MAGIS AWARD

Mike Moroski

In the 10 years since he graduated, Michael Moroski has established himself as a passionate advocate of the poor in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, as well as an inspiring mentor to students at Moeller High School.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts in English, Moroski accepted a teaching position at Moeller, where he has not only instructed his students on the finer points of grammar, but taught them a lesson he learned at Xavier—how to become men for others.

While volunteering as a chaperone for a group of students who were restoring buildings so the poor would have a place to live, he had his own heart touched by the experience. He soon found himself in solidarity with the area’s poor, fighting against injustice on their behalf and striving to find ways to make their lives better.

He created a student group called MACH 1—Moeller Advocates for Community Housing—that would return each weekend and restore the housing, and he led weekend retreats that addressed issues such as homelessness, government regulations and the bureaucratic and pragmatic concerns surrounding affordable housing in Cincinnati.

For exemplifying the Jesuit ideals of enhancing the humanity of the poor, improving the world through education and being a man for others, Xavier University is proud to present Michael Moroski with the 2011 Magis Award.

23 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD

John C. Lechleiter

There are many people all over the world who owe John Lechleiter a debt of gratitude for improving their quality of life. And they may not even know his name. As chairman, president and chief executive officer of the Eli Lilly Co., Lechleiter is responsible for the innovation and development of a wide range of pharmaceutical products that not only improve lives but also serve as the answer to some of the world’s most urgent medical needs—cancer, diabetes, neurological issues.

Three years ago Lechleiter took over as chairman of Lilly, the world’s 10th largest pharmaceutical company, at one of its most challenging times. In that short time, though, he has established a clear vision for future growth using both the leadership skills he’s developed on his way up the corporate ladder and the scientific knowledge he’s gained from his education and from three decades in the world of chemistry.

After earning his bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Xavier in 1975, Lechleiter went on to become a National Science Foundation Fellow at Harvard University, where he received both his master’s and doctorate degrees in organic chemistry. He joined Lilly in 1979 as a senior organic chemist and became head of the company’s process research and development division in three years. In 1984, he moved to Windlesham, England, to serve as director of pharmaceutical product development for the Lilly Research Centre in the United Kingdom.

He returned to the United States in 1986 as manager of research and development projects for Europe and quickly began his corporate ascent. He was promoted four times in six years and moved into the corporate ranks as vice president of pharmaceutical product development in 1993. He was appointed vice president of regulatory affairs in 1994, vice president for development and regulatory affairs in 1996, senior vice president of pharmaceutical products in 1998, executive vice president for pharmaceutical products and corporate development in 2001 and executive vice president for pharmaceutical operations in 2004.

In 2005, he was named president and chief operating officer and joined Lilly’s board of directors. He became chief executive officer and chairman of the board in 2008.

Over the years, Lechleiter has willingly shared his expertise and wisdom with a number of organizations. In addition to sitting on the board of trustees at Xavier, he is on the board of Nike, the United Way Worldwide, the Life Sciences Foundation and several others. He is a Director of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, as well as the Great Lakes Chemical Corporation, and he is a member of the American Chemical Society, Business Roundtable, Business Council and the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee.

In recognition of his outstanding service to the University and society, and his commitment to Jesuit values, Xavier University is honored to present John C. Lechleiter with its Distinguished Alumnus Award.

24 PAUL O’CONNOR, S.J. LEADERSHIP AWARD

Roger A. Fortin

Like all great history professors, Roger Fortin has the ability to engage his students in the details and drama of some worldly event as if he had been there as a personal witness. And like all great administrators, Fortin has the ability to listen, learn and lead. For the last 45 years, Xavier has been the beneficiary of this rare combination of skills.

Fortin came to Xavier in 1966 as an assistant professor of history. He had earned his bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from St. Francis College in his native Maine and his master’s degree in history from the University of New Hampshire, and was still earning his doctorate in American history from Lehigh University.

Known for pacing back and forth in the room, peppering students with questions, Fortin energetically taught and enlightened the minds of students on subjects such as the American Revolution or U. S. Intellectual History, being named Teacher of the Year in 1972 and earning the Outstanding Faculty Award in 1974. He quickly moved up the ranks to associate professor and professor, and served as department chair for eight years. During his ascent, he was introduced to the administrative side of the University by Frank Brennan, S.J., and he unselfishly stepped in and out of the classroom throughout his career to fill such needed roles as academic vice president, dean of Edgecliff College and director of the library. In 2001 he became the University’s first and only provost.

Always the historian, Fortin spent his off-hours researching and writing a long list of articles and publications, including Faith and Action: A History of the Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati, 1821-1996, and Xavier’s official historical book of record, To See Great Wonders: A History of Xavier University, 1831- 2006. He also shared his love of history with others as the main speaker at 18 regional conferences sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Association for State and Local Histories during the 1970s. He also co-produced and participated in more than 50 educational television programs.

Outside of his work at Xavier, Fortin has served as director of the project to renovate the Historic Cincinnati Fire House Museum, as a board member of the Greater Cincinnati chapter of the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Foundation and as a director of the St. Xavier High School’s Masterwork Study Project.

In recognition of his 45 years of focused dedication to Xavier University and its mission as well as his wisdom, leadership and tireless work in developing the academic lives of countless students, Xavier University is proud to present Roger Fortin with the Paul L. O’Connor, S.J., Leadership Award.

25 HONORARY DEGREE CITATION

Charles Geschke

From a young age, Charles Geschke was strongly influenced by the Jesuit priests who guided his education. And as he advanced through his career as co-founder and chairman of Adobe Systems Inc., those lessons of his early life never left him. Rather than trying to codify a collection of rules of conduct for his employees, for instance, he invoked just one rule—the Golden Rule. It has proven to be an excellent business principle, he says, helping him steer Adobe from a start-up to a $3 billion-a-year business with offices worldwide. The company has been voted one of the best companies in America to work for, the second most-admired software company in America and one of the most generous companies in America for its donations.

A Cleveland native, Geschke earned a bachelor’s degree in classics and a master’s degree in mathematics from Xavier and began teaching math at John Carroll University before being drawn into the burgeoning world of computer science. He left teaching to earn a doctorate in computer science from Carnegie-Mellon University, and then took that knowledge to Xerox PARC’s Computer Sciences Laboratory where he was a principal scientist and researcher.

There he met John Warnock, and the pair invented the software that sparked the desktop publishing revolution. Forming Adobe in 1982—naming the company after a creek that ran behind Warnock’s home—the two have forever transformed how people create, process and engage with information.

As a result of his innovative spirit, he has received numerous professional recognitions. In 2008 he was awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation by President Barack Obama. He won the Marconi Society Award for scientific contributions to human progress in the field of information technology. He was named the national Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003, and ranked the seventh most influential graphics person of the last millennium by Graphic Exchange magazine in 2000. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the Computer History Museum.

Alongside his professional accomplishments, Geschke has served the community in a broad range of roles, including membership on the boards of the San Francisco Symphony, National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management and the Nantucket Boys and Girls Clubs, among others. He has also served as a longtime member of Xavier’s President’s Advisory Council, providing immeasurable guidance and help in keeping Xavier on the forefront of technology and development. He and his wife, Nan, continue to be generous supporters of Xavier, most recently establishing the Nan and Charles Geschke Terrace in the Conaton Learning Commons.

In recognition of his vision, his impact around the world, his openness to new ideas and his willingness to give generously of himself, Xavier University is honored to present Charles Geschke with the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

PAUL O’CONNOR, S.J. LEADERSHIP AWARD

Roger A. Fortin

Like all great history professors, Roger Fortin has the ability to engage his students in the details and drama of some worldly event as if he had been there as a personal witness. And like all great administrators, Fortin has the ability to listen, learn and lead. For the last 45 years, Xavier has been the beneficiary of this rare combination of skills.

Fortin came to Xavier in 1966 as an assistant professor of history. He had earned his bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from St. Francis College in his native Maine and his master’s degree in history from the University of New Hampshire, and was still earning his doctorate in American history from Lehigh University.

Known for pacing back and forth in the room, peppering students with questions, Fortin energetically taught and enlightened the minds of students on subjects such as the American Revolution or U. S. Intellectual History, being named Teacher of the Year in 1972 and earning the Outstanding Faculty Award in 1974. He quickly moved up the ranks to associate professor and professor, and served as department chair for eight years. During his ascent, he was introduced to the administrative side of the University by Frank Brennan, S.J., and he unselfishly stepped in and out of the classroom throughout his career to fill such needed roles as academic vice president, dean of Edgecliff College and director of the library. In 2001 he became the University’s first and only provost.

Always the historian, Fortin spent his off-hours researching and writing a long list of articles and publications, including Faith and Action: A History of the Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati, 1821-1996, and Xavier’s official historical book of record, To See Great Wonders: A History of Xavier University, 1831- 2006. He also shared his love of history with others as the main speaker at 18 regional conferences sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Association for State and Local Histories during the 1970s. He also co-produced and participated in more than 50 educational television programs.

Outside of his work at Xavier, Fortin has served as director of the project to renovate the Historic Cincinnati Fire House Museum, as a board member of the Greater Cincinnati chapter of the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Foundation and as a director of the St. Xavier High School’s Masterwork Study Project.

In recognition of his years of focused dedication to Xavier University and its mission as well as his wisdom, leadership and tireless work in developing the academic lives of countless students, Xavier University is proud to present Roger Fortin with the Paul L. O’Connor, S.J., Leadership Award.

57 XAVIER’S HERITAGE

Xavier was founded in 1831 by Bishop Edward Dominic Fenwick, O.P., pioneer Catholic bishop of Ohio, as the first Catholic institution of higher learning in the Northwest Territory.

Known as the Athenaeum, the college’s first building in downtown Cincinnati, was largely financed by European Catholics and particularly by Catholic citizens of Vienna. The first class numbered 60 students. From its beginning, the school was dedicated to the patronage of St. Francis Xavier. The Athenaeum attracted students from as far away as New Orleans, Mexico and Central America, and its educational quality drew many local Protestant students.

At the invitation of Bishop John Purcell of Cincinnati, the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) assumed control of the institution in 1840, ensuring a steady source of faculty. Under John A. Elet, S.J., the first Jesuit president, the institution was renamed St. Xavier College.

Xavier offered its first evening classes in 1841 and summer courses were introduced in 1914, thus beginning a tradition of serving the unique needs and schedules of professionals and aspiring professionals in the Cincinnati community.

In 1920, the college moved to its present site in Avondale, and in 1930 was renamed Xavier University, reflecting its growth and complexity. While women had been attending Xavier’s evening college since its early years, Xavier’s undergraduate “day” college became coeducational in 1969. In 1980 Xavier acquired the Edgecliff College programs and integrated them with those at Xavier, and by 1987 Edgecliff faculty, staff and students were moved onto the Xavier campus.

Xavier’s growth in over a century and a half since its founding reflects its origins as a teaching institution which soundly prepares students for careers or graduate study or both. A Xavier education, particularly at the undergraduate level, is marked by the emphasis on liberal arts learning contained in Xavier’s core curriculum. Equally important in the Xavier tradition is the synthesis of human, cultural and ethical values; concern and respect for people; and an appreciation of the worth and dignity of the self and others.

The College of Arts and Sciences, Xavier’s oldest college, enrolls approximately 1,975 undergraduate and 40 graduate students, and accepts the primary responsibility for the liberal arts education of all Xavier undergraduates. The Williams College of Business enrolls 1,170 undergraduates and 1,660 MBA students, and is dedicated to preparing business students for positions of responsibility and leadership. The College of Social Sciences, Health, and Education enrolls 1050 undergraduate and 950 graduate students in specialized areas of human services.

Xavier has been an innovator in graduate education, establishing, for example, the first graduate program in Montessori education in the United States. Its graduate programs in education have produced the second highest number of school administrators in the state of Ohio. Xavier’s graduate program in health services administration is a recognized innovator in the field. The Executive MBA Program, the Health Services Administration Program and the MEd in Human Resource Development educate upper level managers, professionals and executives while they maintain their current positions in their respective organizations. The Department of Psychology offers a master’s degree with specializations in General Experimental and Industrial/Organizational. While some of these graduates continue their education, many assume responsible positions in corporate America. The Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) Program holds the distinction of being the first doctoral program at Xavier.

THE MACE The mace symbolizes the legal and chartered authority of Xavier University. It is brought into the gathering immediately before the President. Historically, the mace was a war club. In the Middle Ages it was carried by a bodyguard to defend a person of authority. Today, its purpose is strictly ceremonial and carried by the Grand Marshal. During the ceremony the mace rests at the front of the stage in its holder. A mace is a custom-made piece of art and sometimes crafted from relics of the university. It can be decorated with gems and precious metals, sometimes in the official university colors. The Xavier University mace was designed and crafted by Bernard Schmidt, Professor Emeritus, of the department of art.

62 The Seal of Xavier University

The seal of Xavier University combines three principal ideas: St. Francis Xavier, patron of the university; the Jesuit order of which he was a distinguished member; and the university. The five vertical stripes suggest the coat of arms of the Xavier family. A right arm wearing the Jesuit robe holds aloft the crucifix, signifying St. Francis Xavier preaching Christ crucified. The three sea shells signify the three journeys of Xavier into the Orient. Above the shield is the Jesuit seal, IHS, the first three letters of the name Jesus in Greek. Below is the Jesuit motto, AMDG [Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam], which translates “to the Greater Glory of God,” and the words Vidit Mirabilia Magna, a phrase from the psalms applied to St. Francis Xavier, which translates “he has seen great wonders.”
