Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform. -

SUBWAY - CHARLOTTENBURG STATION - NIGHT She's 35, pretty in a glamourless way. If you'd met her six days ago you would have found her bright, focused, together. But that was then. Tonight she sits on a bench in a DESERTED SUBWAY STATION, with a thousand-mile stare in her eyes. In the distance we hear an approaching SUBWAY TRAIN. The train grows louder, pulling towards this platform now, screeching noisily. Then it stops. A PRE-RECORDED voice tells us, in German, that this is Charlottenburg. The train sits... But Kyle doesn't rise, doesn't react at all. Staring, until: DAVID (O.S.) Honey? She turns. DAVID SHERIN stands a foot away. He's forty, handsome, kind. Her husband. She smiles, comforted. KYLE Oh. He extends a hand to her, leads her to the train. She's carrying an umbrella. They board, the train's only passengers. Must be late night. The doors shut. The train pulls away. We FOLLOW IT into darkness... as we BEGIN INTERCUT: INTERCUT WITH/INT. BERLIN MORTUARY - EVENING (FLASHBACK) We're over Kyle's shoulder as she enters the Viewing Room of a MORTUARY. A grim-looking MORTUARY DIRECTOR awaits. Beside the Mortuary Director is an open casket. We don't see yet who's inside. I'm Andrea Chalupa, a journalist and filmmaker and the writer and producer of the journalistic thriller, Mr. Jones, available now. We're grateful and honored to welcome to the show two inspiring experts who will be sharing their advice and insights for both LGBTQ youth and their families stuck at home together during this pandemic, and how to help navigate this difficult time and build a more inclusive and safe environment. Our guests are Raquel Willis, a Black transgender activist, writer, and media strategist dedicated to elevating the dignity of marginalized people, particularly Black transgender people. She is the former executive editor of Out Magazine and a former national organizer for Transgender Law Center, TLC. In 2018, she founded Black Trans Circles, a project of TLC focused on developing the leadership of Black trans women in the South and Midwest by creating healing justice spaces to work through oppression-based trauma and incubating community organizing efforts to address anti-trans murder and violence. Andrea Chalupa: During her time at Out Magazine, she published the Trans Obituaries Project to highlight the epidemic of violence against trans women of color, and developed a community-sourced 13-point framework to end the epidemic. This project was nominated for a GLAD media award. Raquel is a thought leader on gender, race and intersectionality.
