JǂǏǖǂǓǚ 27, 2019 • 3ǓDž SǖǏDžǂǚ NJǏ OǓDžNJǏǂǓǚ TNJǎdž Welcoming Father Tolton

“He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him.” — John 1: 11

This Thursday, 7:00 pm at St. Church, we have a most special event: the perfor- mance of the one-man play Tolton: From Slave to Priest. We see how the above verse from John, which of course refers to Jesus, can quite aptly be applied to Augustus Tolton.

Tolton was born a slave and baptized Catholic in in 1854. After his father fled to join the Union Army in the Civil War, Augustus, his mother, and his two siblings escaped across the Mississippi to Quincy, in our diocese, which was then headquar- tered in Alton. Growing up in Quincy, Augustus dis- cerned a vocation to the priesthood and, since no U.S. seminary would accept a black student, he lived in for seven years at the University of the Propa- gation of the Faith.

Augustus thought he would be sent to Africa to work. Just before his priesthood in 1886, the cardinal in charge of the Propagation of the Faith decided that the needed to see a black priest. Therefore he sent Father Tolton to his home diocese — our diocese. (The United States was

considered “mission” territory at that time.) Readings for the Week of January 27, 2019

In our current age, so-called the “information” age, we see and hear a LOT of words. And when we hear Please Pray For All The Sick, Especially: or read the Scriptures, I think that our tendency is to Naiade Heinemann, Mae Grapperhaus, think of them only as more mere “words,” among so Dorothy Holshouser, Nancy Varda Smith, many others, rather than as the Word.
