To know more details about the plot of Oblivion, continue to read below. Table of Contents. What is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion about? The events portrayed in Oblivion take place 6 years after the elder scrolls III Morrowind took place. The game features the atmosphere of the third era. However, Oblivion cannot be considered to be a direct sequel to the previous instalment. We have already mentioned that Oblivion takes place in a province called Cyrodiil, a part of Tamriel where most of the games in this franchise have taken place. The game features an open-world environment, similar to its preceding instalments. The game lets players roam around the region, explore and discover it as much as possible. You can travel anytime anywhere and can even ignore the main storyline. The sole aim of players as long as they survive in this game is to enhance their character skills and performance levels. Before the game begins, every player has to select 7 skills that would representative 7 abilities. Gameplay. By now you must have known that Oblivion features open-world role-playing elements. The game has open-ended gameplay. Players can choose to deviate from the main storyline and interact with other NPCs, compete with other players inside quests, dispatch monsters, improve theirs character traits and skills, and can travel to any part of Cyrodiil while playing. However, certain quest-specific locations provide restricted access to players. You must know that there’s no definite end to Oblivion. Even after completing the main quest, you can continue to play, in any way you like. The gameplay incorporates a quick, travel system in which an icon appears on the map whenever the player visits a new location. The major cities of the game however are excluded from this mechanism, because they are already unlocked. No matter at which location you want to arrive, you simply have to click on it on the map. You would land there immediately if it’s not restricted. We have already mentioned that character enhancement is the primary focus of every player in Oblivion. Before the game begins, players have to choose any humanoid or anthropomorphic character, each of which has different abilities. Players can customise the appearance of characters gradually, as they unlock more customisation options. You have to focus on learning more skills and abilities. Every time you improve any of the major skills, your level in the game gets upgraded. You must improve your skills by a total of 10 points. Gradually, you would get chances to improve your attributes as well. Attributes include broader character qualities like endurance, speed while skills are more specific like athletics, armorer, etc. Whenever you get hurt or afflicted with disease, your attributes get reduced. Players can play Oblivion either in the first person or third person narrative. However, if you are playing the mobile version of the game you can also enjoy an isometric projection. You can control the difficulty level of the game thereby putting your enemies in a disadvantageous position. It would weaken them, while simultaneously increase your chances of winning. Tony Cullen University of Dublin, Trinity College September 2015 iv Modelling Environmental and Temporal Factors on Background Characters in Open World Games Tony Cullen University of Dublin, Trinity College, 2015 Supervisor: Dr. Mads Haahr The goal of this dissertation is to explore methods for increasing the believability of \background" characters in open world games. While the background characters do not influence the game's main storyline, they play a vital role in making the game world feel more believable to the player. These characters often follow scripted be- haviours, carrying out the same tasks each day unless otherwise influenced by the player. Furthermore, the environmental and time-related cycles of the game world, such as day/night cycles and weather cycles, have no impact on the behaviours and actions of these characters.
