Boxes Of Fresh Produce Given Away In Bowling Green Saturday

Photos by Jim Kelly The Saturday morning event to give away about 900 boxes of fresh pro- duce was organized by Bishop Wendell Smith, pastor of Faith Temple Church of God and direc- tor of Cutting Edge Min- istries Food Bank. The goal was to give a box to every home in the city. About 45 volunteers showed up at 8:00 a.m. to unload and distribute the refrigerated boxes of pro- duce that came through Feeding Tampa Bay from the USDA Farmers To Family Program. The pro- duce included potatoes, cabbage, lettuce and onions. Smith said free boxes of food will be given out to homes in Wauchula in late July or early August. Pastor Smith thanked the volun- teers and the churches that participated. B2 The Herald-Advocate, June 25, 2020 – THE CLASSIFIEDS –

It's a lot of work, but the rewards are worth all the effort you put into it. Yes, I could spend a fortune on sod and get the beau- tiful lawn a lot sooner, but doing the work myself gives me a sense of satisfaction knowing I have saved myself hundreds of dollars. My grass runners I get from Buddy's. He would just mow them down when he mowed his yard. I also have cuttings from my granddaughters' and from my sister's yard that I will add to my plant collection. I seldom buy new plants unless it is something I don't see growing very often elsewhere. Most people don't mind giving you a cutting from their own plants if you ask. Once you get a cutting rooted you have your own plant to take cuttings from, and you can share with others. Mangoes are plentiful now and my neighbor just brought me a small box with about a dozen mangoes in it. I plan to make some mango jelly from the mangoes, then I will save the seeds to start new plants. I see new potential from all fruits that have seeds that I can plant. I also like to make jelly from fruits that you normally don't use for jelly. I recently made jelly from the star fruit, and it was delicious. I can't always find a recipe for the fruit I want to make jelly from, so I look for a recipe for fruits that are similar to the fruit I want to make jelly from. If I can't make the jelly when the fruit is available, I just pre- pare the fruit as if I were making the jelly, then I put it in the freezer until a more convenient time. I still have strawberries in the freezer, and peaches are in season. I'll be adding peaches to the freezer because I still have the yard to finish. I guess I keep getting slower in my old age, but at least I am consistent. Jonell Peavy lives in Avon Park and can be reached at 863-453- 3589.
