Tempera (also called egg tempera) was a method of painting that superceded the encaustic painting method, only to be itself replaced by oil painting. Its name stems from the Latin word temperare, meaning 'to mix in proportion'. Unlike encaustic paints which contain beeswax to bind the colour pigments, or oil paints which use oils, tempera employs an emulsion of water, egg yolks or whole eggs (occasionally with a little glue, honey or milk). Characteristics: Advantages, Disadvantages Tempera is typically applied onto a prepared surface. Wood panel paintings, for instance, were prepared with layers of gesso (a mixture of size and chalk) to Portrait of Ginevra d'Este (1434) form a smooth surface. Unlike oil paint, tempera cannot be applied too thickly, and thus lacks the deep colouration of oils. But tempera paintings are very long lasting and colours do not deteriorate over time, unlike oil paints which tend to darken or lose colour with age. It dries rapidly, and when dry it produces a smooth matte finish. The main disadvantage - apart from the time-consuming need to apply it in thin layers - is that tempera paintings cannot usually attain the deep colour saturation that oil paintings are able to manage. Origins Tempera painting techniques seem to have originated in Antiquity. Alas, due to the perishable nature of the medium, as well as the inevitable looting, not a single important example of Classical Greek painting in tempera has survived. However, numerous works in tempera have been recorded in Egyptian art - Christina's World (1948) Museum of Modern Art, New York. notably the Fayum Mummy Portraits (c.50 BCE - 250 CE). History Following the collapse of Rome in the West, and the onset of the Dark Ages (c.400-800), the focus shifted to Constantinople, the centre of the Eastern Roman Empire. Here, the tempera method gradually superceded encaustic to become the principal medium for icon painting, as well as painted religious books known as illuminated manuscripts. European Art (c.1200-1500) Despite its ancient origins, however, the tempera method is probably most associated with medieval painting in Europe between 1200 and 1500 - a period that witnessed the rise of the Sienese School of Painting (c.1250-1550), Proto- Renaissance Art (c.1300-1400) and Early Renaissance Painting (c.1400-90). It was the standard method of panel painting during this period, until eclipsed by the new technique of oil painting. The use of tempera declined first among Flemish painters of the early 15th century, while Italian artists continued using it until the onset of the High Renaissance period at the start of the sixteenth century. Thus Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519) was one of the first artists in Italy to use oil paints as well as traditional egg tempera; while Michelangelo (1475-1564) who worked during the High Renaissance, painted mostly in oils. In fact, it was not uncommon in High Renaissance painting for artists to use a combination of both tempera and oil. Typically, tempera would be applied as a fast-drying undercoat, followed by a series of thin oil glazes. Tempera Art in the 19th/20th Century After nearly four centuries of neglect, tempera painting enjoyed a limited revival at the hands of early 19th century artists like William Blake (1757- 1827), and groups like the Nazarenes and the Pre-Raphaelites. Certain 20th century painters also used tempera, including the Norwegian Edvard Munch (1863-1944), the metaphysical artist Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) and the Die Neue Sachlichkeit expressionist Otto Dix (1891-1969). In America the tradition was continued by American Scene painters like Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) and Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009), the magic realists George Tooker and Paul Cadmus (1904-99), the Social Realists Reginald Marsh (1898- 1954) and Ben Shahn (1898-1969) and the Op-art painter Bridget Riley (b.1931). Tempera painting continues to be used in Eastern and Southern Europe where it is the official medium for icon paintings in the Greek and Russian Orthodox church. The child is dressed in a salmon-colored tunic and blue mantle; he holds a red scroll in his left hand, supporting it on his lap.[3] In the upper corners of the panel, at the height of the Virgin’s head, two medallions contain busts of two archangels [fig. 1] [fig. 2], with their garments surmounted by loroi and with scepters and spheres in their hands.[4] It was Bernard Berenson (1921) who recognized the common authorship of this work and Enthroned Madonna and Child and who concluded—though admitting he had no specialized knowledge of art of this cultural area—that they were probably works executed in Constantinople around 1200.[5] These conclusions retain their authority and continue to stir debate.

    THE HISTORY OF ENCAUSTIC Wax is an excellent preservative of materials. The Greeks applied coatings of wax and pitch to weatherproof their ships. Pigmenting the wax gave rise to the decorating of warships and merchant ships. The use of a rudimentary encaustic was an established practice in the Classical Period (500-323 BC). It is possible that at about that time the crude paint applied with tar brushes to the ships was refined for the art of painting on panels. ENCAUSTIC AND TEMPERA Encaustic on panels rivaled that of tempera in what are the earliest known portable easel paintings. Tempera was a faster, cheaper process. Encaustic was a slow involved technique, but the paint could be built up in relief, and the wax gave a rich optical effect to the pigment. These characteristics made the finished work startlingly lifelike. Moreover, encaustic had far greater durability than tempera, which was vulnerable to moisture. Pliny refers to encaustic paintings several hundred years old in the possession of Roman aristocrats of his own time. ENCAUSTIC IN SCULPTURE We know that the white marble we see today in the monuments of Greek antiquity was once colored, either boldly or delicately and that wax was used to both preserve and enhance that marble (see "Polychromy in Greek Sculpture" below). The literary evidence of how this was done is scant. The figures on the Alexander Sarcophagus in the archeological Museum of Istanbul are an example of such coloration, although it is not clear how intense the original color was. The methods used to color the marble probably varied.

    EGG TEMPERA MISCONCEPTIONS By Koo Schadler "Egg tempera is a simple, cheap, easy-to-use technique that produced gorgeous effects...Yet nobody seems to know it." Robert Vickrey (1926-2011) There are many misconceptions regarding egg tempera, and reasons for their existence and persistence. A superficial understanding of tempera limits its potential. This handout hopes to dispel some of the myths. THE REASONS FOR MISCONCEPTIONS Reason #1: The Influence of the Renaissance Egg tempera reached its peak of popularity and achievement in the early Renaissance (approximately 1400- 1450) in Italy, and is notably associated with that time and place. Most Italian, early Renaissance paintings present a less naturalistic, more idealized rendering of the world: minimal light and shadow effects; more high-key (light) values; purer, less dirtied color; cooler color temperatures; less fully three-dimensional forms. For the most part these visual choices are not inevitable to egg tempera. Instead they reflect the less realistic, more spiritually oriented medieval perspective still present in early 1400s Italy (consequently changed by the Renaissance). Because most of these paintings were done in egg tempera, people presume the medium (rather than the culture and its thinking) accounts for this aesthetic. Misconceptions also arise from egg tempera’s association with Italian Renaissance working methods. Masters and guilds taught a successful but prescribed way of developing a painting. Its not the only way to work in tempera, but often is presented as such. Reason #2: Egg Tempera’s Disappearance Renaissance artists aspired to increasing realism in images. Oil painting has advantages (described in Misconception #7) over tempera in depicting the material world and, by the late 1400s, oil became the predominate medium of the Renaissance.

    MONTEPULCIANO’S PALAZZO COMUNALE, 1440 – c.1465: RETHINKING CASTELLATED CIVIC PALACES IN FLORENTINE ARCHITECTURAL AND POLITICAL CONTEXTS Two Volumes Volume I Koching Chao Ph.D. University of York History of Art September 2019 ABSTRACT This thesis argues for the significance of castellated civic palaces in shaping and consolidating Florence’s territorial hegemony during the fifteenth century. Although fortress-like civic palaces were a predominant architectural type in Tuscan communes from the twelfth century onwards, it is an understudied field. In the literature of Italian Renaissance civic and military architecture, the castellated motifs of civic palaces have either been marginalised as an outdated and anti-classical form opposing Quattrocento all’antica taste, or have been oversimplified as a redundant object lacking defensive functionality. By analysing Michelozzo’s Palazzo Comunale in Montepulciano, a fifteenth-century castellated palace resembling Florence’s thirteenth-century Palazzo dei Priori, this thesis seeks to address the ways in which castellated forms substantially legitimised Florence’s political, military and cultural supremacy. Chapter One examines textual and pictorial representations of Florence’s castellation civic palaces and fortifications in order to capture Florentine perceptions of castellation. This investigation offers a conceptual framework, interpreting the profile of castellated civic palaces as an effective architectural affirmation of the contemporary idea of a powerful city-republic rather than being a symbol of despotism as it has been previously understood.     Egg Tempera Painting Egg tempera is an ancient medium, dating back to the classical world and prevalent in medieval Europe until oil paints were developed. Egg tempera paint must be mixed fresh each day — dry pigments dispersed with water and bound with diluted egg yolk. I prepare my painting surface in the traditional way, making my own chalk gesso, applying numerous layers to a wood panel sealed with rabbit skin glue and then sanding it smooth. The actual painting process entails countless layers of paint. The technique I use has its roots in Byzantine icon painting, following transparent “petit lac” layers with the opaque layers typical of Italian panel painting. While for an oil painting I would typically mix my colors on the palette, for an egg tempera painting I employ “optical mixing”: generally I use fully saturated colors, but because they are layered one over another, the colors you see are actually a vertical blend. One reason many of my paintings are dark is to sustain the intensity of the pigments, with minimal use of white. No matter how many layers of paint, nothing ever fully disappears in an egg tempera painting, a characteristic that has strongly influenced the way I think about my paintings, which comprise not only layers of paint, but layers of images and layers of meaning. For me, the infinitude of layers makes an egg tempera painting essentially three-dimensional, extending in as well as across the two-dimensional panel.     The Music of Tempera: An Appreciation of the Art of Barnaby Fitzgerald Frederick Turner In my experience, the art of description with drawing is the highest achievement. There is an analogy between melody and description. Their poise stands firm through all the distortions of copying, transcribing, fading and dirtying that time and wear can reasonably send against them, as does the indestructible architecture of verse. To test this principle my students and I taped a little Rembrandt facsimile to the floor and the whole class walked over it for a semester. It didn’t lose a thing - so much for technique… or at least we understood the WHY of the technique, and how Art is the extraction of a technique’s full potential to the point where the technique falls off like a spent cocoon. Once extracted the art stands on its own, only then miraculously independent of its means, having entered our memory; its measure of being new only being the amount of its power of renewal. Copyright by Austin Wells Davis 2018 Abstract In 1503, Florentine art master Leonardo da Vinci received the commission from Gonfaloniere Piero Soderini to depict the Florentine victory at Anghiari. The Battle of Anghiari gave Florence control over central Italy during the Lombardy Wars. The marquee battle became a staple point for Florentine defense and the perfect battle to depict inside the Grand Council Chamber of the Palazzo Vecchio. However, Leonardo’s Battle of Anghiari was never finished and the wall was assigned to Giorgio Vasari fifty years later. Instead of painting over Leonardo’s work, Vasari created another wall for his Battle of Marciano, thus hiding Leonardo’s work. Little progress was made in finding Leonardo’s Battle of Anghiari, but the mystery began to unravel in 2007 with Maurizio Seracini’s search. This search caused an uproar from the art community when Seracini drilled into Vasari’s mural. A resistance to Seracini began, calling his project unethical and unconstitutional because it infringes on the cultural rights of Italy and the rights of Vasari. The opposition also deemed it unethical because it destroys the originality of Vasari’s mural. Seracini’s search was officially disbanded by the Florentine government due to the opposition it created.

Buhler 2013 2 Abstract Beneath the façade of total conformity in the Soviet Union, a dynamic underground community of artists and intellectuals worked in forced isolation. Rejecting the mandates of state-sanctioned Socialist Realist art, these dissident artists pursued diverse creative directions in their private practice. When they attempted to display their work publicly in 1974, the carefully crafted façade of Soviet society cracked, and the West became aware of a politically subversive undercurrent in Soviet cultural life. Responding to the international condemnation of the censorship, Soviet officials allowed and encouraged the emigration of the nonconformist artists to the West. This dissertation analyzes the foundation and growth of the nonconformist artistic movement in the Soviet Union, focusing on a key group of artists who reached artistic maturity in the Brezhnev era and began forging connections in the West. The first two chapters of the dissertation center on works that were, by and large, produced before emigration to the West. In particular, I explore the growing awareness of artists like Oleg Vassiliev of their native artistic heritage, especially the work of Russian avant-garde artists like Kazimir Malevich. I look at how Vassiliev, in a search for an alternative form of expression to the mandated form of art, took up the legacy of nineteenth-century Realism, avant-garde abstraction, and Socialist Realism.

    Issue no. 13-August 2012 CLANGOUR OF “BATTLE” Paolo Uccello’s celebrated painting emerges from restoration with heightened forcefulness and serves as the true apotheosis of Renaissance perspectival vision, as the fitting conclusion to the “Bagliori Dorati” exhibit The high point and, at least symbolically, the concluding work of the “Bagliori dorati” exhibit is the restored Battle of San Romano that Paolo Uccello painted ca. 1440. In this painting the painstakingly drafted and “flash-frozen” vision in perspective brings together and organizes the chaos, the deafening clamor, the crush and metallic clashing of the chivalric dream at its most extreme. The masterful restoration confirmed the vicissitudes experienced by the panel, which Lorenzo the Magnificent obtained (along with the two others) after putting heavy pressure on its owners, the Bartolini Salimbeni; he then put all three on display in his room in the Palazzo Medici, adapting their shape with cuts and additions. Two armies gleaming in silver and gold; their massive mounts; sweet landscapes barely disturbed by the soldiers’ passage; chain mail and horses’ manes: nothing escapes the painter’s eye in this perspective Renaissance vision.
