SEATTLE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, INC P. O. BOX 549, SEATTLE, WA. 98111 176 (6-72) Bulletin of the Seattle Genealogical Society* Inc. PRESIDENT' S PAGE

Ed, note: Mr. H. Y9 Smith resigned his position effective May 31st. Mr. Bernie Bean, 1st Vice President succeeded Mr. Smith. (Mr. Smith's term had one more year), The following is from Mr. Bean.

To the Membership of The Seattle Genealogical Society, Inc.:

For a great many years it has been my privilege and pleasure to have been an Officer of this Society, most of the time as 1st Vice President. These have been growing years for our Society in terms of our ability to assist people in their genealogical research and in the tools we have provided and in the size of the Society, It has grown also in National stature. Ten years ago very few people outside of King County, Washington, ever heard of The Seattle Genealogical Society, Today that is different and your Society now has a National reputation as a progressive genealogical Society. It deserves our continued loyalty and support in order to provide even better tools for the research we all enjoy and are dedicated to.

Two months ago, for reasons of health, our President Mr. Harlan Y. Smith submitted his resignation effective June 1st, He is a man we all value and re spect and his leaving us causes pain.

For the past five years I have been the President of The John Bean of Exeter Family Association, Inc., a world wide organization of The Clan MacBean, with a- bout 3,700 member families at the present time,, Since a great deal of our work is genealogical it is very time-consuming. In succeding to the Presidency of the Seattle Genealogical Society I find myself with insufficient time to do justice to both offices and have therefore submitted my resignation as the President of this Society to the Board of Directors on June 5th, 1972. Mrs., Leonard W. (Polly) Stevens now succeeds to the office of President for the next year.

I shall continue to serve the Society in any capacity within my abilities.

Most Cordially, signed - Bernie Bean

Ed. note: Mrs. Leonard W« (Polly) Stevens was not available at this late date to give us a statement of her plans for the fiscal year ahead* This page was left until today, June 5th, as the last of the Bulletin was being printed before assembly. When asked at the Board meeting if she wished to add a few remarks in this limited space she said the action was too new and she would rather wait and visit with you in the September issue.

Most of you in the Seattle, and Washington State area, are probably acquainted with Mrs. Stevens. She has been the smiling helpful lady at the supplies table at the regular membership meetings. She is active, and holds offices, in many patriotic organizations of a historical and genealogical nature. She has always been a willing and generous worker with the interest of your Society at heart. Polly will need your help in the months ahead to continue the growth and benefit that your Society can enjoy* With so many new members in the organization we can all benefit from your talents, ideas and help - make yourself known, BULLETIN OF THE SEATTLE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, INC. 177 P. 0„ BOX 549 SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, 98111 MU2 1410 PUBLISHED QUARTERLY: SEPTEMBER, DECEMBER, MARCH, JUNE Dues: $5.00 per year Editor: Roy Colbert Vol, 21, No, 4, June 1972 FOUNDED 1923 -CONTENTS- SOCIETY OFFICERS •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 178 Present Officers, their addresses and phone numbers KLA-HOW-YA / BOOK and MICROFILM CHAIRMEN ...... 179 Editor resigns / New appointees FRENCH-CANADIAN STUDY GROUP Mr0 Dave Axe, Chairman ...... 179 Also see March issue, page 121 NEW MEMBERS ©a®®*.®*.©®®®©®®®®®®®®®®.®.®®.®® IoU Welcome aboard BY-LAWS PROPOSAL / ADDITIONAL FUNDS .- BOOKS, MICROFILM ...... • 181 New section to Article VIII / To purchase books & microfilm VIRGINIA-TENNESSEE-KENTUCKY STUDY GROUP Miss Clarice Long, Chrn • • • • * 181 Exchange ideas on where and how to research these areas LAND RECORDS^ LIBRARY DESK Miss Darlene Hamilton .....-....••• 182 Please note the corrections from the March issue PENNSYLVANIA - STATE LIBRARY ...... 183 Records available and what service will be given NEW BOOKS Miss Helen Waterman,, Chairman ••••••••• • • • • • • • * 187 At Headquarters for your use when they arrive SURNAME STORY Mr, Edward Wagner, Esq0 0oL3Jo ...... •....•• 188 Two pages of goodies on Heraldry MARRIAGE OF RELATIVES Mr. Roy Colbert ...... 190 Cousin marries cousin, again and again READER'S CORNER ...... 192, 214 Several fine new books being offered NEBRASKA - GAR POST of 1897 • • • • • * • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • * • 193

KLA-HOW^YA Editor*s comments I am very sorry to advise you that due to business commitments, and for per sonal reasons, I can no longer continue as your editor0 Contrary to what some of you have indicated ~ I am not a retired person, I have been trying to run my bus iness activities full-time, as well as, the hours that I donate to the Society,, I have recently become active in commercial printing, in addition to my previous businesses. (In a few years watch for books by Homestead Press0) I leave my position, in the Society, with mixed feelings, especially at this time -- appreciative of the many wonderful friendships that 1 have made within the Society, and especially those known only through correspondence0 The experi ence and knowledge that I have gained from these past three years as editor shall always be treasured. Of course there are those that would be pleased to inform you that any gain that 1 have made would be a vast improvement - it is rumored that I must have "flunked sandbox*1., --Saddened, because I have not been able to do all of the things that I felt led to the vitality and vibrancy necessary to maintain a going growing organization that would be of benefit to the majority of the members; and, because I am unable to completely fulfill some of the ideas that may have caused some of you to join the Society through your contacts with me, or by one of the specials sent in cooperation with the membership chairmen0 I have had the pleasure of working with three Membership Committee Chairmen: Mrs0 George (Gladys) Tallman; Mrs0 William (Mayo) Greer; and, Mrs„ Jean (Dorothy) Fordyceo I believe that the new Editor, either Miss Emilyn Smith or her appointee, will continue the tradition of providing our readers with a useful and enjoyable bulletin,, My best wishes to them - and to you0 I wish to thank the many persons that have helped me during my term of office, the articles contributed by members and friends have been much appreciated0 A special thank-you to the crew that helped assemble the bulletin each quarter0 1 intend to remain a member of the Society, to be useful, as called upon, within my capabilities0 This is one of the reasons for the heading with a word of jargon from the Chinook language that has a double meaning - Goodbye, or, Hello. Miss Emilyn Smith has accepted the appointment of Publications Chairman, in that position she can either appoint an Editor, or assume the responsibility her self0 Miss Smith will need your help as the bulletin project has grown to a major activity* To visualize one issue think of 80 to 90 reams of paper, or about one hundred thousand pages requiring 27 hours of press time to print it0 The Society membership has grown from just over 350 about 4 years ago to just under 900 paid members now, not counting the many exchanges0 There is more wordage in this one issue of the quarterly than in an entire year just a short time ago0 The work load involves gathering or writing the material, rough draft typing, final typing, screening-, making the printing plates, printing, collating (a crew of 10-15 .an en tire day), addressing, sorting by zip, bundling and mailing -- it is now time to start the next issue!!! I forgot, someone else is going to do it now!!! Roy Colbert

BOOK and MICROFILM CHAIRMEN Mr0 Charles Sedlacek, Purchasing Committee Chairman, announced the appointment of Mrs0 Lawrence (Dorris) Gurney as Book Purchasing Com mittee Chairman, and Mr0 Roy Colbert as Microfilm Purchasing Committee Chairman0 He advises that you make your wishes known as to your preference on purchases,

FRENCH-CANADIAN STUDY GROUP ORGANIZES Mr, Dave Axe, Chairman, advises that meet ing room dates have been arranged, alternating with the Canadian Interest Groupe Call him at 822-1514, or address your correspondence: 13304 87th N0E., Kirkland, WA 98033, for further information0 This Group, by personal contributions with an assist by the Society, recently donated research material to the Genealogical Section of the Seattle Public Library to assist those interested0 180 (6-72) Bulletin of the Seattle Genealogical Societyt Inc. RE: Corrections which need to be made in the article, Land Records as Genea logical iSpw^^e-y'iwM Seattle Genealogical Society Bulletin0

A word was omitted in the sentence on page 126, of the above article, regarding the indices for land records in the National Records Center in Washington, DC, and is should read, - It is necessary to supply this much information because these records are not indexed prior to July 1± 1908.

Also on page 126 I made a generalized statement regarding the location of locf&l land records for the New England states . I implied that all of the land retdrds for these states are filed with the town clerks „ This is not the case and the following notes should help to clarify the matter.

The land records for Rhode Island, Vermont and Connecticut are filed with the town clerks. In the case of Connecticut the early land records were kept in the Proprietors1 Records and town meetings records, Some of these have been retain ed in the towns and others have been transferred to the State Library in Hart ford, Connect!cut«

The land records for Maine are> filed in the county offices; Land records for Massachusetts since 1643 in the Bay Colony and since 1685 in the Plymouth C6Tony, and for New Hampshire since 1771 are also filed in the county offices0 Earlier Massachusetts land records were part of the Proprietors' Records and town meet ings records* Earlier New Hampshire land records were transacted at the Provincial Capitol and are filed in the state archives room at the library of the New Hampshire Historical Society in Concord, Massachusetts..'•

It is also helpful to know something about the histories of these states before trying to locate the land records because of the various boundary changes.

The sources for the above information are as follows:

SUMMER RESEARCH

As the weather, and for some the opportunity to take field trips, encourages your genealogical research away from your home area do not forget to take a- long your camera as a research tool0 For copying information at a cemetery, in newspaper and library archives a camera will provide you with a fast method of recording the wanted information^ When visiting with distant relatives, both in lineal and mileage seperation, take your camera as an opportunity may be pre- sented whereby you can copy some old photos, newspaper clippings, etc. Bulletin of the Seattle Genealogical Society3 Inc.. The surname has figured high in the literary field with such notables as Francisco Matinez de la Rosa (1787-1862) and Gregorio Martinez de Sierra (1881-1947) who wrote the popular Cradle Song, -after all of this time I thought martinez was something I made with gin § vermouth!

MARRIAGE OF RELATED PERSONS by Roy Colbert ! In the "July..28, 1969 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA),- appears an article on the Genetics and Laws Prohibiting Marriage in the Uni ted States 9 by Michael G0 Farrow, MS, and Richard C0 Juberg, MD, PhD, in which the authors compare the Civil and Common Laws of the various States,' Al though most data and informational statistics do deal with recent rulings and compilations there are entries and mentions of early day concern and studies of consanguineous marriages*1

It iz no crime for brothers and sisters to intermarry $ except the fatal conse quences to society; for were it generally practised^ men would become a race of 1 r pigmiesQ It iz no crime for brothers and sisters children to intermarry^ -and this iz often practised; but such near blood connections often produce imperfect children. The common people hav hence drawn an argumerrt to proov such connections criminal: considering weakness3 sickness and deformity in the offspring, az judge z ments upon the parents& Superstition is often awake when reezon is asleep,* So wrote Noah Webster in 1790 in perhaps the first printed discussion on consanguine marriages in America0

If you often wonder about the legality of those first cousin marriages, that are so prevalent in the early records -it was not until the late 19th and the early 20th centuries that specific laws were enacted by the individual States prohibit ing consanguineous marriages within related or specified degreesQ Until that period the only controlling factors were the element of Spiritual.Guidance, and n as Webster states, "Superstitions Q Even today nearly half of the states have no prohibiting laws on 1st cousin marriages0 Only seven states have laws prohibit ing marriage between .1% cousins (3rd degree), and only ten states have- prohibit ing laws on the marriage of half 1st cousins. The laws are not corisistant as to degrees even within some states: For example, 1st cousins nor 2nd cousins cannot marry in Oklahoma yet a combination half niece half nephew, or, a half aunt half uncle^ and 1% cousins may marry. On the other hand some states have laws prohib iting affinous relatives from marrying; as Oklahoma will not permit the marriage 1 of a man and his wife's daughter by a previous marriage0 -

3 Christian rules possibly date back to the old Roman Laws0 If Scriptures were the basis then interpretation in some instances varied-, as Mosaic Law11' does not pro hibit marriage of 1st cousins o Confusius was stricter, suggesting no two per sons of the same surname marry0

The authors of the JAMA1 article in tabulating the various prohibitions to mar ry that are currently in effect in the United States found that the degrees of relationship varied depending upon which system of the law was being used for the calculation„ They state,1 Legally as well as genetically consanguinity may. be lineal or collaterale , Lineal consanguinity exists when one person is descend ed from the other^ as between son and father or grandfather and upward in a di rect ascending line $ or conversely between father and son or grandson and down ward in a direct descending line0 Collateral consanguinity exists when two per* sons have a direct descending line, Collateral consanguinity exists when two per sons have descended from the same common ancestor but not from each other*1

LINEAL CONSANGUINITY: The degree of lineal consanguinity between two persons is computed by counting the generations in the direct line between them, and the number of links forms the number of degrees of relationship0 This method is us ed by Canon, Civil and Common Law„ continued on the next page Bulletin of the Seattle Genealogical Society3 Inc (6-72) 191

MARRIAGE OF RELATED PERSONS, continues

COLLATERAL CONSANGUINITY: In order to compute the degree of collateral con sanguinity between two persons accord ing to Canon and Common law the com mon ancestor is first identified. Then the number of generations between the common ancestor and the two persons, or the more remote of the two, con stitutes the degree of relationship. By Civil Law the method is of comput ing the relationship between two col lateral relatives is to begin with either and enumerate the steps up to the common ancestor and then down to the other. The total number of steps is equivilent to the degree. (Example: An Uncle and his Niece are 5 steps a- part and thus are 3rd degree relatives - see figure illustration at right.

Now you wonder about the cousins that intermarried that were Related to two common ancestors(for each) - thus the coefficient of relatedness has in creased to a power of two (multiply by % or divide by 2). In some family histories you will find 1st cousins marrying and their offspring marrying 1st cousins, carrying along the in-' breeding for several generations8 It was not uncommon, especially so in a Calculates of degretes of consanguinity. INDEX OF PACIFIC NORTHWEST PORTRAITS, Edited by Marion B0 Appleton, Published for Pacific Northwest Library Association, Reference Division, University of Wash ington Press, Seattle & London, 1972. Price $7.50 (Washington State residents plus 38£ tax)

The idea of compiling an index of all available Northwest historical pictures was initially presented at the 1938 Pacific Northwest Library Association annual con ference . The project was established in 1949 with five state chairmen to work with the regional chairman on book selection. The completed portrait index lists the names of over twelve thousand men and women identified with the history of the Pacific Northwest: Alaska, British Columbia (Canada), Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. It ranges in time from the years of early exploration to the 1st quarter of the twentieth century. It includes portraits of Indians, explorers, pioneers and others who developed the region, and of Easterners who influenced the West* Some of the illustrations indexed are not formal portrait photographs; it seemed preferable to include a "candid" photo, or a reproduction of a drawing painting or sculpture rather than no likeness at all*

This Index was arranged from 324 titles, keys are arranged alphabetically, with each name (also in alphabetical order) so that determining the periodical or book is quite easy. Several additional lists are provided, to help the user: an alphabetical listing by author, and regional lists classified by state and provinceo

The 1970-71 Picture Indexing Committee was: Joy N„ Smith, Chairman, Marion B. Appleton, Lorraine Schluter and Chloe T. Sivertz,

A very nice family publication., It begins with the Loepp and Ortmann families at their origin in Germany, giving three generations of ancestry of Peter Loepp prior to 1700.„ The bulk of the genealogy is the -descendants of Peter Loepp^ II and Agathe Reimer, and of Ferdinand Ortmann and Renata Meseck\ Family tradi tions, explanations and other narrative has been given along with the genealogy to make this interesting reading to anyone* Pictures, maps and sketches have added their interest to the book.

The only suggestion would have been for an index„ "A genealogical table of the Loepp Family, with page listings^, does' not cover all of those mentioned, •

GERMAN RESEARCH INFORMATION

Mr0 Richard Goldmann% S*GeS« member in Germany has sent the complete set of 28 issues of Volume II of the Familienkundlichen Nachrichtens along with the cover and full index> in addition to the current issues of Volume III^ for the col~ lection of the Seattle Genealogical Society*s records*

This publication, is a listing of families$ and individuals working on certaii) familiesp as well as query listings - somewhat similar to the Genealogical Help er* s annual and semi-annual surname exchange issues, Mr. Goldman states$ "This will give you a good dictionary on families? on which research is being done at the moment in Germany.. This does not mean that families which are not mentioned are not looked for at the .moment. The F-N is a query magazine, so there are many families on whom nobody puts in a query, because he has no problems with that f"amily« But if you find a family ill the index, which interests you, you can easily find, on the given page, the man or woman who does research on that family. Of course, if you do not find your family names, you have to put in a query your™ self\".

The F-N is published by Verlag Degener.§ Co., INH^ Gerhard Gessner^ D8530,' Neustadt (Aisch) 9 Pe 0, Box 1340, West Germany> with a circulation of 11,000.. (but also added as a supplement to most other genealogical periodicals in Ger many). A standard query listing would cost around $2*00 (U.S.)* increasing slightly due to your wordage. An excellent research aid.

Mr0 Goldmann is the new secretary of his local., genealogical Society/ the * Roland zu Dortmund^ he also, publishes his own family periodical the Goldnann^News#

Genealogical data depends Almost entirely upon hand written records. You may have obtained some of your information from other printed sources or from books, however, nearly all of the statistics that you now have are based upon hand written original sources. The correctness of much of your material depends up on accurate translation by someone. If you have not progressed beyond the stage of microfilmed records then you have not, as yet, been fully exposed to the vast display of mannerisms of letter design put forth by the scribes in recording the information. There were so many influences on early penmanship in America that probably no other country has ever experienced. Each nationality contributed to the total design which has evolved in the past two centuries. At the time of the revolution the country was under the English influence in language and poli tics , but here and there small sections, or pockets, of other nationals added their mannerisms of letter design0 This makes it important to not only study a document prior to translation but also to recognize the area, or the influ ences of the documents origin. Census records are more easily deciphered as the format of each enumeration for a given census year was standard* If you follow back over the scribe!s style until you locate recognized words or letters you can then apply those to the word you are puzzling over. Probably the one most confused interpretation by a beginning researcher is the double "s" which appears more as the letter "p". Do you have a "Jipe or Jepe11 named individual?- it should be Jesse, or, how a- bout Capandra? it should be Cassandra, This is the German influence from the /3 style of writing the double "s". So when you see that letter "p" it may be a double "s", as: i? ^^ ^# It would take a very large book to give you all of the mannerisms of letter de sign but here is a list to watch for* A, This letter has changed little in centuries. Our present day design is quite precise but you might also find: c^ ^f jj\, ^n B. Another old classic, but watch for: L;£, Aj ; small letter as: C. The early records can easily be confused for an "0" as the letter design may close the letter entirely as: ^> <£^(S> f^k ^R • /& The small case letters can be as an "o\ or,^:*^~af' ^%. ^y£ Now try this word: ^v^/ViVS-) (desesed for deceased)

F0 You will find variations of both the open left and the open right faced stance, somewhat as written today and it is usually fairly familar. Do watch for the "F" that can be confused for an "H" which probably orgin- ated from the double "f" French words, as: Jf ~f( ff jf^r G, It gets tough as this: S 0> & or the small letter as: Ino,

HANDWRITING, continues

H. Can this really be an "H"? The larger case is difficult but the lower case h has a way of sort of drifting into nothing or part of another letter, as:

I. andj Ji . AOfte**~-="written written ththee samesame,, alsalsoo useusedd foforr ononee anotheanotherr 4ivn the spelling of a word: Ka Ah, I know thatonet ! ••/.<£-& |4.4^ ' U Maybe translated as an "S" (possibly Lemuel originated in this manner). In the small letters watch for the double "T" that may appear as the double »f" or as the «V letter, as: ^ .£ £ J- 0^ ^ f>

M, and N. Usually some variation of the printed Tetters: '[*$)( \^J^ $C

0. Has added extras on caps, maybe open topped on the small: (^(D0^ "V"

P. watch f0r: • jtipTP-P'-t y:-f>(p y •

Q. The small letter as a "y" is the most difficult: §J S^<2§ W M 4

R. How about: ~^%, \ 9^ ^ ^ . f V ?T JL * a PJ S. Would you believe: ^ ® & )&® * ^ *S>JfS' .

T. Many styles, here is a few: (^ C" §^ § f / th: ;^

U.« and V. Usually the same in early words and engravings, watch for the long up ward stroke that ends with a small curl at the top as it appears the same as the V:. IP & # ^ ft^ ^jy* ^

W. It could be an "M": CflP fife A^\%

X. Watch for a closed letter: lOj^ ^ -^t. Yo Also closed: l7v ) '\; \j <

Z. The "h" style is the most confusing: U x*

ditto - same as; ^ X) ^ ^ ^° «^CH

&. and - between parties: CM J^ A§5 CJ €<^0m*^^-

lessee: fm^M- Lessor: ^-^^

birth: cf?j#^ born: &J\

As mentioned, the national origin of the settlers influenced the1 styles of hand used, Pennsylvania documents may vary considerable from those of Virginia or of the New England.'area,, The German stress not only influenced the letter design bat also the arrangement of letters in a word, und or unde could be written as, 1A1 with the bar taking up the "da" sound; Remember also that the instrument was a hardwood stick or a quill and was more adaptable to the single letter form similar to printing. PRESIDENT' S PAGE by Harlan Yi.Smith (Last June Mr. Smith, as incoming President was given the front cover, and Miss Waterman, as the outgoing President was given the back cover, for their comments. As Mr. Smith has resigned his position of President his replacement will be giv en the inside front cover. Thank you Harlan for this past year. Ed.) It seems to me that you and I who cute Interested In genealogy, have a great many things to be thanklul lor. First that we have had our thoughts and Inter ests directed towards those who have contributed to the making ol this country what It Is today, and secondly, more specifically to gain llrst hand knowledge ol what specific people have contributed to provide you and me with the good tile that we enjoy today. Do you realize that we Live In a country, and at a time, that: would be the envy ol any person In the world or In history? Centalnly we become discouraged a bit as we look down out times, but -'get the big picture1, look up, and see the things you have, the freedom that you enjoy. Such things should be dearly seen by every genealogist. 11 we get the "big picture" there will be no time lor any petty squabbling. You know, In my many lines ol lamlly history that I have been able to trace, I have never lound among them the lamous . They have all been people working lor what they receive, ^pressing on Jor better things. Some ol them poor and unlor- tunate9 some success lul In their ellorts, some with untimely deaths and result ing hardships In the lamlly. In one line every other generation engaged in mil itary service back to the UOQ's* It Is such people as these In your line and In mine that have made America great. How many ol these people when discouraged and knowing not where to turn, have lallen on their knees and have asked lor Divine Help, What a great heri tage we all have!!! It is such things as these that I would encourage us all to keep In mind as we seek our ancestral past. As we put the warp and wool together In building a tapestry ol our lamlly tree. Let us clearly see the pattern ol lile that our ancestors have bequeathed to us, as we enjoy it In our'lLvZng today, May your search and research be successful; share It with others * Von will always lind that as you give, to others, you will also receive Irom them, and what Is more enjoyable than rejoicing together, I wish to oiler a special word ol thanks to all, ol those that worked in my behall during the past year towards the, goal ol a success lul, yet benellcent, and contributing, socleXy& My best regards to you all, Harlan yeager Smith
