We were told not to worry, that you understood the region and would draw fair maps. We’ve also been told, throughout the process, that the era of odd-shaped, gerrymandered districts, featuring odd pairings of communiƟes, were over. Then, in your iniƟal draŌ maps, you proposed a district lumping together the Hollywood Hills, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, and East Los Angeles! To get there, the district lines cross the Los Angeles River and dart around Downtown Los Angeles, making the district as bizarrely shaped as anything the poliƟcians ever drew. It will be extremely difficult for whomever is in elected in that district to represent those communiƟes. Those communiƟes are as different as can be. We, the undersigned, strongly urge you to draw more sensible maps. East Los Angeles (and Lincoln Heights, etc.) should be together with other eastside communiƟes so that residents there can elect a repeƟƟve of their choosing. The communiƟes of Hollywood Hills, Los Feliz, and Silver Lake are not “eastside.” No porƟon of those communiƟes are east of Downtown or east of the Los Angeles River. -

Americans Should Value, Not Protest, the Police By Charlie Dent COPYRIGHT 2016 Greenhaven Press, a part of Gale, Cengage Learning The beautiful autumn foliage of Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains served as the backdrop for several weeks of tension and fear during the massive manhunt for survivalist and cop killer Eric Frein. Frein ambushed and killed State Police Corporal Bryon Dickson II and seriously wounded Trooper Alex T. Douglass. Pennsylvanians are still coping with the tragedy, as are the devastated families of the two officers. Perhaps Frein's recent murderous attack is why the horrific December 20th [2014] ambush and assassination of two New York City police officers, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, has caused many Pennsylvanians' hearts to break for the families of these two public servants, targeted simply because they wore the NYPD [New York City Police Department] uniform. Officer Ramos, a devoted husband and father of two young children, celebrated his 40th birthday earlier this month. Officer Liu, who married two months ago, leaves behind his devastated young wife and parents. The assassination of Officers Ramos and Liu marks a critical moment in this nation's recent discussions on police practices and race relations in the aftermath of the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. As a nation, how do we make sense of the events, especially since grand juries in Missouri and New York, after reviewing the evidence, declined to indict either of the officers involved? As a father of three, I can't imagine losing a child under any circumstances. Yet, Michael Brown engaged in multiple criminal actions on that fateful day. -

Mainstays on the local news for more than three decades at two stations -- the pair had also been partners at KABC-TV Channel 7's "Eyewitness News" -- Martin and Greene were reflective of the celebrity status bestowed upon anchors, the most visible and highest-paid members of Los Angeles news operations. Even their moves to rival KCBS -- Martin in 1994, Greene in 2001 -- created their own buzz, particularly for Martin, whose salary was reported to be between $1.2 million and $2 million a year. But last week the longtime newscasters themselves became an L.A. story once again. The couple was let go by KCBS, part of a swarm of budget cuts at CBS affiliates nationwide. Their unexpected ouster crystallized a growing suspicion within the local news market -- that in a world of 24/7 cable news and intensifying competition from the Internet, local big- name anchors may no longer be necessary or even relevant. -
