St. Josephine Bakhita

For many years, Josephine Bakhita was a slave but her spirit was always free and eventually that spirit prevailed. Born in the region of southern , Josephine was kidnapped at the age of 7, sold into slavery and given the name Bakhita, which means fortunate. She was resold several mes, finally in 1883 to Callisto Legnani, Italian consul in , Sudan. Two years later, he took Josephine to and gave her to his friend Augusto Michieli. Bakhita became babysier to Mimmina Michieli, whom she accompanied to ’s Instute of the Catechumens, run by the Canossian Sisters. Josephine felt drawn to the Catholic Church. She was bapzed and confirmed in 1890, taking the name Josephine. When the Michieli returned from Africa and wanted to take Mimmina and Josephine back with them, the future refused to go. During the ensuing court case, the Canossian Sisters and the patriarch of Venice intervened on Josephine’s behalf. The judge concluded that since slavery was illegal in Italy, she had actually been free since 1885. Josephine entered the Instute of St. Magdalene of Canossa in 1893 and made her profession three years later. The first steps toward her beaficaon began in 1959. She was beafied in 1992 and canonized eight years later.

‘SOUPER BOWL’ OF CARING St. Vincent de Paul has a mission to fight hunger and help the underprivileged—and you can help.

Over 25 years ago on a Super Bowl Sunday, a single youth group was inspired to begin a movement to help the hungry and those in need. They started the ‘SOUPER BOWL OF CARING’, which is an internaonal movement that has raised millions for charies across America.

The St. Jude parish St. Vincent de Paul Society will be sponsoring our own “SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY” Super Bowl weekend, February 6th & 7th. Please show your support of our efforts to feed and help the poor by dropping a donaon in our ‘soup cans’ before or aer mass, located at the church entrances. You may also send in a donaon to the church office, made payable to SVdP.

All proceeds benefit the St. Jude SVdP Society and ***remain in our parish***

THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION, A BRIEF OVERVIEW:

The prophets of the Old Testament foretold that God's Spirit would rest upon the Messiah to sustain his mission. Their prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus the Messiah was conceived by the Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus on the occasion of his bapsm by John. Jesus' enre mission occurred in communion with the Spirit. Before he died, Jesus promised that the Spirit would be given to the Apostles and to the enre Church. Aer his death, he was raised by the Father in the power of the Spirit. Confirmaon deepens our bapsmal life that calls us to be missionary witnesses of Jesus Christ in our families, neighborhoods, society, and the world. We receive the message of faith in a deeper and more intensive manner with great emphasis given to the person of Jesus Christ, who asked the Father to give the Holy Spirit to the Church for building up the community in loving service. In the Sacrament of Confirmaon, the bapzed person is "sealed with the gi of the Holy Spirit" and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.)
