Overview Friday
OVERVIEW This year’s Breeders’ Cup races are at Santa Anita in southern California. The highlight may be the showdown between the highest earning horse in American history, California Chrome, and Arrogate who ran one of the fast races ever in winning the Travers in the BC Classic. But Friday’s Distaff is pretty exciting also with unbeaten three year old Songbird facing Beholder and Stellar Wind. There’s also the Mile on Saturday in which superstar filly Tepin tries to beat males for the second year in a row. The Turf, also on Saturday, has the filly that won the prestigious Arc in Paris last month facing top males including some pretty good ones from America. I’m going to list my top contenders, in order, for each race. The horses listed are the ones I think have a strong shot of winning. In many cases the best bet may not be the top horse. Longshots win in the BC all the time and its worth going after a few price plays. My preferred wagers are daily doubles and pick threes in which I advise using all of my listed horses in each race. These picks are made before any races are run. I will be flexible and so should you. If one trainer’s horses are over- or under-achieving, move the rest up or down. If the track seems to be biased toward a particular running style that has to be factored in as well. In other words, I might change my mind but the picks here won’t be able to be updated. -

Classic Form Runs Deep in World
SATURDAY, 26 MARCH 2016 GRENDISAR TOO GOOD IN EASTER CLASSIC CLASSIC FORM RUNS A true stalwart of the all-weather scene by now, Grendisar (Ire) DEEP IN WORLD CUP (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) followed up his win in the G3 Winter Derby Feb. 27 in Friday’s Coral Easter Classic on Good Friday to confirm that he is a force to be reckoned with now that his arch-nemesis Tryster (Ire) (Shamardal) is playing away in Dubai. Always well positioned by Adam Kirby in mid-division, the bay allowed Metropol (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) first run in the straight, but cut down that French raider inside the last half-furlong for another major payday. “He’s a proper racehorse and has never been in better form, so is a credit to his trainer,” his jockey said, while Marco Botti revealed that a summer break is probably on the cards now. “We were confident with his form, as he looked great but you never know and luckily it panned out well with a nice genuine pace all the way,” his trainer said. “He deserved to win a big race like this and seems to enjoy it around Lingfield on this surface, so we’ve found the key to him.” Cont. p2 California Chrome and Alan Sherman at Meydan Friday | DRC/Mathea Kelley No matter what way you look at it, the American contingent MO TOM AIMS TO REBOUND IN LA DERBY forms an imposing presence in the $10-million G1 Dubai World GIII LeComte S. winner Mo Tom (Uncle Mo) anchors the Cup, the world’s richest horse race that will celebrate its 21st GII TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds Saturday. -

Espinoza, Victor (HOF 2017): Born: May 23, 1972 From: Mexico City, Mexico
Espinoza, Victor (HOF 2017): Born: May 23, 1972 From: Mexico City, Mexico. Born on a dairy farm in Hidalgo, Mexico, the 11th of 12 children. He grew up riding horses and when he was 17 paid for Jockey School by driving a bus in Mexico City—that was 1989 (Quote: “It’s a lot easier riding horses than driving in that traffic in Mexico City.”). He shifted his tack North of the border all the way up to Northern CA in 1994 and, while he spoke no English when he arrived in the United States he managed to be the leading apprentice rider at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields. In 1995 he began riding in Southern CA. His first big win was in the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Distaff aboard Spain and then in 2002 he won his first of 3 Derbies and first Preakness Stakes (both aboard War Emblem). Espinoza is not married and he has no children. He donates 10% of his earnings to “City of Hope” to support pediatric cancer research. In 2015, Espinoza earned his second straight Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes victory aboard American Pharoah and was finally able accomplish something he had failed to do in 2014 (California Chrome) and 2002 (War Emblem) – he won the Triple Crown. When he crossed the finish line first in the Belmont Stakes, American Pharoah became the 12th Triple Crown winner in history and the first in 37 years. In 2015 he won his second ESPY Award for Best Jockey after also winning in 2002. Inducted into the National Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2017—3rd year in a row to be nominated. -
