Kia Ora … Welcome

As your hosts, we warmly welcome you to, what we believe is the charming Anakiwa 401 in the Marlborough Sounds – our home in paradise since 2008.

The property was built in circa 1926 and was one of the first houses in Anakiwa Bay. Originally, there was a guest house owned by the Hazelwood family, where the Outward Bound School stands today, with the surrounding land being a sheep farm. The family then built a house for their Farm Managers - this now is our Anakiwa 401. The house went on to be used as the local school for up to 13 children, hence the name of one of our rooms being The Old Library. And later, the house was owned by well-known New Zealand journalist and author Don Grady. It was in 1995, that the house welcomed its first guests as Anakiwa Backpackers.

Since then, it has undergone a few changes, most notably in the last 12 years. We believe we have renovated the property to a high standard whilst retaining its character and history. The quality separate private accommodation we provide our guests consists of The Bay View Apartment - a self-contained one bedroom apartment with a view of the bay), along with The Guest Wing - our two bedroom, two bathroom hosted holiday accommodation with a large kitchen/lounge/dining area, opening to a sheltered barbeque and outdoor dining area for guests to use. The numerous well-established kowhai, kahikatea and cabbage trees in the garden ensure many native birds including tuis, wood pigeons & fantails visit us in spring & summer with a wonderful dawn chorus. The lawn terraces & hammock garden provide perfect places to relax.

In 2014, after making some changes, we felt the time was right to respond to our guests’ feedback that our accommodation is 'more than a backpackers', and change our name to Anakiwa 401 – Self-catering Guesthouse, one that better reflects its homely feel and yet retains the conveniences of self-contained accommodation.

Anakiwa 401 is conveniently situated between waterfront Picton & Havelock - the ‘green- lipped mussel capital of the world’. And within a short drive, you have the famous Marlborough sauvignon blanc vineyards in Blenheim and the vibrant city of Nelson.

So let us introduce ourselves. We found Anakiwa 401 purely by chance, whilst travelling around New Zealand in a campervan on our honeymoon. After returning home to England, we decided a relaxed life in rural yet coastal paradise, working together in hospitality was the direction we wanted. So within 6 months, we, including our late dog Scruff, moved across the world to live in Anakiwa, New Zealand and haven’t looked back since .

As we do not live in this part of the house, please let us know if you find anything broken or of any improvements you feel could be made to make your stay here more comfortable. We strive to ensure you enjoy Anakiwa & its environs as much as we do and that your stay at Anakiwa 401 is a highlight of your New Zealand holiday.

Swimming Walk down the jetty and jump off the end – swimming here is safe and fun and there are steps for you to climb back up onto the jetty. Swim out to the swim platform close to the jetty (in the water from October-Easter only).

Boat Cruises Would you like to experience the Queen Charlotte Sound from the water? See some of the beautiful secluded bays with typical NZ baches (beach holiday homes), wildlife on the Sound and the native bush coastline. Ask us for details.

Water-Skiing Would you like to water-ski on the Queen Charlotte Sound? Never skied before but fancy learning? Ask us for details.

Wildlife The area is abundant with wildlife, so when you’re in the garden or on the tracks, listen & look out for native birds such as the tui, bellbird, fantail, NZ wood pigeon, silvereye, sacred kingfisher, yellowhammer, weka & at night, hear the morepork. Although wild pigs and goats are usually shy, you may still see them on the track – we’ve seen them as close as the 1km mark from here.

Near or on the water, you may spot Spotted Shags, Pied Shags, Black Shags, Australasian gannets, Yellow-billed Spoonbills, Oystercatchers – South Island & Variable, Black Swans or even Little Blue Penguins.

You’ll see 2 different types of starfish - the 11-armed Sea Star (largest starfish in NZ) is often seen clinging to the jetty piles in the water and look carefully – there are also many fish and we’ve even seen seahorses in the water from the jetty.

Sometimes seals make their home on the jetty & you’ll often see them on the rocks or playing in the water along the coastline when you’re kayaking.

We also have dolphins visit the bay and even orcas – so do keep a look out across the water.

In the evenings, walk down the steps on the jetty, turn off your torch and splash the water – you might see some Bioluminescent Organisms glowing in the water – it’s an amazing spectacle. Bioluminescence is the ability of some animals and algae to glow in the dark. If it’s warm enough swim with them – it’s fantastic.

WALKS Queen Charlotte Track Walks To the Glow-worms (10 mins one-way) In the evening, take a stroll along the first part of the track. Walk past the last few houses and then you’ll enter the track. Walk over first bridge & up a small hill, then down and at the next bridge (track turns to right), turn off your torch - let your eyes adjust & be amazed at the magnificent display of glow worms.

To Davies Bay (45 mins one-way) This section of the famous Queen Charlotte Track follows an old bridle path - a wide & easy path running through mature forest with large beech trees. Davies Bay with its sandy beach is a perfect stop for a swim or picnic lunch.

To the Lookout (1½ hour one-way) Continue on from Davies Bay on the Queen Charlotte Track to a lookout, overlooking Ngakuta Bay with spectacular views of the Queen Charlotte Sound.

To Neville’s Point (2½ hour one-way) If you want to walk a little further than the Lookout, you can walk on until you see a blue bollard -we’ve named this Neville’s Point. From Anakiwa this is about 10kms one way - you will need to return by foot as no return by water taxi is possible.

To Mistletoe Bay (3-4 hours one-way)* Continuing on from the Lookout, the track passes through mature forest after ascending from Bottle Bay, into rapidly regenerating forest which supports large populations of waxeyes, tomtits, finches, fantails and wekas, then skirts some farm paddocks above Onahau Bay, before arriving at the Te Mahia Saddle and Mistletoe Bay. You can either do this as a ‘day walk’ and return to Anakiwa back on the Track or pre-book a water taxi to take you to Mistletoe Bay departing 8.50am from Anakiwa Jetty (Arrow Water Taxis) - $30pp & walk back at your leisure. ** You could also walk from Lochmara Lodge to Anakiwa – approx. 5 hour walk – Arrow Water Taxi.

To Portage (6-8 hours one-way)* For a full day’s adventure, walk on from Mistletoe Bay to Torea Bay. This path follows the ridge with views over both the Queen Charlotte and Kenepuru Sounds. Kamahi, manuka and kanuka are prolific here, protecting shrubs and trees that will soon grow to shelter the way. Book a water taxi to take you to Torea Bay departing 9am from Anakiwa Jetty (Arrow Water Taxis) - $40pp.**

* Please note: A QCTLC Track Pass is required for these walks as you cross over private land – $12 per adult for a One Day pass or $25 per adult for a 5 consecutive day pass - available from the ticket machine beside the kiosk in the car park.

**If you’d prefer to walk to Mistletoe Bay or Torea Bay, and then take a water taxi back in the afternoon, you can do this; see our Water Taxis Price List on previous page. 11 | P a g e

Local Walks

Outward Bound Cross-Country Track (20 mins loop) Walk along waterfront & take 1st right along Lady Cobham Grove. Walk a little further and you will see a sign on your left for Outward Bound Cross-Country Track. Follow this, through paddocks, bush, leaving all gates as you find them. You will end up on the road beside Anakiwa 401.

Governors Bay Track (10 mins one way) This walking track leads to a wonderful swimming beach from Queen Charlotte Drive when heading towards Picton.

Coastal Loop Walking Track (1 hour loop) Drive 15 minutes towards Havelock and you’ll see the sign for the Cullen Point Lookout. This walk follows the coastline around Cullen Point and has great views down the Mahau Sound & Mahakipawa Arm.

Link Pathway (for as long as you like ) Walk along waterfront until you see a gravel track on your left – this runs along the coast to the end of Anakiwa Road with some lovely views looking up the Queen Charlotte Sound. You’re able to follow the Link Pathway, an off-road track, to Picton and most sections of the Link Pathway are now open towards Havelock. If you only want to walk part of it, ask us for details on The Link Bus service.

Cullen Creek Walkway (3 hours return) The Waikakaho/Cullen Creek Walkway follows an old goldminers’ trail across the range between the Wairau Valley and Linkwater. Drive towards Havelock & turn left just before Linkwater Service Station, signposted Historic Mining Site/Waikakaho Walkway. This is an historically interesting section of the walkway starting at the site of the former mining town, Cullensville, crossing Cullen & Prospector Creeks, a spectacular sidle above the Creek hewn in places out of near-vertical rock walls by the miners to a private hut. Near this hut, a number of stone chimneys and foundations mark the location of a once- sizeable village.

Mt Stokes Tramping Track (4-5 hours return) The Mount Stokes tramping track requires strong footwear, warm & waterproof clothing and at least moderate fitness. The views make the 4-5 hour (return) walk worthwhile though. At 1203m above sea level, it’s the highest point in the Sounds and has the only patch of alpine vegetation. Mt Stokes is a 1½-2 hour drive from Anakiwa. Turn off Queen Charlotte Drive into the Kenepuru Sound Road, drive past Portage, take the Titirangi Road until the fork in the road that directs you to Anakoha Bay or Titirangi Bay. The track is sign-posted & starts at this junction.

Surrounded by forest with towering beech, kahikatea and rimu trees bordering the beautiful Pelorus River, this Reserve is a place to relax and enjoy refreshing forest and river scenery, in one of the last stands of river flat forest in Marlborough. It’s a very popular swimming, kayaking, canoeing, picnicking and fishing spot with a series of short walks to explore and not forgetting, you'll also find a little bit of Middle-earth magic in this area. Access is by the Queen Charlotte Steam Ship Company, water taxi or rent a kayak. Once on the headland, you can enjoy a 2.7 km circular track around the sanctuary through regenerating native forest. The track has a gentle grade, and there are seats and viewpoints at intervals along the way.

Scenic Drive - Picton to Rarangi on the coastal road through Port Underwood. This drive takes you from Picton, through Waikawa, past Karaka Point on to the beautiful bays of Port Underwood, where whaling took place in the 1820s and 1830s. A signpost indicates the site of the declaration of British sovereignty over the South Island and a cairn marks the place of the early mission station. Then on to the sheltered and scenic Whites Bay, terminal of the first telegraph cable that linked the North and South Islands, and finally the beach and cliffs at Rarangi. There are many opportunities to stretch your legs with short walks along the way. The distance for the round trip returning to Picton via SH1 is 75 km.

Blenheim… .. is situated in the heart of wine-growing Marlborough, so there are plenty of winery cellar doors you can visit either on a guided tour or on your own by car or bike. Brancott Estate Heritage Centre’s cellar door and restaurant complex atop a hillock overlooking one of the original sauvignon blanc vineyards & the iconic Marlborough landscape is worth a visit, even if only for a coffee.

Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre is one of the world’s largest private collections of Great War aircraft and artifacts in dramatic displays created by Wingnut Films, with mannequins by Weta Workshop – features Sir Peter Jackson’s own collection of WW1 aircraft and artifacts.

Or next door is the Omaka Classic Cars – a unique collection of over 100 cars that gives you an insight into the Marlborough & New Zealand motoring from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Nestled in grape country, hidden behind high hedges, lies the private but nationally acclaimed Upton Oaks Garden. A must see visit, for all who love the beauty of a romantic garden, that has been much filmed and photographed.

For walking and mountain bike tracks, head to the Wither Hills Farm Park. A working New Zealand farm and once you've ascended the main ridge, you’ll experience great views to the NW of the Richmond Ranges, Wairau Valley and over to Blenheim.

The Wairau Bar, or Te Pokohiwi,] is a 19 ha gravel bar formed where the Wairau River meets the sea in Cloudy Bay, Marlborough, north-eastern South Island, New Zealand. It is an important archaeological site, settled by explorers from East Polynesia who arrived in New Zealand about 1280. It is the earliest known human settlement in New Zealand. Discovered in the 1940′s and now confirmed as the birth place of humans in New Zealand more than 700 years ago. The Marlborough Museum has an amazing exhibit of this sacred and unique site.

Kenepuru Road and the Mahau & Kenepuru Sounds

To explore other areas of the Marlborough Sounds & for some stunning views, you can drive along the Kenepuru Road where you’ll travel along both the Mahau & Kenepuru Sounds. If you want a challenging climb, the Mt Cawte Track from Moetapu Bay Road is a 3 hour loop or up and back – drive to the end of Moetapu Bay Road, park here and follow the track up to the high point 474m, a nice view with picnic tables, then either walk back the same way or continue on down to the road and walk back to your car (approx. 3.5 km along the quiet scenic road). Back to Kenepuru Road, at the Ohingaroa Reserve, you’ll find a natural open space for relaxing & picnicking with a beach in the beautiful Kenepuru Sound.

Just minutes down Mahau Road (left turn off Kenepuru Road), you’ll find the Sherrington Honey Shop – well-known for its Manuka honey, produced from the native manuka or New Zealand tea tree.

Driving on further you will come to Te Mahia Bay Resort where you can browse the gift shop and enjoy a coffee overlooking the sheltered bay in the Kenepuru Sound.

Back to the Kenepuru Road at Mistletoe Bay, there is a safe grassy area leading down to the beach in the bay for relaxing. If you feel like a short walk, the Peninsula Walk explores the peninsula between Mistletoe and Waterfall bays (30 minutes return). Or for an amazing view over the Sounds, take the Queen Charlotte Track from the road heading north ie towards Portage) – a short way along here you will see a sign for the Onahau Lookout – a steep zig-zagging climb up the hill – 1 hour return and well worth the effort for great views on a clear day.

Back on the Kenepuru Road, you’ll come to The Portage – a resort with a restaurant and almost at the Kenepuru Head, is Sandy Bay with a large sandy beach and chairs & tables to sit & enjoy the view whilst having a picnic.

Nelson

Just a 1½ hour drive along SH6 from Anakiwa, is the vibrant coastal town of Nelson - full of bustling cafes, charming boutiques and funky art galleries, waiting to be leisurely explored. Nelson is New Zealand’s second oldest city and the art deco Nelson Cathedral stands guard over the city centre.

Wander down on a Saturday to New Zealand's famous and best local market in the middle of Nelson at Montgomery Square carpark, selling a range of organic, gluten free and local produce, as well as arts & crafts.

And enjoy a cold ale at the end of day shopping – boutique wineries and craft brewers are a plenty with serious pubs and breweries.

A short walk from the Botanical Gardens will take you to the Centre of New Zealand at the top of a small hill, overlooking the city and the Tasman Sea. The walk is straight up which means a great thrill when you arrive at the top.

Access to and from the port is through "The Cut" – a man-made gap in the remarkable 13 kilometre naturally occurring Boulder Bank with its elegant lighthouse.

Tahunanui Beach is a popular swimming spot just 5 minutes from the city centre.

Before arriving into Nelson city is Hira and the picturesque rural drive to Cable Bay with its sheltered pebble beach, unique causeway to Pepin Island separating the beautiful estuary from the ocean & the Cable Bay Adventure Park, home to the world’s longest flying fox, quad bike tours & archery.

Driving 1½ hours via SH63 from Anakiwa, you will arrive at St Arnaud - a small alpine village, west of the mountains of the St Arnaud Range near the historic Tophouse Settlement. The Nelson Lakes National Park here has two beautiful lakes, Rotoiti and Rotoroa with wonderful walks in and around. And if you’re a snow skier and travelling NZ between June to October, Rainbow Ski Area is a sunny, family friendly field suited for beginners & intermediates.
