Tony Cullen University of Dublin, Trinity College September 2015 iv Modelling Environmental and Temporal Factors on Background Characters in Open World Games Tony Cullen University of Dublin, Trinity College, 2015 Supervisor: Dr. Mads Haahr The goal of this dissertation is to explore methods for increasing the believability of \background" characters in open world games. While the background characters do not influence the game's main storyline, they play a vital role in making the game world feel more believable to the player. These characters often follow scripted be- haviours, carrying out the same tasks each day unless otherwise influenced by the player. Furthermore, the environmental and time-related cycles of the game world, such as day/night cycles and weather cycles, have no impact on the behaviours and actions of these characters. -

I am also extremely grateful for those who participated in the training data set tests that led to the implemented classifier and those who were part of the mod validation testing group. The time and feedback they gave to this project was invaluable. I would also show my appreciation for all those who filled the demographic and mod validation surveys, thus providing the needed information for the thesis results. UNIVERSIDAD COMPLUTENSE DE MADRID FACULTAD DE CIENCIAS DE LA INFORMACIÓN DEPARTAMENTO DE PERIODISMO III (Teoría General de la Información) TESIS DOCTORAL Límites epistemológicos de los mundos virtuales MEMORIA PARA OPTAR AL GRADO DE DOCTOR PRESENTADA POR Daniel Alonso Martínez DIRECTORA Eva Aladro Vico Madrid, 2017 © Daniel Alonso Martínez, 2016 UNIVERSIDAD COMPLUTENSE DE MADRID Facultad de Ciencias de la Información Dpto. Periodismo III LÍMITES EPISTEMOLÓGICOS DE LOS MUNDOS VIRTUALES (Castellano) Autor: Daniel Alonso Martínez Directora: Eva Aladro Vico Madrid, 2015 Dedicado a mi esposa, Ellea.
