IFS was cited by judges for seeking to improve the environmental performance of a ubiquitous product – insulation foam. Envirofoam Sustain is based on vegetable oils recycled from cooking, replacing conventional non-recyclable polyurethane foams. As well as obvious advantage in sustainable production, and comparable handling to conventional foams, Envirofoam claims superior insulation properties. Further benefi ts include compatibility with low-GWP blowing agents and energy use during production of just 10 per cent of conventional foams. FINALISTS Intelligent Load Shedding RDM RDM’s Intelligent Load Shedding controls monitor the capacity of the refrigeration plant against case load and where there is a disparity automatically shuts down case sections in a controlled fashion. ENVIRONMENTAL PIONEER OF THE YEAR

FINALISTS Chris Playford Chris Playford celebrated his 20th year at Foster Refrigerator this year, rising from design engineer to market and development director. Among the technology developments he has been involved with, he has pioneered the use of hydrocarbons in the Foster refrigerator range. Chris has also been instrumental in developing Foster’s carbon strategy, culminating in the fi rst corporate social responsibility report in the commercial refrigeration sector.

Jon Shipman Jon Shipman started work as a refrigeration contractor in the early 1990s but it is for his work on ‘leak free’ connections that he is cited here. Jon started working with copper connections but quickly became convinced of the advantages of aluminium, in carbon savings, weight and install time. Since 2007, he has researched and refi ned the process, launching the new refl ok product in September last year. An installation has been running in a Co-operative store without leaks for more than six months.

Sean Allison-Burnham WINNER As technical director of Cooler Recycling Solutions (CRS), Sean Allison-Burnham has done pioneering work on the recycling of large Chris Green commercial refrigerators. Notably Sean has achieved a system that Green by name and by nature, Chris Green leads Arctic Circle’s can recover the foam blowing agents from large display cases. He is on the steering group for the BRA on its guide to fl ammable refrigerants and has helped develop hydrocarbon chillers, carbon dioxide refrigeration, heat recovery systems and glycol equipment, to name but four. One of his key roles is to work with consultants to deliver sustainable solutions from the full suite of cooling and heating, aka ‘thermal solutions’. Described by colleagues as a ‘very positive role model’, judges were particularly impressed at the way he has come up through the ranks – he started on the tools at 16 and by 24 he was still learning – winning RAC Student of the Year in 2007 while doing a day release mechanical engineering degree. They also noted his impressive customer testimonials that praise a ‘dynamic and skilled engineer, which is all too rare in this industry”.

THE RAC CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR

HIGHLY COMMENDED A1R Services The judges wanted to send a clear message to the industry that smaller companies can achieve environmental credentials to be proud of with the decision to highly commend A1R, the smallest entrant in the fi eld. The Hertfordshire company has 12 employees but it supplied an impressive resume ‘punching above its weight’. Among the notables were the fact that all its workforce are signed up for hydrocarbon training, a commitment to paperless service records and a high standard of F-Gas management. Working on contracts including NHS trusts, industrial sites and ambulance fl eet maintenance, A1R has achieved excellent customer testimonials too. “A great range of work for a small company,” judges concluded. FINALISTS WR Refrigeration Regular fi nalist WR had initiatives a-plenty to offer again this year, with its fl agship HFO/HC/CO2 Training Academy recognised elsewhere. Other achievements include a National Apprenticeship scheme, the launch of WR Electrical and the winning of signifi cant new business. Judges noted there had been a real culture change at the fi rm and WINNER predicted further success in years to come. Space Engineering Services

Capital Cooling The competition to be voted top RAC contractor is always hard-fought Another regular fi nalist, Capital Cooling again caught the judges’ and this year saw a repeat of last year’s battle of the big national players, eye with consistent work, particularly on glass door chillers and hydrocarbon integrals with the Co-operative Group. This year Capital with WR and Space Engineering again going head to head, initiative has also launched a national air conditioning operation, to add to its for initiative. But judges were also pleased to see a number of smaller already broad offering encompassing service, installation, cabinets players entering the fray, showing that scale is not essential to showing and coldrooms. progress in environmental matters. In the end, Space Engineering was awarded its second title in a Ceilite Airconditioning row, a rare accolade in the Cooling Awards, for the sheer diversity of Ceilite was another fi rm that impressed the judges as ‘a small company doing the right thing’ – even extending to achieving Investors developments it had on offer. M&B engaged suppliers Climate Center and GEA Searle to provide a more energy effi cient cellar cooler across their estate. The result, a version of the Beermaster cellar- cooling product featuring free-cooling, was extensively fi eld tested and monitored across 12 trial installations. But then M&B felt it had seen enough to order a further 469 units across the estate. The normal development cycle was halved to eight months to take early advantage of the free-cooling savings. In practice, the new cooler delivers typical energy savings of around 30 per cent, and a £400 per year saving, providing a 1.7 year payback, based on the trials in 12 sites. “Potential for the whole of that industry,” said the judges.

LOW CARBON ACHIEVEMENT OF THE YEAR

HIGHLY COMMENDED Co-operative Group Piccadilly Gardens The judges praised the company for blazing a trail on fi tting glass doors to chillers, ignoring objections on merchandising grounds. It is also not afraid to apply effi ciency techniques and technology to smaller store formats. The Piccadilly Gardens store typifi es these traits, with a hydrocarbon/glycol refrigeration system with heat recovery providing a 30 per cent winter energy cut with a mere 18 kg refrigerant charge.

Tesco Stores and Engynius Glass door project Tesco and Engynius worked on a major freezer cabinet retrofi t across the UK estate, which saw 44,000 doors replaced with the Eliminaator door, together with 10,000 cabinet frames. Tesco says the annual saving from the project is 57.4 GWh with a carbon saving of 33,300 tonnes. Eliminating door heating via the patent ‘warm edge technology’ of the glass structure, together with reduced perimeter heat, saves around 60 per cent over conventional glass doors.

NATIONAL RETAILER OF THE YEAR

HIGHLY COMMENDED Asda Asda’s SMART strategy – standing for simple, measurable, achievable, repeatable technology – was widely praised by the judges for its thoroughness. Where others have committed to widespread pursuit of alternative refrigerants, Asda has opted to focus on improved engineering, better design and installation and new componentry to cut leakage and reduce carbon. Refrigeration energy consumption for a new store is now half of its 2005 baseline and leakage is now at 2.6 per cent – down from 22 per cent. And all the while, the store is piloting new techniques, from ducted air cabinets to, shortly, HFO refrigeration. FINALISTS Co-operative Group The Co-operative this year impressed the judges with a range of imaginative installations and the success of its bold carbon cutting strategy. From Archimedean screws to glycol circuits to extensive glass door fi tting, the retailer has achieved a massive energy reduction of 12 GWh a year across its estate. And its head offi ce, cited elsewhere, WINNER looks set to provide another cooling benchmark. Sainsbury’s supermarkets

The retailer’s willingness to experiment in the cause of lower carbon the battle to take place on a level playing fi eld. It didn’t make the judges’ cooling was praised by the judges. job any easier though and the category saw the most intense debate as the relative merits of Asda’s ongoing carbon and leak reduction plans were pitted against Sainsbury’s carbon dioxide refrigeration strategy. Ultimately the garlands went to Sainsbury’s, for a combination of its bravery in committing to a very ambitious carbon dioxide rollout, its diversity of engineering innovation and the depth of its carbon cutting. The Sainsbury’s refrigeration strategy is bold as it is a key part of the retailer’s wider ambitions, which include a goal of a 30 per cut in operational carbon by 2020 and 50 per cent absolute carbon reduction by 2050. This year, there has been rapid progress towards both these goals and the other not inconsiderable target of a switch to natural refrigerants across the entire estate by 2030. The numbers are impressive – by February this year, the retailer had notched up 100 carbon dioxide stores,

running 211 packs on CO2. The rate and reliability was so successful that

company has now ratcheted up its 2014 target from 135 CO2 stores to a massive 250.

At the same time, it has reduced physical footprint for CO2 plant by 18 per cent in two years, it has cut steel use by 1.8 tonnes per store, and it has cut plant capital cost by 5 per cent. But Sainsbury’s has not stopped there – it has also pioneered use of geothermal techniques – due to be rolled out to 100 more stores; is working on integration of cooling and heating; and is installing anaerobic digesters on site for food waste. As the retailer says: “Our ambition is to be innovation hunters.”
