MONTEBELLO People, Places, & Events Follow us on facebook www.MontebelloReporter.com VOL. 7 NO.4 APRIL 2021 GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND Montebello resident and Boy Scout Ram Alen Garcia dedicates Eagle Scout project to Beverly Hospital’s Frontline Heroes

After learning about the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) shortage from numerous articles, media outlets, and his own mother, Ram Alen Garcia was inspired to take action and to help his local frontline heroes. He decided to start crafting face shields by hand. He made his first donation of face shields to Beverly Hospital back in April of 2020. But he knew there was more he could do.

Ram, a member of Boy Scout Troop 476, was preparing for his Eagle Scout project late 2020. When it came to selecting the beneficiary, he chose Beverly Hospital because he felt in his heart the desire to help healthcare heroes come home safely. “This project is one that meant a lot to me, because I think a lot about my mom when she leaves the house to go to work, and I constantly worry about what will happen to her there,” said Ram, “(I think about the) front- liners who leave their own families to protect others. I wanted to help protect them so they can return to their families happy and healthy.”

After receiving project approval, the boy scout set out to raise the much needed funds on GoFundMe. Within 14 hours, his fundraiser received nearly tripled the requested amount. After receiving the funds, he taught and enlisted the help of his fellow boy scouts for creating quality face shields. The project was complet- ed within a week! The young leader presented 410 handcrafted face shields, a multitude of snacks, and a monetary donation to Beverly Hospital on March 10, 2021.

MONTEBELLO REPORTER 6 Community APRIL 2021 REMEMBERING LOVED ONES LOST TO COVID-19 By David N. Torres Montebello Mayor Pro Tem

I got a message from Lynwood Mayor Marisela Santana inviting our city to participate in a regional remembrance of community members we have lost to #COVID19. Unbeknownst to me, several of my colleagues also received and relayed various messages to city administration. In short order staff was able to coordinate the event complete with luminaries, #MontebelloStrong lettering, and a program to fit the heaviness of the occasion. Pastor Eric Tietze of Heart of Compassion led our invocation, and our colleague Councilmember Jimenez led us in Amor Eterno and Amazing Grace, and we observed 2 minutes of silence to remember the grim milestone of almost 200 lives lost in our own city.

The pandemic has been both close to home and a far ways off. As the death toll continues to rise we hope and pray that no one close to us is affected. I myself have had a few scares that prompted testing, and came to realize just how dangerous day to day life could be. The pandemic reached my front door when, in the last few months, my family lost a beloved uncle and a longtime family.

We will see a change in risk level tier soon. As venues open and sports resume, as life makes steps returning back to normal, please remember the threat of spread is still very present and new strains are good cause to stay vigilant. Wear a mask, practice social distancing, and wash your hands regularly. #stopthespread

I'd like to thank Mayor Santana for reaching out to me, our Mayor for ensuring Montebello could hold this event, and city staff for their hard work and dedication to honor our victims.

In remembrance of Jose Cano and Bea Garcia.

MONTEBELLO REPORTER APRIL 2021 Ask An Attorney 7 SPRING CLEANING YOUR ESTATE Gia L Pacheco, Esq. The Law Offices of George B. Pacheco & Associates

The spring season officially began on March 20th and if you are like most people you have engaged in the annual ritual known as, “spring cleaning.” There is nothing like the refreshing feeling of a decluttered home to make you feel organized and clean. A good practice to add to your annual cleanse is a review of your estate plan or following through with your resolution to create your estate plan.

There are many significant life changes and family issues that may have an impact on how you feel about distributing your property after death. Many create their estate plan and either forget or do not realize that they may need to update certain clauses or look for changes in the laws. For example, you may have already given your son his inter-vivos (during lifetime) share for a down payment on his family home and intended to provide for him during his lifetime. Another example is where one child has predeceased the parents -does that child’s share past to his or her heirs? So, it is one thing to create your estate plan but it is better practice to revisit it often because some either forget or do not realize that they may need to update certain clauses or look for changes in the laws.

When taking the first steps, the most common question people ask is: how do I revise my estate plan?

First, estate planning is a process where you arrange how to dispose of your estate upon death and leave instructions for disbursement. It can be done by a will or a setting up a living trust. For the purposes of this article, I will use the living trust as an example. Most properly drafted living trusts have an amendment and revocation clause to account for desired changes by the Settlor/Trustor of the trust. This is the legal term for the “owner” of the trust. Both the will and trust may be amended during your lifetime. Both the will and trust may be amended during your lifetime.

Amendments and Revocation Life changes and major family events can change how you wish to distribute your property. It is wise to revisit your estate plan every year or within a reasonable amount of time. When you change your trust it is called a “trust amendment”. It is slightly easier to execute. Usually one amends their trust when he or she wants to change or add benefi- ciaries, change disposition of assets in the trust, or change trustees. A typical amendment to a living trust must be in writing and delivered to the trustee. The amendment will be valid as long as you follow the formalities of execution carefully.

Revocation of a trust is a little more complicated because the legal title of the trust property must to be transferred back to the owner. It is not wise to write on, strike out or hashtag any of your original documents.

Codicil An amendment to a will is called a “codicil”. It is made with the same formalities as a when executing the will. There is certain language that is necessary to reference the original will. A revocation of a will can be done by this codicil or a new will that has language expressly revoking other wills.

As mentioned before, every situation is different and will require a thorough analysis of your estate and your objectives. It is wise to consult with an experienced attorney when deciding to amend or revoke your estate plan. Happy spring!

MONTEBELLO REPORTER APRIL 2021 Health 9 PUTTING YOUR “BEST FOOT FORWARD” DURING FOOT HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH Center encourages patients to take care of their feet, offering key tips The staff at Beverly Hospital’s Center for Advanced Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine is encouraging patients to put their ‘best foot forward’ during Foot Health Awareness month by following a few simple healthy feet tips.

According to Webmd.com, Americans walk approximately 75,000 miles by the time they reach age 50. Good foot health ensures that patients can continue to log miles and set themselves up for long term mobility and well-being. Our healthcare providers recommend that patients routinely inspect their feet and monitor their nutrition, as issues with diabetes and obesity impact the feet. Other ways patients can keep their feet healthy include:

• Keeping feet clean. Wash with soap and warm water; rinse well and pat dry • Not wearing shoes without socks or stockings • Not walking barefoot • Wearing properly fitted shoes • Trimming toenails regularly • Not using over-the-counter remedies for corns • Avoiding extreme temperatures • Applying moisturizer regularly

SHOPS AT MONTEBELLO RECEIVE PROPERTY TEAM OF YEAR, MOST INNOVATIVE EVENT AWARDS

By Anne Donofrio-Holter Contributing Writer

For its innovative programs, along with an agile leader- ship team with an ability to adapt during these unprece- dented times, Pacific Retail Capital Partners awarded The Shops at Montebello its Property Team of the Year Award and its Most Innovative Event (The Montebello Chalk Walk) Award.

“As COVID-19 made its way across the globe, Los Ange- les would see some of the country’s most stringent regu- lations,” said Marina Satoafaiga, The Shops at Montebel- lo Marketing & Business Development Manager. “Our team worked closely with the LA County Public Health Department to ensure compliance and in some cases inform best practices. We did our best with each curve- ball and came out on the other side a stronger team.”

Selected by the Pacific Retail Capital Partners’ corporate executive team and based on measurable impact and results achieved, both awards recognize team achieve- ment, with the Most Innovative Event Award specific to The Shops at Montebello Marketing Department.

One of the first local events held at the onset of the pandemic, The Montebello Chalk Walk, took place in the Shops’ parking lot last May.

“This event was both a fundraiser to benefit the Montebello-Commerce YMCA’s food distribution efforts as well as an opportunity for families to safely get out and partake in a creative way to give back,” said Satoafaiga. “Those interested could sponsor a designated space in our parking lot for his or her chalk design.”

The fundraiser, hosted over a two-day period, attracted local artists, city officials and others interested not only in showing their creative side and having some fun, but in benefitting a worthy cause while doing so. Many of the chalk designs promoted positivity, community, and hope during these unprecedented times.

“NINICO Communications and the Montebello Reporter sponsored 22 spaces allowing those who otherwise could not afford to participate an opportunity to do so,” said Satoafaiga. “The event also landed the editorial cover page on Ancillary Magazine.”

According to Satoafaiga, as a result of the event The Shops at Montebello and the City of Montebello were able to raise $4,500 for the Montebello-Commerce YMCA.

“These two awards would not have been possible without community support,” said Satoafaiga. “Community continues be at the center of our core values. This past year was rough, but when we are able to come together, memorable Montebello moments are made.”

YMCA 2021 GALA – SAVE THE DATE - NOVEMBER 5TH! This November the YMCA will honor Lucik Gabriel at our 35th Annual Gala with the theme of “Creating New Light Together.” The Y will return to the Jonathan Club for their second year, back by popular demand following a wonderfully fun and successful Y Gala held here in 2019 honoring Steve & Irene Simonian. This past year has been one of unique challenges related to the scourge of COVID-19, and YMCA Board Chairwoman- Ms. Gabriel, supported the Y’s efforts from the very beginning, both volunteering in our food distribution lines alongside of numerous other community members, and also by donating the services of Gabriel Container to ship non-perishable food products from the Superior Grocers warehouse to the YMCA from April through to the present.

The nimble pivot of the YMCA in a pandemic year called for the Y to offer new, emergency relief services to help our community and also called for new levels of fund raising under the able leadership of the Y Board Chair. Of course, this followed years of creative, energetic leadership by Lucik Gabriel who is the driving force for many Y special events ranging from Gala to our annual Kids To Camp event which enables every child who wishes to benefit from the positive experience of camp to have financial assistance available to get to camp for the transformative experience that is YMCA summer camp. Recent months have found the Y providing emergency relief services ranging from food distribution that approaches 150,000 meals as of April, 2021, to the Y hosting partnerships around free drive through flu shots, free mobile mammograms, blood drives, drive through Christmas Toy distributions, and free wi-fi in the Y parking lot for remote learning, tele-med, and job searches.

If you wish to celebrate the luminescent leadership that this amazing community leader has provided, as well as that of the Gabriel family’s three generations of leadership without whom the YMCA may not be in Montebello to do all the good Y mission work in our community, please contact the Y Director, Paul Parzik, about Gala Sponsorship opportunities or about getting on our mail list to purchase tickets as soon as they are available.

MONTEBELLO REPORTER APRIL 2021 Community 15 MONTEBELLO’S ONLY BREWERY PIVOTING TO HANG ON By Pamela Chan Haviland Friend of Angry Horse Brewing

If ‘hanging in there” has been the universal life lesson during the pandemic, Nate McCusker knows it better than anyone. A year ago, he saw his craft brewing business, Angry Horse Brewing, growing and the future was looking bright. “We had the equivalent of six full-time staff and were looking to open up more taprooms,” said McCusker. It all came to a screeching halt with the first AND second lockdowns and now McCusker is doing all he can to stay afloat. He has pivoted enough times to make one’s head spin and says the current restrictions on breweries and bars are not sustainable if the hope is to have local watering holes around when restrictions are lifted.

Breweries are only allowed to open in LA county if they sell food. So McCusker has partnered with numerous catering companies and food trucks to provide customers a meal and a craft beer on Angry Horse’s patio. The rules require him to ring it all up as one Point of Sale so now he’s worried that on paper, it looks like he is doing much better than he is. “If I am collecting $10 for a meal, it’s a wash because I turn around and give that $10 to the food company. But it’s all on my books and might affect me for Covid relief or possibly at tax time”, says McCusker.

For this past year, Angry Horse and McCusker have been doing all they can to stick to their values as a true community partner. For the first few months, McCusker continued to hire the local bands that would usually play live in the brewery. He offered up their concerts as free livestreams and the response was phenomenal. When restaurants were allowed to re-open, the interest fell off. When his customers told him they would love it if he could sell basic groceries so they wouldn’t have to brave the stores, McCusker arranged with local vendors, took on-line orders and brought the groceries out to cars. He did not upcharge the items so it was essentially a courtesy service. He also teamed up with other local businesses and former mayor, Salvador Melendez, to procure enough turkeys and fixings for 132 Thanksgiving meals. The meal boxes went as quickly as people could sign up for them. The hardships are real. McCusker says he experienced an attempted break in and his company van was stolen. Crime was not an issue before the pandemic.

This is just the story of one local, small business in a time of global pain. But the struggles can be amplified across the city, state, country and world. McCusker is confident he could weather the remainder of the Covid storm if LA county would remove the food requirement for breweries and allow tables at the CDC recommended guideline of 6 feet distanced instead of the current 8. He can only fit 11 tables on his patio, one in which he invested $6,000 to expand, light and wire for music. He is in regular contact with other local breweries that can't even afford to open with the food service requirement. As for McCusker’s former employees, they have all found other jobs. But most of them are not working in food or hospitality. “This industry is simply not sustainable,” McCusker said. What a sad post-Covid world this will be if this is

LUNCH RAISED SPIRITS AT BEVERLY HOSPITAL On Tuesday, March 16, a free lunch was provided to all the employees at Beverly Hospital thanks to a coor- dinated effort by Les Fujimoto and Betty Peralta of the Beverly Hospital Foundation with Teresa Lopez of Montebello Blue Hearts. The event was a great success and raised the spirits of all those who attended. This meal was provided to the employees in appreciation for their long hours and dedication during the latest COVID-19 pandemic surge. Their continuing dedication and sacrifice is truly appreciated by the com- munity and patients they serve.

City Councilwoman Angie Jimenez and Councilman Salvador Melendez also readily donated their time and money to help make the meals available. During the meal distribution, Commissioner James J. Santana donated his time to help with the meal preparation.

“Thanks to the Healthcare workers of Beverly Hospital for their heroic service presented during the pandemic.”, said Teresa Lopez.

“Beverly Hospital employees have all been such a positive example of how we are ‘stronger together’, we are Montebello Strong!”, said Betty Peralta.

Members of Soroptimist International of Montebello also contributed to the donations collected, recognizing that there is still a need to remember our frontline workers and appreciate their sacrifice to the community. Small business, Dolores’ Tacos followed the hospital’s COVID-19 guidelines in safely serving delicious hot meals to the hospital employees.
