Volume 13, Issue 12 Snow Lake, Manitoba June 11, 2009 Snow Lake’s hunting and fishing to be chronicled Did youKnow?

• That it is with sadness and a heavy heart that I mention the late April passing of Ron Rogan (nee Lambert). I never met Ron in person, but conversed extensively with him during the interview process for Headframes, Happiness, and Heartache. He told me some wonderful stories about Dickstone Mine and others of further min- ing exploits across this great country. Ron had a disease called pulmonary fibrosis; when explaining it to me, he noted that it had no cure and no treatment. He also said that death usually came within five years of diagnosis, “But” he added with the humour I came to expect from him, “I’ll beat those odds… cause only the good die young.” He must have been a great guy, because he only lasted a year. With his passing, he adds another chapter of heart- ache to our long awaited publication. It hurts to know that he left us without ever seeing his story in print. • That the Snow Lake Jr. Rangers, Gordy Cann, and Ken deGraff will lend a hand in recognizing a couple of pioneers of the Snow/Wekusko Lake region, by placing the two plaques memorializing Kate Rice and Dick Woosey on Woosey Island. Severe weather conditions often occur during Manitoba summers. Thunder, lightning, What’s on the horizon? hail and even tornadoes can develop quickly and have the potential to be extremely dangerous. That’s why it’s important for you to understand the risks created by severe summer weather and how you can protect Protect yourself yourself — weather or not. Look for the signs Hot and/or muggy days and warm nights indicate thunderstorms may be forming — so be from severe prepared. Keep your eyes on the sky and watch for the possible development of storms. Listen for the warnings Environment Canada monitors the weather and issues severe weather warnings. Check your weather. local television or radio station regularly during the summer to see if any severe weather is expected in your area. Purchasing a Weatheradio receiver would also give you 24-hour-a-day access to Environment Canada’s weather watches and warnings. Take shelter When severe weather threatens, fi nd shelter immediately. Do not follow storms in your car or attempt to take photographs. If you’re indoors, take shelter in the basement. If there is no basement, fi nd shelter in a small interior ground fl oor room away from windows. If you are in an offi ce or apartment building, take shelter in an inner hallway or room, preferably in the basement. If you are caught outdoors, lie fl at in a ditch or other low-lying area and cover your head. Be prepared Storms often strike quickly so it’s important that you have a plan in place before severe weather hits. Prepare a “72 Hour” emergency kit — Your kit should include food, clothing, blankets, medication, bottled water and fi rst aid and tool kits, as well as fl ashlights and a battery-powered radio — with extra batteries for both. You should have enough supplies in your kit to last 72 hours. Reduce the hazards on your property — Trim rotting or dead branches and cut down dead trees on your property. You should also check the drainage around your house to reduce the possibility of basement fl ooding. Secure everything that might be blown around or torn loose. Volume 13, Issue 13 Snow Lake, Manitoba June 25, 2009 Introducing - the Class of 2009 Did youKnow?

• That the Town of Snow Lake is taking a page out of Leaf Rapids’ book with the first reading of a by-law that will see all but bio-degradable plastic shopping bags banned within the town limits. Retailers in the Town of Snow Lake will not be permit- ted to give away or sell single use plastic shopping bags. Anyone contravening the by-law is said to be guilty of an offence and liable upon summary conviction of a fine not greater than $1000. Once third reading has taken place, the ban will come into effect on January 1st of 2010. • That this portion of the paper is almost becoming my own little ‘crow column’? I certainly don’t want that to become the case; however, I felt I had to acknowledge this item, as it is quite an accomplishment. Our son Joel is in the process of coauthor- ing a book with one of his University of Alberta Professors. Joel’s part in the book will see he and friends Tyrell Shepherd and Alicia Hurley take action shots of over 200 different resistance-training exercises. Following this, he will write procedural descriptions for each, and these, along with the pictures, will be made into a book as well as put up on the University of Alberta website. “We are doing this project for Dr. Robert Kell who is an Assistant Professor of Physical Education at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus,” Jackson (L) Jean-Guy Trudeau, Jonathon Young, Elizabeth Sintzel, Nicholas Norlock, Kimberley Beilman, Morgan Cann, Amy Otto, recently advised in one of his rare calls Anthony Dupont, Megan Ward, Danny Roberts, Brianne Richard, Boe Oleksuk, Cheyenne Tandy, Calvin Cairns, home. “Rob prescribes resistance training Braden Wiwcharuk-Roy, Judd Smith, (missing)Stephanie Teneycke ~ photo by Marc Jackson programs to a wide range of people and For many there is a wide array alphabetical order, the Class of 2009. will use this book to help his clients better Last year around this time, the of emotions that greet the occasion. Take shelter When severe weather threatens, find shelter immediately. Do not follow storms in your car or attempt to take photographs. If you’re indoors, take shelter in the basement. If there is no basement, find shelter in a small interior ground floor room away from windows. If you are in an office or apartment building, take shelter in an inner hallway or room, preferably in the basement. If you are caught outdoors, lie flat in a ditch or other low-lying area and cover your head. Be prepared Storms often strike quickly so it’s important that you have a plan in place before severe weather hits. Prepare a “72 Hour” emergency kit — Your kit should include food, clothing, blankets, medication, bottled water and first aid and tool kits, as well as flashlights and a battery-powered radio — with extra batteries for both. You should have enough supplies in your kit to last 72 hours. Reduce the hazards on your property — Trim rotting or dead branches and cut down dead trees on your property. You should also check the drainage around your house to reduce the possibility of basement flooding. Secure everything that might be blown around or torn loose. Flying objects such as garbage cans and lawn furniture can injure people. Find out more Learn more about how you can protect yourself from the dangers of severe summer weather at manitoba.ca.
