Bell6 Accepted: 23 July 2018 © Springer Nature B.V. 2018 Abstract Entomophagy—the practice of eating insects—has been touted as a means to combat undernutrition and food insecurity globally. Insects offer a nutritious, environmentally friendly alternative to resource-intensive livestock. But the benefits of edible insects cannot be realized if people do not choose to eat them. We therefore examine the social acceptability of edible insects in rural Zambia, where entomophagy is common but underexplored. Through a village case study, we show that edible insects are not valued equally, are understood socially, and seem to reflect and reinforce social values. We utilize grounded theory and ethnographic methods, including semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and observation to examine collective entomophagy beliefs. While we expected to see differentiation in perceptions across groups based on kinship, we demon- strate that social values related to class, urbanism, gender, and age emerge as more germane explanations for entomophagy perceptions, reflecting their social weight. By expanding on current apperception of entomophagy behavior, our findings inform future research and efforts to promote entomophagy through minilivestock farming. Systems designed to maximize output, minimize labor, and highlight benefits are more likely to be widely accepted. We do not anticipate tribal association will be the primary limitation on minilivestock adoption in this context. Information was gathered using a structured questionnaire which was administered to 60 respondents across the three villages and also through direct observation. A total of six insect species were identified belonging to six families and four orders (i.e., Coleoptera, Isoptera, Lepidoptera and Orthoptera) with t he two most consumed orders being Lepidoptera and Coleoptera. Carebara vidua F. Smith (33.3%) was the most consumed followed by Sternocera orissa Buq. (21.7%), Agrius convolvuli L. (15.0%), Oryctes boas Fabr.(13.3%), Imbrasia belina Westwood (10.0%) and Lo custa migratoria (6.7%). The study revealed that insects were abundant during and/or immediately after the rainy season. This implies that insects can be harvested and preserved during the time of abundan ce to maximize their utilization in meeting the human protein needs. The common methods of collecting insects were hand picking, trapping and digging. Insects were prepared for consumption by boiling, frying or roasting.

    April 2016 The McDougall Newsletter Volume 15 Issue 4 Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) The Wrong Low-carb Answer for Bowel Troubles I recently received the following email: "I am writing to you about my 44-year-old niece who has been told by her doctors that she has SIBO. They have put her on a NO CARB diet, just protein and fat, as well as a sec- ond course of antibiotics. She is doing miserably and is very upset with her constant constipation, bloating, and GI distress." The newest fad diagnosis for explaining why people feel poorly for no apparent reason is called Small Intes- tinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)—meaning there is an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine; the section of the intestine beginning just below the stomach and ending at the start of the large intestine. We consume large amounts of bacteria with our foods and found naturally in the saliva in our mouth. Our stom- ach acids kill most of these bacteria before the remnants of the chewed and partially digested food pass in- to the small intestine.
