COUNTY Continued from page 1A started a group, Nassau for Nature, targeting the west side of the county. • Nassau County Commis- sioner Aaron Bell and Amelia Island Museum of History Executive Director Phyllis Davis were unanimously appointed to the Amelia Island Tourist Development Council Board of Directors. Bob Hartman was reappointed. • Prosser Inc. was hired to design Westside Regional Park for $91,320. Prosser is respon- sible for master site planning, programming and design for the more than 110-acre site. • North Hampton community members voiced opposition to the creation of a two-lane road with trail from Miner Road to Amelia Island Concourse. William Bass, Jackie Glass, Jonathan Berk, David Batten and Perry Petersen said the road would be a disaster to quality of life, force the Golf Club at North Hampton to remove or eliminate two holes, eliminate RV and boat storage and lower housing val- ues. Commissioners agreed with the residents and voted to remove the road from the 2030 Nassau County Comprehensive Plan. • Commissioners agreed to amend the county’s Future Land Use Map for 437.7 acres to allow for mixed-use projects in the William Burgess Overland District, south of the Wildlight community. Planning and Economic Opportunity Director Thad Crowe said the map change “employs what the county has been working on for quite some time to try to combat sprawl and to turn future growth into more efficient, coherent and more liv- able type growth.” The plan calls for mixed- used projects, a more walkable environment, three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. What a find for sure! Not far away, a friend of Dalton’s is still alive and has his very own roadside attraction, the Pearl Fryer Topiary Garden. Fryer spent his time con- verting a 3-acre corn field into an amazing collection of shrubs trimmed in unusual shapes, a topiary garden without known animal forms. Fryer is older now and unable to wield his clippers, and the local garden club that maintains the place does not seem to be as dedicated as it was with most of his topiary art now growing out of line. But neighbors next door have been doing their own more tra- ditional topiary art in his honor. And, speaking of honor, we had the honor to meet Fryer on our visit. As we drove up in our car, an old Black man in a wheelchair was sitting on his front porch. Senior Jalen Holmes is stopped in his tracks by the Wolverines, above. “It’s going to be a tough game,” FBHS junior quarter- back Cam Miller said. “It was a tight game the first time, and I just know it’s going to be a good game. t CROSS COUNTRY Pirate pair advance to state meet The Fernandina Beach High School boys and girls cross country teams ended their unusual, COVID-19-impacted season Saturday at New World Golf and Sports Complex in Jacksonville. Unfortunately, it was in the more usual fash- ion as neither team advanced from the regional meet to the state meet this Saturday in Tallahassee. The top two boys, Caden Kwaitkowski and Steven Durr, did, however, qualify as individuals with their outstand- ing second- and sixth-place finishes. The boys team, despite hav- ing an unusual two-year string of qualifying for the state cham- pionships, came typically close, but was edged out of the fourth and last qualifying by just two points. Pedro Menendez had 120 to 122 for the Pirates. (Like golf, adding up the finishing places of a team’s five scorers, allows the low score to win.) Over the past 12 years, finish- ing one or two places out of making it to the state meet has been the Pirates’ typical fate. Ironically, this was Coach Bill Beaumont’s rebuilt dream team, one with a real pros- pect of improving on the 2018 team’s best ever FBHS finish of seventh place. That veteran team was lead by three strong seniors, John Sorensen, Riley Dean and Riley Salmon, plus talented sophomores Durr and Kwaitkowski. The 2019 season, rebuilding around those two now-junior leaders and a combi- nation of first-time sophomores and freshmen, still managed to reach the state meet and fin- ished 19th. This season it wasn’t for lack of talent that the team did not realize its hopes. With COVID-19 safety restrictions limiting the amount of volun- tary team summer workouts, and then, the number of avail- able meets in the fall, every- one’s fitness was more the concern. “We also missed those sum- mer bonding-time workouts when we all run together in joint pursuit of our goals,” Kwaitkowski said. Beaumont agreed and added, “We, like all of society, suffered from the impact of the virus. But, at least we here in Florida had a cross country Senior Devonn Littlejohn, above; senior quarterback Justice Pope with season. Many states canceled Head Coach Terrence Flagler, left; and sophomore Zack Drawdy, far left, on the sideline Thursday night. JULIA ROBERTS/NEWS-LEADER City recognizes Woman’s Club for 100 years of service At last week’s City Commission meeting, Fernandina Beach Mayor Johnny Miller pre- sented a proclamation recognizing the 100th anniversary of the GFWC Woman’s Club of Fernandina Beach to Mary Powell, a past president of both the Fernandina Beach and state chapters of GFWC, President Sue Dwyer, and past president Jeri Johns. Since 1920, the Woman’s Club has provided a number of services to the community, includ- ing operation of a dental clinic for underprivileged Nassau County children and a tonsil clinic, helping to establish Fort Clinch and the Atlantic Avenue Junior High School, supplying books to what eventually became libraries in area schools, and donating to Nassau County Council on Aging, The Salvation Army, NAMI, Take Stock in Children, Micah’s Place, and many other organizations. The group has planned a 100th “birthday” celebration open to the public for 3-6 p.m. Sunday at its clubhouse, 201 Jean Lafitte Blvd. For information, call 904-261-6088.
