Spring Equinox: The Spring Equinox this year falls on September 23. Equinoxes are a time of balance, where for a short time day and night are of equal length. After the Spring Equinox, the days will become longer than the nights as we continue the cycle of the seasons and head towards summer. The coldest, darkest, most restful time of the year is now behind us and new life begins to come forth with the increasing light. The energy at this time is said to be rising, active and expansive. Everything in nature is coming alive and all of life’s energies are moving again after a period of dormancy. There is an underlying excitement and joy in the air as we feel the potential in each new day. It is time for us to begin emerging from winter’s slumber and start reach- ing out for what we want for ourselves. It is time to plant the seeds for our future harvest and set in motion plans and dreams conceived over the previous months. You may also have the urge to become more ac- tive and get outside to enjoy the increasing warmth and beauty arising all around you. Soak it in – it’s rejuvenating, invigorating, enlivening!

s long as you are thinking you need something outside of yourself to create inner peace, you will never find it. If you need to be in Anature, holding a crystal, chanting a mantra, eating certain foods or any other such rituals it will elude you. These things may help you feel peaceful for a time, but it will be fleeting, and only a shadow of what true inner peace is. I learnt this lesson in a very troubling, and finally humbling, way. In September 2000, I was backpacking through the Middle East with a friend, Natalie. We were on the Jordan-Israeli border when the second Intifada began and renewed fighting broke out between Pal- estine and Israel. We were terrified. All of a sudden there were men with guns everywhere, crying in the streets of Jordan’s capital, Amman, protesting at Israeli police killing a young Palestinian boy. We went north into Syria, thinking we could cross into Turkey and get out of the region from there, but we didn’t have Turkish visas. There were tanks and sol- and loyalties, and a commitment to being in the present moment I’d diers everywhere. All we had were flights out of Beirut in a weeks’ time, never witnessed in any of my peers before. Their futures weren’t certain, so we headed south again and crossed into Lebanon. Wherever possible, we incorporate working with indigenous elders and shamans. It is very important when arriving at a sacred site to firstly introduce yourself to the ancestors of that place, state your purpose for visiting and ask their permission to enter. Wait for a sign; they will give it to you. It may be a bird, a butterfly, a gentle breeze, a rainbow etc. Another important thing I have learned is not to take energy from these sites unless offered, but to offer something of yourself. After one month the man returned to meet with José again. “I have found peace within peace,” the man offered. “How is it that you came to this?” asked José. The man lowered his gaze, reflecting upon his experience. “The day I left you was the 4th of July. Where I live, we celebrate this day as a monumental occasion. We pass our gratitude onto those who came before us to give us freedom. My great-great-grandfather was born into slavery and sold at the age of eight to become a cotton picker on an estate in Carolina. He did not know freedom, nor did he ever expect to. We as a people were the pick and shovel of a white man’s democracy. Our venture was to break our backs toiling to make the overseer rich. We did not conceive freedom as our birthright. In the summer of 1752 we were allowed the choice of freedom.”

“To many, this was not a concept that was easily undertaken. Our fa- thers and mothers had toiled. Their fathers and mothers had toiled and so had the previous generations before them. Ours was a burden; ours was a suffering through hardship. We were envious of what the white man had, but knew our place at the handle of a pick, shovel or plough. Not to question was the best chance of survival. The sweet air, water and a handful or two of food per day were our gifts from heaven. We did not allow ourselves pity as there was little or none to lose. Sacrifice was life and life was to toil.”

“I took the train home from here on the 4th of July. My coming to see you was a present to myself on that day of freedom. While I travelled home, I pondered your question over and over again. I realised that we hold ourselves accountable for the tragedies that may have come to those
