John Gardner MP Morialta Matters Penfold Park, Magill News from the Member for Morialta Disappointing Desal Debacle Dear Resident It has been an eventful few months! As you may have seen in the media, our new $2.2 billion Morialta’s boundaries will change desalination plant at Port Stanvac will be mothballed. significantly as a result of the Since the plant was announced in 2007, water prices have electoral redistribution, which will increased by 176% to pay for its construction. take effect as of March 2014. The new map can be seen on page 3. Work has commenced on the upgrade of Gorge Road. Hopefully any delays should be over early in the new year and we’ll be able to all enjoy a smoother ride. I’ve also been busy within my portfolio areas. In July, after calls from the Opposition and the cross- benches, the Government agreed to offer a formal apology to victims of forced adoptions - some comfort for those who have suffered for years. Several policy announcements and private member’s bills in my areas Businesses and contractors have also suffered with work have made for a busy time in the coming to an end on the plant. Parliament - on issues as diverse as teen drinking, birth certificates for I can assure you they have packed up and gone, more are seriously considering it, some are just really walking away from adoptees, and disability housing. the industry because frankly there’s just not the work there.” Finally, my website has also been - Phil Sutherland, Civil Contractors Federation upgraded, with many new features. A significantly cheaper (and smaller) 50gL desalination plant Have a look next time you’re online: was originally proposed by the Liberal Party as insurance www.JohnGardnerMP.com.au! against future droughts. The Government’s decision to double the size to 100gL was reckless, expensive, and has turned out to be an enormous mistake that we’ll all be paying for well into the future.

John Gardner MP - Local Morialta News Saint Ignatius wins Gold Saint Ignatius College recently experienced great success at the National School Aerobics finals, winning two gold medals in August. Three theatrical dance teams travelled to Sydney to compete against schools from all over Australia. Senior theatrical dance team, Rock On!, claimed first prize over nine other competitors. Their score of 91.43 was the highest score across two days of the national competition. A panel of seven judges sang the girls praises. Guest judge, Anthony Ikin, was “blown away” by the girls’ talent and amazing choreography.

RSB Dark to Light Walk On 11 October Adelaide experienced a rare event - snow at . While many were sensibly rugged up, I enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the Royal Society for the Blind’s annual Dark to Light Walk, along with Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond and Adelaide MP, Rachel Sanderson. It was a bit wetter and windier than expected! We also enjoyed the company of RSB Ambassador and finalist on The Voice Rachael Leahcar (pictured left). The walk raised funds for the RSB to supply canes to people who are blind or vision impaired. As Rachael put it herself: “My cane gives me the mobility and independence to live my life the way I want to. Thanks to the RSB, my family and my own determination, there’s really nothing I can’t do!”

Community Cooperation - Morialta Barns Revegetation I am always impressed at what community organisations can achieve when they work together. One such example has been the revegitation project next Morialta Barns at Norton Summit which had long been infested with blackberries and other non-native weeds. The Fourth Creek Catchment Group began the project to revegitate the area last year by spraying the blackberries. Volunteers from nearby Youth With A Mission (YWAM) helped with the effort and volunteers from the Summertown, Carey Gully and Norton Summit - Ashton CFS brigades visited on a Saturday earlier this year and burnt the weeds after they had died. I recently met with Jacqui Dekker from Fourth Creek Catchment Group and Chris Harrison from YWAM for a working bee at the site. There is still a fair bit of work left to go but with the efforts of various community groups I’m sure it won’t be too long until this land is completely returned to native vegetation.
