Black Sea Biogeochemistry Analysis and Forecast

Product upgrade: This product will replace BLKSEA_ANALYSIS_FORECAST_BIO_007_009.

This product is the nominal product for the BS-BIO NRT system based on NEMO- BAMHBI online coupled. It provides analysis and forecast for 3D concentration of chlorophyll, nutrients (nitrate and phosphate), dissolved oxygen, phytoplankton carbon biomass, net primary production, pH, dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, and for 2D fields of bottom oxygen concentration (for the North-Western shelf), surface partial pressure of CO2 and surface flux of CO2.

Variable names: there are new variables which complete the product catalogue. They are:  Nitrate  Phosphate  Phytoplankton Carbon Biomass  Chlorophyll  Net Primary Production  Dissolved Oxygen (3D field and bottom value on the shelf)  Dissolved Inorganic Carbon  Surface partial pressure of CO2  Surface CO2 flux  Alkalinity  pH

Each variable constituting the BS-BIO NRT datasets is updated every day. The system provides, for the above list of variables, 1-day hindcast and 10-days forecast; once a week, the system is run in analysis mode, producing 10-days analysis, 1-day hindcast and 10-days forecast. Datasets are provided as monthly and daily means. Resolution updates: horizontal spatial resolution is increased, from about 5km to about 3km, aligned to BS-PHY NRT product. In the vertical, the product goes from 40 vertical levels to 31 levels. Note that the old system also had 31 computing levels, but these (sigma levels) were interpolated on 40 z-levels. Forcing updates: ECMWF forcing fields are now centered at noon. It implies that the BLKSEA_ANALYSIS_FORECAST_BIO_007_010 will be computed consequently: daily means fields will be centered at 12:00 UTC. Format update: Files are in NetCDF4 format.

Product upgrade: 1- Improved processing for long (typically with peak wavelength larger than 400m), whose direction is often wrongly estimated. A dedicated processing is proposed to properly estimate the wave direction and add these observations in the L3 (rejected before).

2- An additional dataset format is released. Instead of grouping the wave observations according to the swell field they belong to, they are grouped according to their observation time in 3-hour time steps files. This file format does not replace the previous one. It is proposed in order to facilitate the ability to find the observations at a given time (eg. Assimilation purpose). Otherwise, observations can be split over more than a week in a single swell event.
