Orientation Program for millers and industrial stakeholders regarding Atta Fortification in PDS Lake Resort, , Haryana 27th March 2019

Food Fortification Initiative (FFI) organised an orientation program for millers and industrial stakeholders at Karna Lake Resort, Karnal on 27th March 2019. The objective of the program was to bring all the stakeholders involved in wheat flour fortification in Haryana for Public Distribution System (PDS) at common forum and address the challenges faced by each of them. The agenda is placed at Annexure 1.

Participants: Over 50 participants including 12 wheat flour millers and representatives from HAFED, FFI, Food and Civil Supplies, FFRC, premix suppliers, equipment manufacturers and lab were present for the program. The list of wheat flour millers is placed at Annexure 2.

Communication material including FFRC brochure, FSSAI standards on fortification, Wheat flour technical manual, FAQs, Packaging and Labelling requirements, and a list of FSSAI notified NABL accredited labs equipped with fortificant testing, premix suppliers and fortified wheat flour posters were shared with all the participants.

Presentations

The program started with presentation on journey of wheat flour fortification in Haryana and technical session on wheat flour fortification given by FFI. It was followed by presentation given by FFRC fortification regulations, packaging and labelling requirements, Swasth Bharat Yatra along with the online registration procedure of +F logo was given by FFRC. A dummy registration process was performed and TVC on fortification was shown to the participants so that they have better clarity on the concept of fortification. Other presentations included quality analysis by ITC Labs, technological solutions of premixes (by PD Navkar) and equipment (by Buhler Ltd).

Way Forward:  Currently, 7600 MT/month of fortified wheat flour has been started in PDS for entire district of Karnal and Ambala. In next few months, fortification will scale up to and Kaithal.  A training session will be conducted for wheat flour millers on sampling method in collaboration with ITC Labs and FFI  As suggested by FFRC, HAFED and FFI will consider procurement of premixes centrally  HAFED to share quality analysis report of every batch with FFRC.  Training of FSO on fortification after receiving a formal communication from the State  FFRC to provide end to end support such as +F logo registrations, fortification labelling declarations, guidance and dissemination of fortification related directives and marketing collateral regarding the fortified wheat flour specific to Haryana  FFI to conduct similar orientation program every six months
